Franzen Placed on IR

ZETTERBERG STRAINED HIS BACK? AGAIN? That's a problem he had in the past! His back has become mush! This is definately career ending, probably. Put him on LTIR for good and let his career end. I can't bare to see my hometown boy carry on like this. Think of his family.

*Rolls eyes*

Franzen was symptom free for three days. He didn't expierence another concussion, his symptoms just returned. Suggesting his career is probably over is a wild assumption.

Remember when Crosby missed something like 150 games over 3 seasons due to multiple concusions? I wonder where he's at in the scoring race in 2013-14? There's always going to be the occasional Savard/Pronger, but frankly most players with concussion history return and play on.

For all we know his symptoms will dissapear again tomorrow, and he'll be back again before we know it.

Take it easy for a bit Mule

He was only symptom free for 3f****** days, what dumbass decided that it was a good idea to let him play. Hasn't the medical staff learned by now that you don't f*** around with concussions. I'm baffled by the incompetence.

Calling the Red Wings medical/training staff 'incompetent' is a bit harsh.

Concussions, and their symptoms aren't exactly fully understood (I know - broken record)...Franzen may have felt fine for a period of time, and then any little bump, or jostle in his last game could cause the symptoms to return.

I've been 1 of many here to rag on Franzen, and his work ethic, but he is in fact a pro athlete in a highly competitive league...As much as it pisses me off that he'll now most likely miss the remainder of the season - he at least tried.

I'm not certain of his future, but I do hope he gets healthy.

Jesus, a lot of you are making it seem like he's been out for a year or two. He's not Crosby there fellas, he's missed a good chunk of time, but that happens with concussions. Let's not jump to conclusions. I mean, if I had a nickel for every person that said Helm or Bertuzzi was done after last year I'd be typing this post from somewhere that serves drinks with little umbrellas out of Brazilian girls' belly buttons...so basically anywhere in Brazil.

I've heard interesting things about those beaches down there, and now - it's summer!

I mean, by the sounds of it Franzen will be able to tag along since he's never going to play hockey again...unless...unless, he's a vegetable that is.

Anyway, everyone needs a wing man. Just don't cramp my style.

I was watching the game on Sunday when Franzen took a minor tumble in the corner. I laughed and said uh, oh, Franzen's out for another six weeks. My kid said, I wish I thought you were joking, but I could totally see that happening.

Not calling the Wings staff incompetent just the the way they handled the Franzen situation. And after reading Hollands comments about Franzen today, its really hard not to call what the training staff did as medical malpractice.

He’s been in constant communication with (the specialist),” Holland said. “He’s got to have a lot of days of being healthy before he plays.”

I don't get it, now Franzen needs to have lot's of healthy days before returning and what before it wasn't important? Ridiculous.

LTIR for the rest of the season...Get healthy Franzen, come back in 2014. Do the team a favor, let go of that roster spot and cap hit. You need to get 100000% healthy so you can go back to being the Franzen that was chosen over Hossa... here's you money, take the rest of the season off, we don't want you having to wear helmet off the ice as well!

Imagine having a headache for 3 weeks then you wake up day 22 and its gone and you feel great.

Unfortunately the 'great' feeling is in comparison to the last s***ty 3 weeks of headaches... Doesnt mean Mule was good to go, just feeling relief and much better.

But, when all the tests look good and the patient is happy, feeling 'great' and looking like their normal self it must be very hard for a dr to see any reason to hold you from going back to work or the ice.

This head trama stuff is very tricky and the athletes need to be just as accountable as the med staff.

Im guessing the majority of former or current athletes on this forum lied to a coach/dr/Trainer to get back in the game.

This forum has a really thin grasp of concussions it seems. He can't will himself better. Concussions hit you no matter how tough you are, and your recovery has nothing to do with your willpower or your strength.

This guy turned out fine despite many concussions.

It's not that much different than a knee or any other serious injury. A guy comes back, thinks he can go, you give him some practice time, and if he holds up in practice and still feels ok, he goes back in. Now that it's come back, they're going to be more cautious with it

A knee and a concussion are completely different injuries. You have to be extra cautious with concussions, and I'd like to reiterate what I said earlier that players lie. Its up to the coaching staff to be cautious and 3 days is not being cautious in my opinion.

As someone who has had concussions, I think 3 days symptom free is enough.

So...When is a good return date for anyone in pro sports who's suffered a concussion?

2 months?

4 months?

2 years?

And as for players who lie.....Should the coaching staff treat them like perps on NYPD Blue?

Not trying to be a smart ass, but I'd like to think that the trainers, and MD's whom are part of the Red Wings medical staff know a few things more than you, or I in regards to concussions.

Had a few concussions myself when I was a wee lad...Maybe there's a reason why I was in 'Special Ed' for several years.

The one thing I'll say is every player is different. But in Franzen's case he has had concussion problems in the past, plus the hit that gave him his last concussion wasn't a hard one which makes it reasonable to assume he may not have been fully healthy. I'll concede that the training staff knows more about concussions then me if you concede that they made a mistake clearing Franzen to play.

Players shouldn't be interrogated, but the team held Datsyuk out longer with his concussion but Franzen was allowed to play after three days? He missed 16 games but after just three days they let him back in? Yeah every case is different but when dealing with a player with concussion problems the team should air on the side of caution.

Doesn't really work that way with concussions. Or, at least, it shouldn't.
