USA women's beat Switzerland 9-0. The skill gap in women's hockey is ridiculous ha

The gap is actually closing a bit.  Canada only won 5-0 on the weekend (although they did lead in shots 69-14) and US only beat Finland 3-1....who Canada is currently tied with in the 2nd.

Back in the early days (20s), Canada and US were dominant in the Men's division as well.  US beat Switzerland 29-0 in the first round, then lost to Canada in the semis and Canada then beat Sweden 12-1 in the gold medal game (they had beat Czechoslovakia 15-0 in the first round).  Apparently, it wasn't uncommon to have 30-0 scores back then.

Edit...just checked 1924 Olympics....after the first 3 games, Canada had outscored the competition 85-0.

USA's entire forward corps looks awesome. Not many pushovers in there. Gonna be some high skilled blue collar hockey outta that group.

@bcostellothn: Is the caliber of women's hockey improving lately or have I been watching too many Sabres' games this year?

Oh snap

So, what's the schedule looking like? Haven't watched a second of the Olympics yet. Fill me in?

...is better than everyone's, except Canada?

Sweden play a game every 7 hours, that's about all I remember from the schedule.

"If I can be totally honest, it's not a lot of guys you get impressed by. Actually, it's no one else but him. From the bench, to see what move he makes -- you're like, 'I wish I could do that.' Sometimes you sit on the bench and just think, 'wow,' and you look over to the other bench and they sit there and shake their heads, too. He has great, great skills. I'm probably not going to play with another player who has the kind of skills he has." Mikael Samuelsson on Pavel Datsyuk

And they're still gonna win all three medals: Gold, Best Beard, and Hardest Kronwalling.

From TSN

The Russians are practicing for the first time since NHL players arrived for the Olympics, and captain Pavel Dstsyuk is the only skater not on the ice.

"I don't think it's a serious problem, dangerous. I think he's going to be okay," said Russian coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov.

I watched portions of both womens games today and was really impressed.  The quality level has really gone up since last time I saw it, the goaltending especially which I remember as being particularly bad.

My wife commented that it was like watching the Sheffield Steelers (British team) and I have to agree with her, kinda ECHL level..

I wouldn't say they're at that level just yet. US women's team went 2-2 against some East coast boys high school teams in January.

Y'know, if you close one eye and squint real hard with the other, these uniforms aren't bad.

I guess that's what happens when they invite Martin and Orpik, over Byfuglien and Yandle. Still don't understand the logic (or lack thereof). It's even more ridiculous than not letting Bobby Ryan on the team.

Because we've got plenty of defensive scoring without Yandle or Byfuglien and we needed players who could actually play adequate defensive defense now and again.  Byfulgien is TERRIBLE defensively and putting him out there against Canada or Sweden would be tantamount to handling them the Gold Medal.  Yandle is better than Buf, but still why pick him when Suter, Fowler, Shattenkirk, and McDonagh are all scoring as much as he is this year AND play defense better too?

Perhaps you're forgetting about a secret little weapon known as Jan Mursak.  BOOM!  How's it feel to have a bomb dropped on your a**?!!

I don't care how un-Canadian it makes me sound, but Kunitz riding coattails on the 1st line and Duchene as the 14th forward make me want Canada to finish dead last in the tournament.  Sorry guys……coach of the century strikes again.
