Richdg 267 Report post Posted May 14, 2014 One of the things that comes up on a regular basis is: "player X has to high of a cap number", when we are all playing cyber GM. So a question for you. Let's pretend it is the summer of 2017. Mantha has in fact turned into what we all hope he will become. He has just finished his 3rd full year with the RW's. he is a sturdy 6-5/230 and has scored 40+ goals in each of the past 3 seasons, hitting 50 goals 1 time. Mantha and his agent are now working with the RW's on a new contract. He wants a 8 year 96 million $ deal. The current Cap is 82 million. Do you resign him? State your reasons either way. My opinion: Hell yes I resign him! Players like that are not available on every street corner. We are talking about a guy that has proven he can produce at the highest level. At this point in time we are talking about a guy that is 23/24 years old and will be 31/32 when the contract is completed. The cap will continue to grow and his share of it will continue to get smaller. As other star players develop they will end up with even higher cap hits over the lifetime of the contract. rrasco 1,312 Report post Posted May 14, 2014 Unless the new CBA changed it, I was pretty sure $10M was the limit for a contract. Meaning this $12m/year contract isn't possible. Not to mention he would be the highest paid NHL athlete in history.
DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted May 14, 2014 First, I highly doubt he starts his NHL career with 3 seasons of 40+ goals. Second, he'd still be an RFA and have less leverage. Third, I don't believe any one player is worth that much, it makes it too hard to build a team with quality depth. 3 krsmith17, Dabura and wingedominance13 reacted to this

MabusIncarnate 5,344 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 Oh the joys of the offseason at LGW. No way do I ever see locking up any player at that cap hit a good idea unless he is the literal second coming of Wayne Gretzky and provides the offense of 3 top line players combined scoring over 200 points per season. Who knows what happens when players figure out how to defend against him better, and if he is selfish enough to command maximum contract he is likely the same class of player who will drop off in production after getting that contract. Look at the quality of player we get out of Datsyuk for the price, pay nearly double? No thanks. 2 number9 and Dabura reacted to this
Dabura 12,207 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 Mantha is awesome, but I hope we're going to be reasonable with our expectations. Dominating in junior is one thing. Dominating in the NHL, that's quite another.

MasterPavel 115 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 I love you Richdg, and as much as I love Mantha he is not going to be that successful to start his pro career. 20-30-40 would be a hell of a start, and garner a contract for roughly 7yr & 45mil.

If that was his start it would be more realistic that we would sign him to a 3 year 15-18 million dollar deal, meaning he would still be a 26 year old rfa and we could lock him up after we see what he brings for 3 more years. Richdg 267 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 (edited) So if we develop a guy that produces like Perry, Getzlef, ovie, Weber etc...... you don't want to pay them? yes I do understand that premium players making premium money can cause issues with the cap. But I would not be one to trade away to level performers for prospects, unless we are a sub .500 team that needs to completely rebuild. That is what we are talking about. How pissed would everyone be if this off season Holland trades away Datsyuk for 4 1st round picks? Edited May 15, 2014 by Richdg

An aging player close to end of career in a team that isn't going to be winning a cup while he is on it? Yes...but no other team would make that trade. That's an overpayment. Now we can hear the less intelligent whine about how it's a bad deal LOL.
Buppy 1,720 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 Wow. In a few weeks Mantha has gone from, "maybe he'll have a chance to make the team next year", to the next Ovechkin. At this rate he'll be in the Hall of Fame by June. 3 frankgrimes, wingsfan4795 and number9 reacted to this

I personally think one year in GR is best for him specially since we have a lot of forwards all ready. And with GR as good as it is he will get some playoff experience at the AHL level. DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 DD, to be clear, you would trade or let him walk? I'd do what virtually every team does to a hold out RFA. Let him sit until he realizes the contract I offered is better than making no money at all.
Richdg 267 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 This isn't about mantha and what I think he will/will not be. This is/was about if we as a team have one of the top young players in the league and he wants to get paid, do you pay him or move him. That simple. Could be a forward, Dman or G, doesn't really matter.
