Z Winged Dangler 2,082 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 Didn't see a topic on this yet, so here we go. (And I'm not counting the Mantha to GR thread, this one deserves it's own) 2014 Memorial Cup starts tonight and Anthony Mantha is playing after a very short break from QMJHL finals. http://www.mastercardmemorialcup.ca/article/2014-mastercard-memorial-cup-schedule-and-game-times There's the link to the Memorial Cup site with all games and timings. Wings have Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi there. I don't believe any other players are Wings prospects, but the tournament should be awesome and Mantha should be showcased heavily after scoring 81 goals in 81 games between regular season and playoffs this year. I honestly hope he never plays for GR. 1 DatsyukianDekes reacted to this

paulwoodsfan 52 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 Mantha also scored five goals in six games at world juniors, so he has 86 goals in 87 games so far. Hopefully he puts up at least one more goal than games played in the tournament. Ninety-two total goals for the year would be a nice, Gretzky-esque stat. 2 Nev and Z Winged Dangler reacted to this

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 I hope the Griffins are still playing when Mantha is done. I want him to be the real deal and not play in the minors next year, but it'd be nice to see him tear up the AHL for a week or two just to reassure us. 1 Z Winged Dangler reacted to this

I don't watch junior hockey. just check each teams websites once and a while. They still haven't unpdated any stats and had him listed as out since Dec 8 or something that. GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 I'm not Canadian, so I still don't understand how you can have a team make it to the Final Four just by hosting the tournament? Obviously, it's tough to set up a playoff with just the three winners from each league. However, to give a 4th team some kind of cheap entry into the Final Four defeats the entire purpose of a tournament.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 Guelph are the best team in the CHL, but it's not usually the best team that wins. Hopefully Mantha dominates on the big stage, wouldn't mind seeing Val D'or win as I've always been partial to the Q.
paulwoodsfan 52 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 To make this tournament work financially, tickets have to be sold far in advance. Only way you can guarantee that is to give the home team automatic entry. Fortunately, host clubs have historically loaded up and been strong contenders -- and in some cases earned their way in by winning the league championship. London lost out a month ago, but to Guelph. London was arguably the second-best team in the O all season so they're not likely to fall flat on their faces even though they "backed in." 1 Z Winged Dangler reacted to this
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 I'm not Canadian, so I still don't understand how you can have a team make it to the Final Four just by hosting the tournament? From Wikipedia: The 1983 Memorial Cup tournament saw the inclusion of a fourth team, the team hosting the event, which was done to boost tournament attendance. As with the 2005 Memorial Cup,also held in London, selling tickets to this edition was not a problem.
paulwoodsfan 52 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 Of course it's not a problem when the home team is guaranteed to be in it -- that's the point. It would have been a problem if London didn't have a spot guaranteed, IMO, and it would be a huge problem in some other junior markets. London earned their way in in 2005, so the team they beat for the O title (Ottawa) got into the tourney despite losing in the playoffs.

Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 16, 2014 Y'know, we've been talking up Mantha as a steal, and for good reason. But I think you could argue that Tyler Bertuzzi has been a pretty pleasant surprise in his own right. I know we were kinda miffed that we picked him as early as we did, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe he wasn't as under-the-radar as we'd assumed. This will sound terrible, but I wonder if his injury troubles might help him in the long run. My impression is they've sort of forced him to dial back the Brad Marchand stuff and just focus on being a productive hockey player, which is good because he's actually quite skilled. From the reports I've read from Storm fans the injuries have done nothing to change Bertuzzi's pest like ways. He was public enemy #1 for the Battalion fans who were dumping beer on him as he went to the dressing room.

He's one of the prospects I haven't had the pleasure of seeing play in a game setting, and it felt like most of what I was hearing and reading about him this season centered on his production and non-pest stuff. And if they win their league title the runner up comes with them to the MC.
FlashyG 1,799 Report post Posted May 17, 2014 Val d'Or has some really bad dmen, wow. They actually have a pretty strong defence group, at least depth wise. This game hasn't really shown their strengths but they block shots very well and are very good at moving the puck up to Mantha when he's on the ice.
