Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted October 23, 2014 I bet he's looking for a situation similar to what Roy has in Colorado. Head coach with the additional position of VP or something else with more autonomy.

While I agree, bowman was a bit different. He retired. If he wanted to he could have still been our coach today.

Head coach with the additional position of VP or something else with more autonomy. I thought Sakic is the VP there and Roy is acting as a player / GM type of guy ? But yeah I agree and I think Babcock has done everything to earn that title and/or trust.

ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted October 23, 2014 I think it would be the highest paid coaching contract in the league if I'm not mistaken. He's was already pretty close to the top (and was when he signed) at $2m Officially, Quennville is the highest paid coach in the league at $2.9m a year. Roy's overall compensation is probably more than that given his additional VP role.

Nightfall 871 Report post Posted October 27, 2014 Personnel changes rarely happens in this order but I think Holland is the one running out of ideas, not Babcock. Plus there isn't really a coach I'd pick over him. I do agree with you on this point. I really don't see the need to make a change unless we have someone better. Is Blashill better? Keep in mind before he went to the minors and coached the Griffins to a Calder Cup, he was viewed as a weak assistant coach with the Wings. People even saw it as a demotion to coach the Griffins after he spent one year with the Wings. I am not saying he is doomed to failure in the NHL. Just that he is untested in the NHL coaching ranks. I think it was actually the organization's plan to have Blashill spend a with year Babcock and learn all the systems and then take that to GR so that the transition for call ups would be easier. I don't think it was a demotion at all - I get the feeling it was planned all along. I admit there's some personal speculation, but so is yours - I never heard anywhere that Blashill was considered a weak assisstant. 1 kliq reacted to this

The Secret 304 Report post Posted October 27, 2014 (edited) I posted it a few pages back, but here it is again. http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/610384 Wow... this made me really really mad. I've tried to defend Holland as much as I possibly can but if I could i would kick him straight in the twig n' berries then make him like a piece of white dog poo. Why is he toying with this? 5 years at 5 million should be the easiest money he has ever spent and the best idea he has ever had.... if he screws up this and Babcock leaves for a measly few million dollars...has a Hossa'ish tinge to it. Jeez, He paid Samuelsson 3 million didn't he? To sit on the bench and rub his sore titty? WAKE UP HOLLAND!!! GUHDAMMET!!!! DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted October 27, 2014 Is Babcock negotiating with Holland, Devellano, or ownership? Also there's a possibility that they just flat out don't want him for 5 years.

So despite how difficult babs may be in this situation it's all Holland's fault? To be honest I don't think babs is quite as effective anymore. He is unwilling to try certain things (playing Weiss, putting Smith on the pp) and very stubborn on others (Cleary, nestrasil) and half the time his line combos are iffy at best (quincey-Smith, Abby and helm in the top 6) babs is a great coach but it's quite obvious things aren't going in the right direction somewhere between babs and Holland. I'd be quite fine with bringing nill up, and let babs go.

I'd be quite fine with bringing nill up, and let babs go. 2 Stanley Cups, 2 Olympic Golds, Never missed the playoff in Detroit, Somehow milked the team into the playoffs the last 2 seasons with an inconsistant and injury depleted roster and missing the best defenseman ever to play the game... No Babcock no playoff streak anymore!! Shall I go on? There are people and players you bargain hard with... and others you simply do not. Babcock in my opinion is one you do not. He it battle tested, tried and true... he has done nothing but lead and win EVERYWHERE he has coached... this resume doesn't grow on tree's. Not making Babcock happy and running with a green horn over a few million dollars is a massive failure IMO. Question Babs do and don'ts but see that there is always improvement and realize there is no one in the world with his pedigree!! Think about the number of Assistant Coaches under Babcock that have gone on to be quite successfull themselves and understand that is from apprenticing with the master! Maybe, MAYBE it's all smoke an mirrors right now and Holland really is about to unveil a master plan that would allow a team like Toronto (or who ever is desparate for a coach) to have exclusive rights to negotiate with Blashill (Knowing Babs will be signed and Holland can not be that stupid to let him get away) IN EXCHANGE for some deal for a player that we NEED (Top 4 D? Legit Power Forward? who knows) and would not be able to get otherwise. The growth in Detroit is visibly obvious over the last 2 seasons, some health and a piece or 2 and we did an on the fly reinvention and not a complete bust and suck and suck and suck and get better and get better and get better (maybe see Edmonton) Ya... so I think Holland is dumb right now and Babcock NEEDS to stay here... no I am not getting paid by Babs either but if he is in the market to adopt a 40 year old son that think he is god then < here I am! Waitng to be adopted!
