jimmyemeryhunter 2,747 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 I have a feeling Holland will sign him for one more year, the dudes a monster on the pk and one of the guys that leads the bottom6. The only way i see him being done in Detroit would be if one of Larkin or Jurco become solid penalty killers.
amato 3,210 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 I know I'm a little late but.. Damn Get well, Miller. Hope he makes a full recovery. He's always seemed like a good guy.
LeftWinger 4,963 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 A bit late to the convo, but does this spell the end of The Drew in Detroit? I could see Kenny offering him a one year deal, but letting him know that he will spend most of it in GR. This could be a career ending thing for him, not because of the injury itself, I am sure he'll recover enough to play, but because I don't know how much other teams would be interested in him or if Holland is just ready to move forward with the kids. Either way Get Well Soon Drew! are we 100% sure that Bill does NOT have a voodoo doll of Drew hanging from his mirror? Seems pretty coincidental that right around the same time he starts up with Miller, he gets the concussion, then when he comes back, this happens....Hmmmmmmmm

This is the best time to evaluate if the PK can thrive without him. If it can't then Holland probably will re-sign him (probably 1 year) till Larkin can do what Miller does. Doubt he'd want another hole in the season (PK) going into next season. League is too competitive now. Edited January 20, 2016 by kickazz
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 I'm not really pro or anti re-signing Miller, but if it came down to signing one of either Miller or Helm, I pick Helm every time, even taking into account the difference in salaries. I was really hoping that we would groom Ferraro into a Miller type player, but that's obviously not the case. If we decide to have a 4th line of Miller - Glendening - Helm next season I would be okay with that. As long as Andersson is nowhere near the lineup, Helm is primarily used as a 4th line penalty killer and Jurco is a mainstay in the top 9... Either way, I hope our PK is able to get back on track while Miller is out and hopefully he has a speedy recovery and can get in some games before the playoffs... paulwoodsfan 52 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 IMO Larkin longterm is going to be too valuable to kill penalties. He will need to be on prime power play and I don't want him regularly burning minutes playing a role that requires shot blocking. He is clearly capable of it but he's capable of other stuff that is way harder to find.

Edit: Posted too quickly / Spelling I want Callahan and Athanasiou on the club next year. Probably rotating in on the fourth. No Miller. No Helm. No Andersson. If we're resigning any of them it's Miller, but honestly I think the injuries are starting to pile up. Helm is trade bait for the deadline. krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted January 20, 2016 If we're not planning on re-signing Helm, I agree, he should be trade bait, however, I'd prefer to keep him as a 4th line, penalty kill specialist. I'd like to see what Callahan can do as well, but if you want to look at injuries piling up, look no further than Cally... Guy has spent more time on IR than in the lineup the past couple seasons. Granted, he's had the same freak occurrence (puck to face - broken jaw) twice, but nonetheless, he hasn't played a ton in the last two years... I also agree with using Larkin on the PK. Next season go with Glendening - Larkin and Sheahan - Helm (Athanasiou). Two very strong units. It's not like Larkin's been lighting it up on the PP either. He scores a ton 5 on 5, and I think he would be a major threat short handed as well.
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 (edited) I know this isn't related to Miller's injury, but since it was brought up earlier, I'm watching the Griffins game now and Callahan has returned. Hopefully he can stay healthy for the remainder of the season and maybe make his way on the Wings next season as a checker / penalty killer... e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 I wouldn't mind keeping Helm, but I really don't want to pay what I think we're going to have to pay to keep Helm. I do like his versatility, but I don't think he's worth much more than what he's currently being paid and no offense to the guy, but he's a third and fourth line guy. Not top 6. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 I agree, but if we can get Helm re-signed for $2.5M ($2.8M max), I would do that rather than re-sign Miller to $1.5M. With the understanding that he will be primarily used as a 4th line, penalty kill specialist. And no, he definitely shouldn't be anywhere near the top 6... 1 e_prime reacted to this
e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 (edited) I'd be okay with that. Either way -- with Miller and/or Helm -- you're looking at some man games lost due to injury. ...so jettison Andersson and give CALLAHAN a shot. Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted January 21, 2016 I like how Nosek played whilst he was up here, bigger body than Miller. I think we still lack some grit on the 4th line not sure if Callahan has the skill set for a full time role next year, but I do think Bertuzzi has. If we let Andersson Miller Helm and Richards go for next season I'd have no worries filling the void with Athanasiou Nosek Bertuzzi and Mantha. New 4th line of Glendening Nosek Bertuzzi. jimmyemeryhunter 2,747 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 If we can sign helm sub 3m, then absolutely re-sign him... Maybe the free agent market will play out like it did last offseason, where gms were really frugal and we'll get helm on the cheap. I hope this happens, I like helm, but If it's between him at $4m/4+years or miller at $1.5 for one year you call up Athanasiou and let helm walk... 3 e_prime, krsmith17 and TheXym reacted to this
kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted January 23, 2016 (edited) ^ yeah I think thats my opinion. If Miller is that much cheaper and Helm is asking for that 4 mill, Id rather get AA up in here. Edited January 23, 2016 by kickazz
