Drafting is hard too. With the idea of Zadina going the other way (which is fine) I'm still pissed at Holland that he left both Hughes and Bouchard looking right at us and drafted Zadina. Holland just destroyed this team with his stupid drafting at the end.

Ok, breathe, Yzerman will make this right.

Yah, missing out on Hughes set us back 5 years.  He's w HOF player.  But look at Zadina as an asset to get Debrincat and it's easier to stomach.  Why Zadina is wanted by Ottawa is whole nother story.  But Zadina (solid bottom 6 LW) + pick 17 (solid 2nd/3rd Line RW in 4 years) + pick 43 (50 career games in the NHL) for Debrincat (solid 2nd line RW) looks like a good move.  Debrincat's possession metrics are off the chart.  I hate minus players as you all know, but Debrincat looks to be a guy who would turn minuses around quickly with a good 2 way centerman.  Larkin is just that.

Sounds like SY is gonna drag this Dcat trade into the summer

Unless were really geting him for 2nd rounders and roster players

We got nothing but time and if Dorion can't get it done during the draft. Then what happens? He takes Decat to arbitration and prays for a deal next March?

Yzerman seems to be a nasty negotiator which I am taking delight in

Maybe the Boston pick is in play? If so, maybe the #17 can be used for a three way trade with Philly and St. Louis...

Dorion also said that the team is looking to trade Alex DeBrincat as the NHL Draft approaches. He noted that DeBrincat has not requested a trade, but the restricted free agent has refused to sign long-term with the club.

DeBrincat, 25, had 27 goals and 66 points in 82 games this past season. He was acquired by the Senators in July of 2022 during the NHL Draft from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for three draft picks.

The Senators general manager said there's been a large amount of trade talks, but does not expect to be able to land a first-round pick before Wednesday night.

Dorion said he may be able to land a second- or third-round pick before those rounds take place on Thursday. Ottawa is currently without a selection until the fourth round, with another selection to follow in the fifth round and three picks assigned to them in the seventh round.

Well then I would say his "scouting evaluations" are really, really bad.

This is the year you want multiple first round picks. For a rebuilding team to have 0 picks in the first 100 is just bad GM'ing.

If he wants a 1st next year, so be it. Trade him Zadina, #42 this year and OUR top 15 protected 1st in 24. If we fail to make the playoffs, then they get Boston's 1st. If both us and Boston make the playoffs, they get whichever one is the higher pick. If both picks are top 15, then they get our unprotected 1st in 2025.

Then use today's #17 to try and acquire Konecny. I'd also love to see if we could get Krug somehow.

So apparently, Ottawa is not allowing any teams to discuss a contract before he is traded. This is most likely the sticking point preventing a deal. Nobody wants to make the same mistake as Dorion and give up valuable assets for a guy they may not be able to re-sign.
