#2521817 Mantha named CHL player of the year

Posted by DatsyukianDekes on 26 May 2014 - 08:47 PM

I think a lot of fans see comparisons to a Hall of Fame caliber player, or they read what a prospect could develop into, they don't take into account that most players don't reach their full potential.  Some are complete busts and never see the NHL.  Others have decent careers, but never reach what their top end potential was projected to be-guys like Bonk, Anders Ericsson, Smid, and Upshall.  It's more likely that Mantha puts up Fraznen type numbers than he turn into some perennial All-Star power forward.

People want to silently shop Mantha now? wow, thank god your not the GM.

We need scoring, Mantha scores. Forget all this no room for Mantha in the top 9. You do realize once he reaches his full potential, all the other guys named will be trade bait.

People are quick to whine about Jarnkrok being traded, but Mantha should be on the block.

Going to be a long wait until July 1st and these ridiculous proposals.

Konstantinov was one of the dirtiest players int he NHL.  Shanahan, Chelios, Hull are all big names who had of ice personality issues.  Probert was an alcoholic and drug addict who thought that his status enabled him to do pretty much whatever he wanted when you or I would have been in prison.  There was that story about Tatar blaring loud music among other things at all hours in the condo he was subletting from Helm to the point where the other residents wanted him evicted.

People complain to complain. Where I used to live in an apartment a lady complained because my alarm clock went off at 5AM, and I had to be at work at 6AM.

s***, I would have went next door and partied with Tatar if I was them.

I remember a certain RichDG whining and moaning about our 2013 draft selections. I'm beyond giddy that about 5 of those 8 are already showing stellar promise. When is Axe coming back?

Way too many armchair GM's on this board. They think they know everything but they really don't.

The same can be said for Jarnkrok being traded. They see things we don't, and with the drafting and depth in GR Holland obviously has a clue what he's doing. And before we try and give all the credit to Nill for being in charge of drafting, that is false. Holland was an amateur and pro scout before coming a GM. He knows exactly what he's looking for in a player.

Mantha scores the first goal, then rings one off the post. Wow, this kid is incredible.

Edit: Mantha with Datsyuk anyone?

Memorial Cup Val d'Or vs London Knights  is on Sportsnet tonight. Griffins play tonight as well. What a dilemma.

#2519749 Gaborik?

Posted by DatsyukianDekes on 08 May 2014 - 06:53 PM

Gaborik in the winged wheel has been a dream of mine for like 6 years now..

I have a feeling it will happen eventually, but probably when hes 39 years old

There are about three guys in the league that I feel would be unstoppable with Dats, and Gaborik is the only one that is actually feasible, with the others IMO being kane and crosby

Vanek ? The plays they could setup would be incredible.

This is no coincidence, he's that bad.

In the span of 24 hours, Johan Franzen has moved to No. 2 on our most popular buyouts list behind David Clarkson.

#2519544 Will Mantha join GR after the QMJHL playoffs?

Posted by DatsyukianDekes on 06 May 2014 - 09:47 PM

Mantha with 2 goals and an assist tonight as Val D'or takes a 2 game to 1 lead in the QMJHL finals.

Babcock was in attendance for the game as well

He's getting a "realgud" look at Mantha.

Buying out players only happens when there significantly overpaid. Franzen, regardless of ur own qualms with him, is worth 4 million, and would get more than that per year on the open market. Tootoo, whether u like him or not, doesn't play, and is therefore worthy of a buyout.

Sure Franzen has that ridiculously long contract, but I'm willing to bet he's still enough decent at 38. If I'm wrong when that rolls around ill change toon, but till then I believe

Then send him packing. Not looking at stats Franzen is not worth much. I would rather an asset in his place then a liability. He's Ovi except 1/10th the player, when he isn't scoring he doesn't do anything else.

That's really not true though.  Samuelsson, Kopecky, and Quincey all had much higher totals with other teams.  They all had their career years elsewhere.  Our biggest FA offensive success story is Hossa who, again, had his sixth best offensive season with us.  Now, you could argue that this is because we only ever sign role players and aging guys...but that would only further my point that our organizational philosophy is such that offensive production is not our primary concern.

But as I stated before, it's not a knock on any player or our philosophy or system.  It's just an acknowledgement that our current system does not revolve around high powered offense.  I'm not really sure why I'm even having to argue this considering 1) nobody has come to Detroit in recent memory and had a career year, 2) we haven't had anything close to a league leader in any offensive category in quite a long time, and 3) in the last five years have ranked 14th, 2nd, 7th, 19th, and 16th respectively.  The anomaly is the one year we did have a good offense not the three bad ones and one sorta good one.

Edit:  In in interest of fairness, Ian White had a career year with Detroit, eclipsing his previous personal best by six points, which is roughly the same as Samuelsson's improvement when he went to Vancouver.  I stand corrected.

Zetterberg was top 3 in scoring for the first two months before his injury. Datsyuk was top 10. Alfie was top 30 at one time during the season as well.

We don't sign high offensive players (since Hossa). If we got Vanek this offseason I would bet he scores 30-40 goals and gets over a PPG. It's hard to score a lot of goals when you have dmen that can't move the puck at all (Quincey, Lashoff, Kindl). When we had Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Stuart we were top 10 in goals for every year.

If you have all white collar workers, nothing gets done, despite a lot of conversation. If its all blue collar, there's plenty of sweat but often pointlessly.
Wings fans endless bitching online everywhere about Franzen is often missing the point. He's always been a bit floaty, and always been streaky, and has always been massively vulnerable to losses of confidence. But when he was having his good streaks in a better team at a better time, no-one minded.
He's not the man to be THE guy. He's best as A guy, and at his cap hit, that's what he should be. People screaming lazyness are being stupid. You can't be an elite athlete in any sport if you are lazy. The management have always spoke of his professionalism.
He just doesn't have a high enough compete or confidence levels to maximise his talents, and because he occasionally goes on incredible runs of form, people equate his off periods with a lack of effort.
Apart from his first season as a 4th line scrub, he's always been a reasonably defensively responsible perimeter player with the size and skill to surprise. But after those two great playoff series, fans see him as first line power forward and judge him by those expectations. But despite showing the ability from time to time, he isn't that player. And never has been.
He's a shy team first guy, who doesn't deal with being in the spotlight, but as a 3rd wheel on a line with a shooter and a passer (preferably one with speed and the other with serious intensity) he can thrive.
He's frustrating, disappointing and still very good in a secondary role. It really doesn't help that every time we see him get real chemistry on a line, Babcock breaks that line up. Maybe the coach can see the drop off coming, but he doesn't work with Dats or Helm very well, but does ok with Legwand and Zetterburg, and  definitely has chemistry with Nyquist. So he barely gets to play with them......
There is no doubt that his injury problems, particularly the resultant shying away from contact for a while, are a concern, but the guy still put up 40ish points in 50ish games on a depleted team...and his PPG rate in the playoffs was as good as anyone not named D or Z.
But he's the scapegoat because our kids give us hope for the future, and our higher paid players have all been injured, and the others have proved their mediocrity over time. The guy makes less than Weiss, less than Legwand, marginally more than Quincy and not a lot more than Sammy, and yet he's a disaster.
Guy's salary/PPG since his new contract is as good as anyone not on an ELC in that time.  And yet we should pay him 20m to go away to a rival team for nothing, while not yet having a replacement, because we are worried about a PPG decline that hasn't yet happened on a team that has spent the last 15 years specialising on squeezing the last drops out of aging pros. If it all goes **** up in 2-3 years, I'm sure we can do a deal to LTIR him.

Lucic costs 50% more and players like him are pretty hard to get hold of in the first place.

He also came close with 2 good scoring chances and forced 2 really good saves from Rask. But of course no-one else's turnovers count.

No-one is saying he is perfect. It just makes no strategic sense to get rid of him at this point unless something else is happening for sure.

People trying to turn this into a black or white either/or need to look at the reality.

Until we have someone to replace him, someone has to score those points. Dead wood leaves, cap goes up and worst case scenario we're stuck with and over-priced 3rd liner who occasionally goes on good runs.

Difference being, he was the reason a goal was scored on us in that game. Game might have been different if he actually tried to pass while skating instead of standing still.

I know i know, too much effort.

Well, after the playoffs this year I just have a weird feeling one of the young guys will be included in a trade for a top 4 dmen. Whether it's Tatar, or Jurco I'm not sure. It's pretty obvious what we need for next year and unless Boyle or Markov sign with us we will have to go the trade route.

#2517607 Grand Rapids Griffins - defend the cup

Posted by DatsyukianDekes on 27 April 2014 - 12:36 PM

I am not sure if this could happen but if i'm wrong someone please correct me.

Anthony Mantha and Val'dor are down to the final game, if they lose they are eliminated. Mantha should be able to come to GR should his team be eliminated which makes our team even better. I have a feeling he will score quite a bit of goals for us. This will also help him get ready to hopefully get a chance for the team next year. The kid is incredible.
