NHL could lose Air Canada sponsorship over headshots
TheUltraGame and one other reacted to commadore183 for a post in a topic
Good, maybe this will make the league take players' health more seriously. Chara should have gotten a game, at least, for shoving Pacioretty, whether to get away from him or to put his head into the stantion. It was stupid, careless and could have had fatal consequences. The league doesn't really give a s*** about headshots, what with piddly suspensions of 4 or fewer games. Just absolutely stupid of the league and someone will probably die before they finally wake up and take this s*** seriously. This is the same as the Bertuzzi/Moore incident. Sure, Bert and Chara didn't mean to break their opponents' necks, but Bert got crucified for it by damn near everyone (as he should), but Chara gets nothing from non-Canadiens fans? Hypocracy. Both are the result of stupid, mindless decisions and both had the victims badly injured. To simply take the blame off of Chara because of "poor rink design" is silly. ALL PLAYER know that there's that barrier between the benches, they pass by it damn near a hundred times a game. If Chara had simply hit Pacioretty but the force of the hit caused Pacioretty to hit that stantion, then I wouldn't have as big of a problem as I do now, but since Chara PUSHED Pacioretty (for whatever reason), the poor guy has a severe concussion and a broken vertebrae in his neck. Remember, if Chara hadn't pushed Pacioretty, the Canadien player would have had a sore hip at worse. It's disgusting how the NHL handled it. Bettman and his cronies need to go before the league can rise from "laughing stock" to "semi-legitimate" in the NA sporting world. -

Jimmy Howard watch thread
zoso and one other reacted to haroldsnepsts for a post in a topic
This board is often all about extremes, and as is often the case, the answer lies somewhere in the middle. I wouldn't pin this loss on Howard. But I would also say he didn't have a particularly great game. Even when it didn't affect the play around him, he was giving up rebounds on what should be relatively easy shots to corral. -

NHL could lose Air Canada sponsorship over headshots

Mothers do not HAVE to give their teenage kids allowances, especially if the kid does something wrong or gets in any kind of trouble. Say the kid is failing all his classes. Then the mother can tell him that she will not be giving him allowance until he gets his grades up. It's the same for corporate sponsors. Air Canada does not HAVE to continue to support the NHL if the league does something they don't like. Air Canada is allowed to tell the league that they will continue to support the NHL only if they address and fix the issue. -

Chara's hit on Pacioretty
mjlegend reacted to haroldsnepsts for a post in a topic
Well, now that the police are involved, this story made headlines again. Another shining moment for hockey. Thanks Montreal. You elevated an unfortunate borderline hit to the Bertuzzi incident, and once again hockey looks like a bunch of barbarians skating around braining one another without punishment. -
1 pointI don't know if anyone saw this, but literally THE EXACT SAME PLAY happened in the Buffalo-Pittsburgh game earlier that night. Can't remember the 2 players involved, but the Sabres player was trying to beat the Penguins players along the boards. The Penguins guy got beat, came in late from the side, and slammed the Sabres guy into the turnbuckle. To be honest, that play looked like it was done with more malicious intent than this one. And yet, nobody is talking about that play being a dirty hit...nobody is demanding a suspension from the Penguins player...and no sponsor is threatening to boycott the game based on that play. As harsh as it may sound, the only two reasons were discussing this right now is 1.Pacioretty got hurt, and 2. it's two players and teams with a recent history. Obviously, it's unfortunate what happened to Patch, and my thoughts and prayers are with him and a speedy recovery. But to be honest, there was nothing dirty about that hit. It was a play you see all the time, just with a tragic end result. That should be the end of it

For those who say intention doesn't matter and the punishment should be judged only by the outcome, think about this: murder and kill (dunno if it's the correct legal term). Two guys get into a fight on a balcony - yes, on a balcony - and the other accidentally falls because of the contact and dies. Elsewhere, a guy intentionally pushes other guy from the balcony to his death. Now, are these two cases identical in terms of the punishment because of the same outcome? Maybe some of you think Chara did it intentionally, which I find veeery hard to believe. Still, there are some people where who say that it "doesn't matter if it's intentional or not". Now, that I find absurd. -

This is March, a bit closer to the playoffs and the team is more healthy. At February of '08 they were ridiculously injured, but still all but already had a #1 seed wrapped up and there was pretty much no doubt where they stood going into the playoffs. That month stunk but pretty much everybody already knew the Wings place going into that postseason with nobody breathing down their neck. Not the end, but they are just wildly inconsistent lately. It can't be expected that they "flip a switch" per se every post season like they did in 2009 when the defense for most of the year was very bad. Could something similar happen this go-round? Of course, but again not wise to expect such a scenario every time. I'm not a doom and gloomer, I rarely ever get into calling players worthless or want to burn their heads at the stake, plenty of other teams would kill to be in the situation the Wings are in presently which is all but in the playoffs, and it's impossible to play balls to the wall every game in such a lengthy season, I don't care what team you are and I don't care if we're talking hockey, the NBA, or Major League Baseball where you play 160+ games a season. It's just not always going to be there. Which is why I rarely go suggesting trading so-and-so or benching somebody for 10 games to tell them to wake up, because this team has the personnel to win more often than not. But if they want to make a deep playoff run the attention to detail and urgency has got to be better. It's that simple, at least in concept of course. A little more urgency and effort and their chances to win are that much greater. And before anybody comes with any possible responses like I'm lowering my expectations to not be as disappointed or I'm stupid for not fully believing or that I'm giving up or throwing in the towel, and some of you know who you are, you can stick it where the sun doesn't shine. That's not what I am meaning and you know this. If there's anything I really hate regarding stuff like this, it's the doom and gloomers who say we are f**ked from minute one (which isn't what the original poster's tone is, not even close, just normal concern) as well as the pom-pom cheerleaders who yell at others for showing question or a slight inkling of doubt. Both sides are equally aggravating and you all know who you are in here. We all want the Red Wings to win in here. -

1 pointPacioretty had a big hit on a Boston player earlier in the game, dove to draw a penalty and f***ed with Chara last game after scoring in OT. But I'm sure the Bruins, the stand-up guys they are, put all of that aside when they are on the ice each shift. Chara = guilty esteef

Chara's hit on Pacioretty
thegerkin reacted to Drake_Marcus for a post in a topic
I honestly don't give a s*** about his intentions at this point. His victim has a broken ******* neck and severe concussion. Did anyone care that Bertuzzi didn't mean to break Moore's neck? Did anyone care that the guys piling on Bert and Moore afterwords almost certainly worsened Moore's neck injury? Nope. If I plow into the back of a guy's car on the highway my insurance company doesn't give two s***s about my intent. -

wingnut40 reacted to NeverForgetMac25 for a post in a topic
:nonono: Jesus! These comments blow my mind. Its so easy for anyone here to talk about money when its not theirs. Any team in their right mind would pay upwards of $7.5-$8 million per for a Norris Defenseman in the NHL, yet people ***** because they feel Nick (who's taken paycut after paycut) should make even less than $6. Get real people. -

Even the 6 million was a cut from his last contract, right? And he has looked better this season. You can't have it both ways, he was never low-balled himself as far as I'm aware of, I don't see that continuing. Look at it this way, could you spend the 6 million any better? When you ask that, it starts to look more like the discount it is. -

My friend Denise turned 65 and retired last week. Her kids and grandkids surprised her with a party. She is happy and healthy and surrounded by loved ones. Two years ago, she was surrounded by loved ones as well. She was sick, weak, and bald from the chemo, and they didn't know if she'd make it. I love a happy ending.
