I hope someone kicks his ass into next week. -

Lidstrom agrees to 1-year, $6.2m contract

Lidstrom returning? With the numbers he has (4 Stanley Cups, 6 Norris, numerous All-Star appearances, Conn Smythe winner and Olympic gold medalist), he would command MUCH more than $6.2M on the open market, so he is taking less money to play with the Wings than if he were to go anywhere else. -

Oh, so because Lidstrom has already made a lot of money, he should take peanuts to spend even MORE time away from his family and bring in ticket sales, merchandise sales, and an even better product to the Detroit Red Wings because he owes it to them? What a joke. -

I would think the presser I heard about but can't find a link to is unnecessary at this point. We know for sure Nick is coming back and I don't think anyone cares in the least what we're paying him, so we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief and move on to more important matters like what we'd like to do with Hudler. Link to Wings announcement. -

Holy crow. That picture makes Nick look like the lovechild of himself and Mickey Redmond. -
1 pointIf the cap had gone down, that would have been a statement he could make, but a player of his calibre taking a pay cut when the cap goes up makes no sense whatsoever. I'm thrilled he decided to play another season, and the Wings could pay him 10mil and I wouldn't bat an eye. This is a man who has taken pretty major home town discounts in the past and has deferred his own salary so we could sign other players. IMO, Nick has given the Wings more than his fair share. Welcome back, Mr. Lidstrom.

1 pointBeautiful, that post is all WIN! Stevie was a fraction of his former self, he was playing 3rd/4th line role. I love the guy, but he was no longer a point per game player, not saying he wasn't good, and that he wasn't still the best Red Wing Ever, IMO, but there was a dip in performance and some very tough injuries. Steve was a warrior no doubt and played with a ton of heart through a ton of pain that would have forced others to retire. Conversely Lids is still (depending on your opinion) a or the top defenseman in the game, put up 62 points, granted his plus minus was atrocious and the worst of his career, but he was a Norris Candidate, and IMO was the best D-man in the game this season. He is still the top D man on this team, soon that will be Kronwall, but for now it is Lids. He deserves to be paid the most on the team, he is still the team MVP, again he just played a full season, he has now played 76+ games in every season of his career except 94-95. Lids will never replace Yzerman as the greatest Wing of all time, however he deserves to be paid more than Stevie did at the end of their careers.

He's the face of the franchise, team captain, will be playing until he's 41, is a finalist for the Norris trophy once again and people want him to take a pay DECREASE? We should be glad he's back for that cheap. -

Yzerman had gone from being the best player in the league not named Gretzky or Lemieux down to centering a second or even third line. Lids has been the best defenseman in the world for more than a decade. -

Lidstrom has already taken pay cuts. He was once making 10 mil a season before the lockout. He will likely win his 7th Norris Trophy on Wednesday. 6.2 mil for Lidstrom is more than fair. Holland is not going to act like a jackass and ask him to take yet another paycut. The Wings are a class organization and treat their players accordingly. I don't know how anyone can be upset about Lidstrom making 6.2 mil a season. Thanks for the laugh though. -

Yeah, I guess him being the captain, going to media events, winning the cup four times as a key contributor and being the best defenseman of the past decade or so doesn't constitute as going beyond the call of duty. What a selfish knob. -

Yeah, I am with you NFM. I dont understand why people always want superstars to take paycuts because they have been in one place for a long time. Lids has given us everything. Hes still competing for the Norris. Find 5 other defensemen that can put up 60 points. Pay cut? Why? Because he is not 26 anymore? I simply dont get it. Lids is worth whatever Holland will pay him. We should count our lucky stars that he is and has been on our team. With once-in-a-generation players it doesnt matter about money. -

That a serious injury to a player, one month into the season when he's starting out on a new team, can reduce his effectiveness for the entire season. -

Pucks reacted to eva unit zero for a post in a topic
Babcock suddenly dumping Hudler, who had the team's hottest scorer in February, to the fourth line for the last couple weeks because Franzen couldn't do anything offensively is not a matter of Hudler playing poorly. It's a matter of "f***, we 'need' Franzen to be in playoff mode." And it never happened. Hudler outplayed Franzen even after he was taken off of Datsyuk's wing and Franzen was put back there. And in the playoffs. Franzen was terrible for the last few months of the season including playoffs.
