If I was to start a hockey league, this is how it would look, from an on-ice standpoint: -No trapezoid area. Goalies can freely handle the puck. -Players make their own decisions regarding facial protection. -No instigator penalty. Let the players police themselves. -Head hunting rules in place, however not nearly ridiculously touchy as today's NHL head hunting rules. -Tolerance for a bit more obstruction (Hooking, holding, interference) than today's NHL. -No penalties for "Delay of game" As far as off the ice: -No salary rollbacks on player contracts. Once the deal is done, its done. I don't have many other concrete opinions as to what it should look like off the ice. No greedy owners. No greedy players. Obviously, starting a new hockey league in North America wouldn't be easy. The NHL is the top dog. It'd be hard to compete in cities that have NHL teams. Then again, since those NHL teams are constantly locked out, now would be a great time to give it a shot. Who's in this with me?

I find either side stupid if they use the "they should be grateful" card. The players need owners to run the league and the owners need the players to play in the league. Both sides need the fan support to make the league viable. Both sides are stupid, and I think Jimmy was way out of line with his comments.

I am going to support minor league hockey this year. Its cheaper anyway.

Some people have suggested that the owners could just replace their cattle with different guys who are willing to play for less. I think perhaps these people should watch the NFL and reexamine the idea of replacing skilled people with less skilled people.

I concur 100%. Making a deal should not be that hard if both parties would look for a solution which is in the best interest of the league and not in the best interest of the owners or the players.

I agree...a brand new league will face the same problems in the future. As long as the players have a saying in how much their employers are required to pay their employees these things will happen!

The players gave ground with every proposal they've made. As has been pointed out multiple times, they're not asking for anything more. They just want to lose less. If we're trying to meet in the middle and you start by backing up 100 yards, it doesn't really matter if we both take 3 steps forward.

my take was that we needed to hit up the ole' " offer sheet on evander kane, kyle turris, etc...) and lose the draft picks. that is a retool idea that carries water. we have lots of talent coming up from the griffins in the next 3-5 years. establishing the next core is important to do now! the trade front is drying up, our used parts are great, but not worth much out in trade. UFA and offer sheets are the next best thing. when was the last notable trade for the wings? Lang? seems like the other owners are done with us, so why worry about making them mad? hell, we had to go through yzerman to get quincey...i dont think the other 29 teams are going to help us until we have 20 year olds to sell. that will not happen unless we tank ala edmonton style.

It falls apart when you consider that if all the players left for some other league, then that league would become the best in the world.

But the thing is that I think people seem to forget is that these owners were so rich that they went out just for the fun of it or maybe they saw a good investment of some of their money and bought an NHL team....They are holding all the chips and I think they got to a point where they didn't want it to end up like the NBA or the NFL or heck even baseball now where all you had was a bunch of spoiled players demanding and getting 100's of millions of dollars when they aren't worth that. Why is it now I'm seeing comments that the AHL is so much better because no big money is involved. Or I see people talking about how college football is sooo much better because the players are playing their hearts out for the game and not the big money...to a point because ncaa players are playing for those big contracts but you see my point.

Maybe Zenit can sign him to some monstrous contract.

You know what was weird. I turned on the TV yesterday and there was this game on where a bunch of guys ran around in the grass playing catch and hugging up on each other. I thought they called it foosball? I don't know, it was rather weird, but without a hockey game to turn to, I just kept watching. ARE YOU LISTENING NHL?

Hasek has more of an argument for number 1 than anyoen could make for him all the way down at 5. The top 3 should be Lidstrom, Hasek Jagr without question..

Cool images, but I agree with the Mayor. Its easy to throw out these beautifully rendered, detail-less forms with pretty lights and get everyone excited for USS Enterprise Arena, its another thing to add realistic construction detail, building codes, functional constraints, and budget. It's worth keeping an eye on, but right now its just a VERY pretty example of sculpture at the building scale; not functional architecture. If it does get done it will look NOTHING like that, in form or texture. Its the building version of a concept car. /architectsopinion
