Brilliant decision to not dress Kostin against one of the most physical teams in the league

I saw several coaching failures last night:
1. Up 4-0 and still going with 4 F - 1D on that disaster PP that lead to basically three shorties
2. Starting Walman on D in OT. He had a bad game last night in regulation and then made a shyte pass into Raymond's feet in OT which lead to the winner. 
3. Not playing the 4th line more

SY changed things.  MO is part of the change.  With SY our draft picks seem to be winners, he is not afraid to pull the trigger and make a bold move (whether it be buying out a player, trading a player like Mantha, or making a move in FA).  Most of his moves seem to good moves.  He had delivered us from the Kenny era of signing aged stars as the off season acquisition or re-treading guys for second stints like Sammy, Hudler, T. Bert.  Just my take on it.  

So who do we want that could realistically fall to us at #38?

A young goalie like Mrazek is going to have spells where he may underperform...Kenny protected a guy 8 years older who gets injured every year stumbling and flopping around behind the net after a puck mishandle.  Bad asset management.
If you want to see how good a goalie is, check them out during the shootout.  Petr has some talent.  Not sure if it will ever fully materialize, but he is a more valuable asset at this point in his career than Jimmy Howard.

I think we all understand your frustration. I will be angry if we lose any of Mrazek, XO or Sproul. Hopefully they grab Helm or Sheahan of all the guys left. My personal choice was to protect DD, XO & Jensen.

I am officially out on this team.  I cannot handle how ******* awful Holland is at his job.  Runs his team into the ground with bad contracts, and at least is given a miracle long shot at getting out on some if the player is taken.  The team should have 100% bad contracts unprotected.
I know it is unlikely... but wtf Mrazek might be better than Howard.  IF you were close to winning a championship, you might take that risk going with the more proven person... but Detroit is no where near that point now.  If I could take Mrazek in the expansion draft, I would because his potential is amazingly high, and a single bad year on a team with a bad defense is hardly enough to throw him out on.
Howard is not going to win a championship here in Detroit, and his contract is nigh untradeable.  
 
Mike Green shouldn't be on this list because he should have been traded for anything because of this.  DeKeyser also shouldn't be on this list, as he is the type of player that would come back to us later if we needed him.
 
The NHL right now is about two things.  Defensemen shortages, which will only get worse with another team added, and superstars that get coddled and protected by zebras.   When it comes to this draft, the two take away only lead us to ONE result that should be taken.  Protect our Defensive prospects.
 
Danny and Mike are not those, our window has shut, and neither are good enough to drag this team to a cup.  In fact Mike Green, is one of the worst defensive defensemen in the league. That was the reason he was dropped by Washington.  
 
However, Sproul and Ouellet?!?!
 
WTF, they are definitely going to be taken.  They might never become bedrock pieces of a team, but they are young and proven capable of contributing to a team at the second and third paring, and might end up being power play pieces.  These are the types of players that if all things were equal would be worth a 1st or 2nd round pick, but with Defensive shortages they might be worth a lot more after just one breakout year.
 
Mrazek, Coreau, Ouellet, Spoul, these are horribly risky to expose.  Combine that with the fact that Howard, Green, DeKeyser, are s***ty contracts and won't help in either rebuilding or competing.  This is enough to make you angry.
Furthermore, combined with the fact that the NHL keeps giving the cup to Pens and Hawks over and over again with bad penalties and drastically unbalanced amounts of power play time... it makes this whole sport empty.  There isn't any grit anymore when the rewards go to the worst behaving, and your team is run with extreme ignorance.  
I have the feeling Yzerman would have at least made us closer.  Holland has put us so far away, that we aren't going to be good until we crash and burn and get our own whiner or rapist.
 
I am out.  The glory days before the lockout are all the NHL level hockey that I guess I will get in my lifetime that is truly quality.

If we are building for the future why do you protect all the old guys?!?!  Not protecting Oulette is big mistake as well.  
Mrazek has played brilliantly at times and can be a game changer.  His numbers suck a bit because our defense sucks big time.  We also suffer from a anemic offense so we fall behind...his numbers are a reflection of how sorry our team is...not on Mrazek's actual play.  
Mrazek has been brilliant on the shoot out at times...that should tell you something about the difference between Mrazek and Howard.  Mrazek's performance in the shoot out alone is worth 4 to 5 points a year.
Howard's numbers are better, but he gets hurt every year and takes half the year off with injury.  
 
 

Logical move is to keep Mrazek, cheaper contract, expires next year, younger... there is no single reason to keep Howard  (injury prone, older, more expensive and longer contract) over Mrazek...

Yeah, he’s only had sustained stretches where he was arguably one of the best goalies in the league and two overall solid playoff outings, one coming off a rough season when he was cold. I am not saying Mrazek is perfect, but I don’t see how anyone could reasonably argue that he doesn’t have more upside and value than Howard at this point. I’m not even saying Howard is terrible, but he’s certainly never been consistently great, he’s on the tail end of an average career and he’s making too much money. I don’t think either guy would necessarily be taken, but you’re playing with infinitely more fire leaving a guy like Mrazek hanging out for the taking.
Between Howard and Mrazek, who has the better shot of being a long term solution in goal: the consistently injury-prone Howard who will be 34 this season or the guy who will be 25 who’s shown he’s got elite-level upside Andy potential? He very well may not get there and he could disappear, but given our lack of guys with elite-level potential, we simply are not in a position to be giving that kind of talent up for free. It’s absurd.
This guy was in the Vezina conversation a couple years ago and hasn’t dropped off as much as some suggest and has had two respectable playoff outings for a young goalie now. He came off the bench and gave a very mediocre team a chance to win some games in the 2016 playoffs when Howard couldn’t deliver.
And let’s be perfectly honest: if Howard was doing his job as well as he’s being paid to, Mrazek would still be in a position to simply be developing instead of being thrown into the fire as a young goalie on a lousy team. Mrazek wasn’t even supposed to be on this team so early, but our long-time “starter” hasn’t been able to hold onto the position for any period of time recently either.
So yeah, let’s protect Howard. Brilliant.

Typical forum BS of focusing on one of the few bad stickhandling moments and holding it against him forever. Lots of great goalies have had horrible moments in huge games. Get over it. The big picture here is pretty damn simple: you have one goalie who has a long career ahead of him and a lot of upside and another who's never done much in his career winding down, and you protect the guy on the way out either way with the albatross contract??? Idiotic. 

If Mrazek gets taken, Holland should be fired. He hasn't been even close to perfect, but he's one of the lone promising players with upside on this roster. We are not in a position to be taking chances on people with as much upside as Mrazek. He's one of a handful of guys on this roster capable of being elite at his best. You don't protect Mrazek over an old, injury prone, inconsistent Howard who's never won anything in a much longer career. Likelihood of either being taken or not, this is a joke. 

I disagree that he has underperformed more times than not.  He has overperformed at times and then at times underperformed.  I guess you forgot about the 2016 playoffs against Tampa...we started Howard.  We lost back to back games 3-2 and 5-2.  Brought in Mrazek and won the next game 2-0.  Game 4 we lost 3-2.  Game five we lost 1-0.  
My overall impression is that Jimmie has been a very good goalie for the Wings over the years...but he is getting old and has a bigger contract on a team that needs some cap space.  His performance recently has been great...when it doesn't really matter.  When he was last given the reigns in the playoffs, he needed to be relieved by Mrazek.   Jimmie may have had good numbers last year, but he was OUT half the year!!
The more valuable asset is Mrazek as he has upside...will he achieve that, i don't know.  Neither do you.  
But to protect a depreciating asset like Howard over an asset with potential like Mrazek is probably a bad move.
I don't think i am alone in thinking this...
And i do think that Mrazek's success at the shootout coupled with Howard's lack of success in the shootout points to a talent gap between the two.  
I also agree that Mrazek could use some work...he is still a work in progress.  But he has more upside that Jimmie.  And Jimmie cannot play a full season anymore without a significant time on the injured reserve.  
But leave it to the Wings to protect assets that are depreciating...it is the theme of the past 7-8 years.

If he gets claimed and turns out to be a top 5 goalie eventually for another team, f*** that will be hilarious. Eh Holland? ******* idiot. Zero chance Howard or Coreau is looked at, so expose your goalie with the highest potential. You think Vegas cares about his prior mess ups? He's 24. Already showed a lot of promise. Even if they don't keep him, he'll get them something better in a trade than any other unprotected player on the Wings will. McPhee had already talked about "cornering" the goalie market, and grabbing a few and getting assets for them. Mrazek is in that category. Nice knowin ya Petr. May you show what you can do and shove it up Holland's ass while Howard's hurt and Coreau has to start.
