Saturday's Game Time

So the series will go to at least Game 5 in Detroit (hopefully it'll go longer, ha!) on Saturday.

The game time is 3:00pm ET which is 1:00pm Calgary time.

I think I can speak for most Canadians when I say that we like our hockey at night. I know there are lots of Canadians on this site (so you can let me know if I'm out to lunch), but what does everyone else think about this start time?

Personally hockey seems like a night time activity for me, especially Saturday nights. (Hockey Night in Canada) I like hockey to be the thing I go do on a Saturday night. I've heard that the afternoon times are to appeal to more Americans who aren't as up on Hockey. But for playoffs? Weak.

What are your thoughts on this?

Yah? or Nay?

Put me in the nay camp.

I'd prefer it to be much later. The later, the better to me. I don't have to be anywhere or anything, but watching hockey during the day isn't right to me.

Yeah well, would you rather have your games start at 10pm?

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but I don't understand why Calgary fans are complaining about afternoon games so much.

An afternoon game just doesn't feel the same. Hard to put a finger on why though.

I heard "grumbles" at work about early games too. Me, I don't mind either way.

What I hate though, is the 7pm PST games, it is 10 PM here, and when you get up at 6AM it makes for a grumpy person at work.

Personally, I hope the NHL does the Wings right, and puts them in the eastern conference. I mean, they are an origional 6 team, and they should be playing those teams more than once every couple of years.

Agreed you're complaining about a 1pm game??? Let's see last game started at 10ish and because both are great the chance of OT is good. So the game could get over well after midnight or later. So I doubt you'll get much support from the Eastern time zone people.

CBC has shown Afternoon games before during the regular season and they were two Canadian teams playing each other so I do not think it has to do with it only being for Americans. Since all these afternoon games are during the weekend which most people have the day off from work and have nothing to do in the afternoons so I see nothing wrong with Saturday’s game time. Plus it is a lot better than a 10 pm weekday start time when most people have to work the next day.

I greatly prefer night games, the later the better. I'm much more of a night owl. It doesn't matter how intense it is, I will always get tired and want to take a nap by the 2nd period of a day game. Although 3pm is better than that stupid 12:30/1:00pm crap NBC has been pulling.

the scheduling throughout the entire first round has been ridiculous...it's too bad the NHL has to give in to the networks...there should be 4 games one night, 4 the next and so one...no 3 day breaks and no back-to-back games, it would be more fair for all the teams

Hockey needs to be played at night... PERIOD!

That and well I won't be home until 4:30pm Thanks a lot wings for losing last night!

Yeah, I gotta say, complaining to Wings fans about game timing won't get a whole lotta sympathy. As the only team in the league whose fans have to put up with 10 PM start times (Columbus might too, if they could ever make the postseason), we kinda like it when western schedules have to bend around us a little bit for once.

Besides, I think 3 PM is a great start time. OK, I know it's 1 PM in Calgary, which is probably a bit early, but if you're a hockey junkie and you plan on watching all day that day, 3 PM is a great time to kick that off. I don't have any particular attachment to nighttime hockey.

I'd rather have night games too. I'm at work during the day all week and the last thing I really want to do on a Saturday afternoon is sit home and watch tv. Eventhough I have to get up a 6am for work, I'm a bit of a night owl so I kind of like the 10 pm games.

I am not really complaining, just seeing what you guys think of afternoon games.

With our time zone we never have to deal with late games, so that's a side of the deal that I've never really thought about it. I am sure it's quite the pain the in ass, especially if the game goes to OT.

But on the flip side when a game starts in Detroit at 7, that's 5 here. Lots of people work till 5, like me, so unless I can take off early I miss the first period. I rather be up late watching the game. Goes both ways I guess.

Some of my best memories in high school were just staying up late into the night, especially with OT games. I distinctly remember that one series we had with the Ducks that went on forever. I loved it.

Since college there hasn't been much of that. Though, watching game 1 of the Dallas/Vancouver series was a good throwback. I think those kinds of situations, going deep into the night make it much more enjoyable. It would have to be one hell of a 3pm game to keep us up that late, haha.

Night owl, here.
