GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 I like this signing very much. Maybe this will end all of the Yashin and Lindros junk we have been hearing. I had a feeling when St. Louis released Drake that he might end up back here in Detroit. Nothing spectacular about Drake anymore, but as mentioned he plays hard and can provide some grit and additional effort to the team. Welcome back to the Red Wings Dallas! Oh, and special props to Holland for this move. Well done.
Salviaman 104 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 Good! Now if we can get Markov back and sign Yashin or Forsberg then we got a team for next year!!!
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 Name I didn't expect! You called it Lou! Eh, I like Dallas Drake. Always have, even if he is 38. Glad to have him back here with the Wings. He was always a good gritty player, and plays with a lot of energy. Glad to have him back. Don't tell me your done though Kenny! Get Colby Armstrong next! elriqo28 2 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 I wonder what number he will take... Assuming Kopa gives it up the Rafalski... does Rafalski give it up to a former Captain? of course kopecky gives it up. and i believe rafalski will probably get 28 since its the only number he has worn. drake is a number ****, and i believe kopecky has worn a couple different numbers as a red wing. the question is, what will drake take, since 10 isnt available and 28 is gone. redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 (edited) didn't Koopa wear 32 at one time? He will defenitly give it up though Rafalski been in the league for a while and senoirity rules Edited July 9, 2007 by redwingfan19
Mudvayneowns91 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 What a treat........... i just hope we sign someone like Forsberg if he's not wanting too much money
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 Fills a need on the team and he comes at a bargain price. He's old, but he's just made this a tougher team to play against. With the loss of forwards the Wings have suffered, this was an important move to keep them from slipping from where they were in April and May. Yup. I don't see how anyone can be upset over this; only a fool would think he's supposed to be the top-sixer we've been praying for. We need a tough, hard-hitting depth guy or two, and Drake is that kind of guy. And his salary is basically a bag of beans. I like.

Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 Best part of it is he's cheap! This means the Wings could still go out, sign another player in free agency, and still have a ton of cap room left to make a big splash at the deadline. I enjoy watching Drake play, and I'm actually really glad the Wings signed him. It's about time Kenny went out and signed a player who can actually hit. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 This signing was so predictable its sad. I have no problem with adding Drake, but I hate the fact that we are likely done adding anyone and will just sit on $5 million in cap room for some miracle trade at the deadline. Its just like Greg Johnson last year. Come on Kenny take a freakin chance for once and sign someone who can actually score. Holland will never win on this board. People on this board slam him for not signing a gritty depth player. Drake is a gritty depth player, and a damn good one. Drake is comparable in ability defensively and physically at this point to Michael Peca, who many wanted, yet will cost the Wings the same salary as had they filled his spot with an AHLer. Drake at the league minimum is the perfect signing to fill out our forwards.

YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 (edited) Jesus Christ! why should we follow expensive no-phukin-cares or injury-all-season-longs? Actually, in the Mlive article, it says the Wings might wait around for Forsberg, and if his foot proves to be in good shape, they might pick him up, although its purely specualtion. However, it might be a good path to take given that most teams wont have the room to sign Forsberg mid-season (December?), and it would also allow the Wings to trade for somebody at the deadline. Anyway you cut it, the guy is still nearly a point per game player in the regular season AND in the playoffs. Edited July 9, 2007 by YoungGuns1340
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 (edited) Good! Now if we can get Markov back and sign Yashin or Forsberg then we got a team for next year!!! I would say it's pretty certain that Markov does not want to and will not come back to the Red Wings. Also, we do not need Yashin and/or Forsberg to have a team next year. This group of guys can do pretty darn well, without adding either of those has-beens to the roster. Edited July 9, 2007 by GoWings1905
Barrie 900 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 Well, it's not really a deal to get to excited/bummed out about, whatever side you are on. To me it's more or less a whatever kind of move. If Drake doesn't work out, at $550,000 who cares? If it works, great!! I just hope at 38 people don't expect him to lay out huge hits all the time.

And you know that Markov doesnt want to come back to Detroit how? And Forsberg and Yashin are hardly has beens. They were both on pace to be 70+ point players this year. Ill take those has beens any day.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 I just hope at 38 people don't expect him to lay out huge hits all the time. Age doesn't matter. Drake is very physical and I would expect him to lay out huge hits no matter how old he is.
Guest Crymson Report post Posted July 9, 2007 Let's take your example one step further. I guess you could say that against a brick wall, Sherman tank, 747 Boeing and the list goes on and on, that he is an utter wuss. Tthank God i'm not concerned about him hitting guys that are 6-5 or 6-6 and around 235 lbs. My hope is (fingers crossed) that he'll be able to hit just a couple of the 650 or so players in the league that fall far below those vital statistics. are you catching my faint hint of sarcasm here? Yes, but I don't understand what you mean.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 I just hope at 38 people don't expect him to lay out huge hits all the time. Is there some imaginary line I dont know about between ages 37 and 38. Drake was dishing out big hits last year at 37, and suddenly just because hes a year older thats all going to stop?

They were both on pace to be 70+ point players this year. Ill take those has beens any day. I thought it was generally understood that Markov wants to go elsewhere? Or, more specifically, that he doesn't like what the Wings are willing to offer. Forsberg and Yashin -- no thanks. To me, that would reek of signing a big name for the sake of signing a big name. WingNut199 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 (edited) I think a line of Mule Drake Cleary would be great, that line could be the new checking line, while Draper Maltby Samuelson could be a good energy line. or Mule Flip Cleary Draper Maltby Drake The one thing this team has a lot of now is versatility! Mule-Drake-Cleary sounds like a solid physical line that we need (think playoffs) Edited July 9, 2007 by WingNut199
