Markov Signs in Russia

He will play in Russia for 1.8 but not in Det for 2.something.

That is some messed up logic my friend!

That does look strange. Even though those $1.8 million are his take-home pay, after tax, I don't think $2.5 million before American taxes would become less than that after taxes.

Very strange indeed.

Do you think that maybe he didn't like it here in Detroit or didn't get along with someone in the organization?

Why would you take less money to play in Russia? Maybe he just though it was time to return home and end his career in his home country.

It's too bad, i really liked watching him play and the style he played was somthing that we needed in Detroit.

I'm not sure on why he went back to Russia, his brother is still playing here.

also, with the way the wings are playing and Meech not being able to go down, I doubt the offer was still there.

money hungry?

maybe. but that doesn't make sense since it looks like he will be making less by playing in that super league.

can i blame him for wanting to go home and play? not really.

but you dont see Zetterberg signing in Sweden to stay close to home, dont at all doubt its hard, but that is part of the NHL deal

Who's his brother? (If you're referring to Andrei, they aren't related)

update 12:16pm, from the CP via TSN,

Veteran defenceman Danny Markov has signed a two-year deal with Moscow Dynamo, his agent Jay Grossman confirmed Friday.

Grossman would not say but it’s believed the deal is worth around US$4 million. The contract has an out-clause that lets him return to the NHL next summer.

I think part of the reason why he left was so he wouldn't have to accept a lower price than what he was asking for. He probably was looking for around 3+ mil/season, and when he figured that no one would pay that he just left to prove a point and not dumb down to those offers.

I'm surprised to see that he actually signed in Russia for less cash, after being a stickler for money in the NHL. I figured someone would overpay for him, or he'd just end up back with the wings at some point.

Damn though, he would of been a great addition to an already solid squad.

Raf/Lids

Markov/Kronwall

Cheli/Lilja

Lebda

would of been dynamite!!!

Well that would explain it!

Not surprising at all if this is true. I've had very mixed feelings about the cap system, but it's not good at all for the league if mid-level European players like Markov can find a better deal back home. This will really expose how overexpanded the league is if this trend continues.

thats too bad, i just cant believe he left for less money....i mean i know its his home and everything

You can't believe it because it's not true.

1.8m take home would be close to 3m before tax in the US, which is more than Markov was being offered.

Who the heck knows what's up with this scenario? I don't know much of the in-depth details, but maybe Markov wanted to go back to Russia all along? Him or his agent had bitter feelings towards any offers that Holland or other GMs might have offered?

I don't think anybody will know what will have went on in the minds of Markov or his agent through this process other than the two of them.
