Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted October 27, 2007 Options? Howard Osgood one of these guys? http://www.nhlnumbers.com/freeagents.php?t...&status=ufa or, if your feeling really crazy http://www.nhlnumbers.com/freeagents.php?t...&status=rfa I have not seen enough of Howard to make a call on him. Do you guys think is the Wings future in net? Personally, I think it would be nice to develop a goalie from within rather then take chances on a FA
rwfan007 18 Report post Posted October 27, 2007 kipper is a solid choice, he is young-ish and personally, dom has worn his welcome and we need to find a long term goalie. since '02 we have been playing musical chairs with goalies so we need to make a long term move. sirdrake1 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2007 when you think about it the red wings only allow 10 shots a game on average. i dont see why we just dont get one of our cheap-to-play-players like chris chelios to play goalie.

Guest Canadian Wings Report post Posted October 27, 2007 hasek is 37? haha i wish i'd go with kipper obviously but realistically we won't be able to get him since we have to lock up Z... there's not too many better options, i think huet would be my 2nd choice as he is still young - or just get howard ready to take the job (unless we can sign a goalie for only one year which i doubt)

55fan 5,133 Report post Posted October 27, 2007 I haven't counted Dom out for this season. I do think he has one left in him, maybe more. However, it is true that he will be retiring for good in the near future. I like an Ozzie/Howard tandem. Ozzie can still do the job and do it well, and he'll be there to groom Howard for the eventual starting role. It's great to have such talent.

puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 Depending on how this season goes, I expect to see an Ozzie/Howard tandem in 2007-2008. There are not really any realistic choices who will play for the same money or as well as Ozzie. The management may have to give up the idea of putting another #1 in front of Oz, and give him the nets. Wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen. As for Dom wearing his welcome out... This season, he pretty much had to come back, after a great season and playoffs -- or else he would have been viewed as "abandoning" the Wings again with no other choice in goal, due to the salary cap. He wanted to come back, too, no mistake. The management wanted Dom back, and were no other affordable #1s available. Damned if he comes back, damned if he doesn't, someone is going to complain, no matter what. So, just do whatever you want, Dom. I could see Marty Biron fitting well in Detroit, still, but he's not better than Ozzie.

Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 It all depends on how Howard plays. If he's really good, they'll go with Howard/Osgood...with the hope being that Howard assumes the #1 job with Ozzie being the fallback safety net plan. If he's not a stand out goalie this year in GR, and Hasek is gone, i think they'd actually go the Kipper route. I just really dont think they'd go into a season with Osgood as the clear #1 imo. gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 Given Howard's great camp and Osgood continuing to play well this year, I have no doubt in my mind at all that next year will see an Ozzie/Howard tandem and it'll be a year too late if you ask me. Ain't hatin' on Dom, but I just don't think it was a necessary move to bring him back. Sans Legace, none of our playoff issues tend to be goaltender related. Osgood and Howard may not be the best but they're more than capable of getting the job done given the team we have and moreso could have if we stopped putting so much money towards goalies and more towards a deeper offense. To me it seems like the whole big-name goalie thing has far more to do with ego than the actual reality of what the team needs to succeed.
vangvace 12 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 Relatively recent home grown starting goalies for the Wings include only Osgood and Cheveldae. Kinda scary if you ask me. Will Howard be next? I doubt it, but haven't seen the kid nearly enough to say that with certainty. Bryzgalov, Osgood (even though I don't like him), Lalime (backup), Lundqvist are all viable options. Fluery too, but we couldn't afford to pry hime out of Pitt. Lundqvist will be playing somewhere else next year because the Rangers won't be able to afford him. norrisnick 1 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 Oz and Howard. The way the skaters up front play it makes no sense to spend more than $2M total on goaltending. It'd be overkill.
SweWings 45 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 All I'm gonna say is - if the Rangers somehow let Lundqvist go...then the management is just silly...

hckypete96 3 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 i swear the people who are obsessed with osgood on this site crack me up... the guy is a great BACKUP. There is NO WAY that Holland will start him next year. Ozzie is havin a great year so far, but he only plays well in the backup role.
Flip-check 6 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 Depending on how this season goes, I expect to see an Ozzie/Howard tandem in 2007-2008. As for Dom wearing his welcome out... Yeah, I don't know what rwfan was thinking either. That was kind of ignorant, Curt, to be fully honest. If Howard plays well in GR, Ozzie and Jimmy are likely what we'll see. I think the best realistic pick for us would be Bryzgalov in the event of Howard having a poor Griffs season... but I expect that he (Bryz) will be put out of our reach by other more desperate teams. Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 I'd like the Wings to go with the Howard/Ozzie tandem for at least a season. We need the cash for Zetterberg, and by the time they figure out whether Howard is going to work out or not, Lidstrom will most likely be retired, so the Wings will have 7+ freed up in that. ...not saying I want Lids to retire, but in 2 years it looks like that may be the reality. Spongewingredpants 75 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 jonas hiller won the swiss cup as a rookie during the NHL lockout. He faced tons of NHl elite players. hiller is most certanily the guy I would want to have as a backup to be developed into the number 1 on any team. You saw his first NHL game in London, which he played magnificently. He is the real deal
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted October 28, 2007 :rotflmao: I'm guessing the Flames will do everything that they can to keep Kipper. As for Huet - well if the Habs aren't in the hunt for the playoffs come trade deadline he'll be probably traded, & there's a good chance they won't re-sign him either if the Habs are happy with Price (with Halak backing him up)...Is Huet better than Osgood I don't think so. Of course, here in Motown, we have the Ozzie's a Bum club and the ABH (Anybody but Hasek) contingent, who would be happier with anything else besides the goalies we currently have. I wish the Wings would give Ozzie and Howard a chance, just in case Jimmy really is what the brass hope he is... a franchise goalie for the future.
