Another cheap shot from a Flyer

I know the rest of you might attack me for this, but I'd love it if the Wings were doing all this and not the Flyers. I know we don't have the personnel for it, but I'm just saying that as a fan, I'd love knowing that my team is feared by other teams for their physical and sometimes dirty play. It creates this us against the world mentality. They're not quite the Broadstreet Bullies yet, though. That team was loaded with enforcers, so this team has quite a ways to go.

Nah. This is hurting hockey, not helping. If they were a winning team with talent and braun that redefined the way the games was played, that would be something to behold. But they are just cheap-shot artists.

I guess I just for once would want to cheer for a team full of cheapshot artists.

The Broadstreet Bullies:

Philadelphia Flyers 1973 to 1976

Philadelphia Flyers 2007 to ?

except that 1973-76 was a mix of guys who were tough and could fight.

2007 Philly is just goons who put all the effort into cheapshots and headhuntung

that's not hockey

no, I'd absolutely hate to see Wings going that low. fortunately, this ain't gonna happen now and for some time, at least

I guess I just for once would want to cheer for a team full of cheapshot artists.

there's always Nashville and Philly. pick one and you're fine.

Then root for the Flyers, if the team you want to root for is not the team and does not have the tendencies to be what you want to root for than maybe you should find a team that plays dirty, tries to injure, and are being flat out thugs.

OR

You could stay a wings fan and root for the organization that has been classy upstanding for years.

I am all for rooting for whatever team you want, If you want that team to fight more that is fine, but saying you want to root for a completely different style of team than the one you are rooting has ever been. (even in the Dead Wings era they weren't thugs.)

Remember these Flyers are not playing Gordie Howe hockey, or old school Hockey. They are doing things that are down right disrespectful to the game and it's past.

The game has a bad enough image with out this. This team has 5 players that have been suspended in 25 games, that is ridiculous and completely unnecessary, and the worst of all is that this last one was the closest to clean, followed by the Jones hit on Bergeron.

Theres a man I've heard... a man of legend.... they say his elbows can dent a stanley cup, and his cheapness is rivaled by few. Rumor has it he hides away in the depths of southern California.... as the king of the ducks. He used to be known as a Mr. Chris Pronger, but the locals call him duck man

I wouldn't want a "dirty" team in Detroit. But when you said

I'd love knowing that my team is feared by other teams
I agree with that completely. For example, Tues. against Calgary Phaneuf creamed Hudler and I was pissed. Lilja goes after Phaneuf in a fight, but there's like 2 punches landed total and the fight is ended in like 5 seconds because they both slipped. I want some retribution. It'd be nice if we were the ones creaming them a lot more than they are us. I'd love to know that their players need to be extra careful to not do things like skating with their head down around us. Or at least when our players do get rocked...... I'd like to see the favor paid back in full

What I don't understand is why wasn't Phaneuf Suspended, He left his feet to deliver the hit, just like TooToo did to Matt Ellis on turkey day, as far as I'm concerned leaving you feet to hit a guy is "dirty" and should not be tolerated, unless of course your Chris Pronger, who can do no wrong!!

You misunderstood my post. I didn't mean that I wanted to cheer for another team, because I bleed red and always will, but that I wished the Wings had some of those elements, instead of having a team that's usually on the other side of those cheapshots.

I happened to intercept an internal E-mail from the Flyers organization:

Dear Flyer Personnel,

Please refrain from doing dumb stuff or we will be fined.

Thank You

Flyer Management*

*Flyer Management does not include Bobby Clarke who wholly endorses this "dumb" brand of hockey and if Valery Kharlamov were alive you could ask him.

I know exactly what you mean. At the risk of sounding deranged,...I cant help it, I like the Flyers. Im more upset that Cote has to miss 3 games than the incident itself! Something like what Hartnell did i show no love for whatsoever...but this doesnt bother me to be honest.

There was a massive size mismatch, but the Phaneuf hit on Hudlum was clean.

The only time he came up off the ice was as he was hitting Hudler, which happens a lot with open ice hits. Kronwall does it all the time as he follows through his check and crushes a guy.

EDIT: Kelsey Grammar

I said this already but I think this incident was the closest to clean and I will add I think it deserves a lesser suspension than Hartnell. He did leave his feat and his elbow was up, but the difference with the others is that the player was in a vulnerable position.

I think this fine was a little heavier because he was a flyer, had a star player done it to a flyer it would have been 2 games like Hartnell. But I think Hartnell deserved more than 2 games.

I know what you're saying, but I would never want the Wings to be this way.

Big, physical and feared, I'm all for it. Like the days when Probert and Kocur patrolled the ice. Plus they had Gallant, Norwood, Snepsts, and a lot of other guys who would mix it up.

But the Flyers have had 5 players suspended in 25 games played, all but one of them being pretty intentional cheapshots.

I'd be embarrassed if that was the Wings.

A good friend of mine is a die hard Flyers fan (The friendship was strained in the spring of 1997) and he tells me that he is very embarassed.

There's a difference between being a tough, feared team and being dirty and just acting like goons...

FTW.

You want to send a message or earn respect, you do it within the rules.

As for the punishment -- a warning? I'm sure they're shaking in their boots!

Riley Cote will get treated differently because he's an enforcer. The fact that Hartnell is the known cheap shotter of the two doesnt matter to the league because he scores goals...thats how its always been. If you reverse what each did, and Cote was the one with the hit from behind...he'd probably be out 20 games.

Same here. There's physical play and then there's what the Flyers are doing right now. Clumsy, embarrassing and completely unnecessary.
