I wouldn't mind seeing Howard and Ozzie split games from this point on, sorry Hasek :P .

He's a talented kid no question. In the 1-0 loss to Dallas last week he made some seriously impressive stops. Last night was just a day at the office, you can't win them all, but on that note for as hard as he works its a shame we can't get him a W when he's in net.

yeah his save % blows which is really the defining statistic for a goaltender. Daryl Sutter said it best "I don't care about GAA, I look for wins and a good save % in a goalie"

It's not hard to have a good GAA when you face 20 or less shots a game. For most of the season hasek has had a save .20% points less than osgood. this might not seem like a lot, but let me break it down.

Osgood 0.917%

Hasek 0.904%

MEANING, out of 1,000 shots. Osgood will stop 917 while Hasek will stop 904. THUS, Osgood lets in 13 less goals than Hasek.

For a guy who's supposed to be our starter, not so OSgood...lol

Save percent doesn't mean anything. Sorry.

Regardless, I'm not arguing whether he's the best goaltender in the world right now (not even sure why you even mentioned osgood), I'm just saying that the fact that some people here say he is washed up is ridiculous given the fact he's #1 in GAA. That at LEAST means he's a good goalie, especially given his bad stretch 4 months ago.

Not to take any away from Howard though, he's playing awesome for sure.

you must not really have a good concept of save percentage since you think hasek has stoped 20% less than osgood for "most of the season". Hasek has never been at 70% lol...

let me break it down for you:

hasek had a terrible start and sucked ball in the begining of the season. Before he got injured however, he was doing very well. His save percentage was slowly increasing every game, but never managed to get to the .91 + range due to his injury and lack of games played. If he were still playing now, I'm sure his numbers would be very similar to ozzys.

While save percentage does mean a lot, I wouldn't come to the "best goalie, worst goalie" conclusion based on it. If that were the case, Luongo or Brodeur would have the highest save percentage every year.

If Dom does retire next year then i really think we need to go out and get another goalie. I would not mind an Ozzie and Howard tandem if our team was middle of the pack or sucked. But we are the Red Wings for petes sake! It scares me a bit because what if Ozzie faltures and all the load is on Howard?? Is he ready for that? I say go out and get a solid goalie and let Howard back him up.

I know Ozzie gets the Yzerman treatment somehow on these forums and all. And I love Ozzie as a person but as a starter for a stanley cup contending team? And if he is not able to do that then we have Howard? I'm a bit scared next season.. :scared:

I think Howard will be fine. He just needs some starts. And with Hasek and Osgood, he hasn't had much of a chance.

As a side note. What do you guys think of Berkhoel (Gryphons)? I haven't had a chance to follow how he's been doing since he left Dayton. And the stats only show so much. He was clutch last year for our ECHL team in the playoffs. Just wandering how he has adjusted to the AHL.

How can save percentage not mean anything? That is pretty much one of the main criteria a goalie is judged upon in stopping shots. If the goalie doesn't stop shots, his save percentage isn't as good. This isn't like trying to solve world hunger here...

There are five goaltenders who have played as much as Osgood and have comparable numbers. Thomas, Luongo, Bryzgalov, Brodeur, and Giguere. Which of those goalies do you suggest is available and can fit in the Wings' cap space without harming the team more than any supposed advantage over Ozzie would help? Thomas is the only two on that list with a cap hit below 4m for next season. If he plays this well next season, he'll be looking at that kind of money when his contract expires in the summer of 09, and Boston can give it to him as that is when Fernandez comes off the books.

So nobody? Gotcha.

Don't be sorry. You apparently just don't understand the stat if you think it means nothing.

I won't get into a goalie war here, but GAA is a team stat more than it is a goalie stat. that goes for Hasek, Ozzy, and Howard.

Save percentage isn't the end all for judging a goaltender, but it's the best stat out there to give some indication of ability.

I know, just think how many more goals that would be for 10,000 shots, or 1 million, or 1 billion.

Save percent doesn't mean anything. Sorry.

And you just lost any credibility you had regarding goalies. GAA is a team stat. SV% relies solely on the goalie. Yes, you are going to pad your sv% with some easy shots but the goalie still has to stop it. Saying sv% doesn't mean anything is just, well, stupid.

And you, The Noodle 39, also just lost any credibility you had regarding goalies. So let me get this straight, you just said that you aren't sure if Howard can handle the load if Ozzie starts to suck so you suggest they go out and get another goalie so Howard can back HIM up? What if he starts to suck? So Howard is going to be able to handle it because Osgood is not the starter and some other goalie is? Osgood / Howard is going to be the best and cheapest option the Wings can get.

I bet you if Hasek was playing, he wouldn't have let in 4 goals last night.

You can't say that! Hasek could have let in 7 goals, or maybe 0 not a single person here knows for sure.

To answer the question. I feel confident in Howard. He'll have some ups and downs, but I think he could be a great No. 1 goalie. He is our future, and it's coming much faster then what people think.

Well what do you want me to say? Maybe we are screwed but there has to be something better out there lol. I think we should trade for a solid goalie then. Depending on who it is I'm sure he won't completely collapse like Ozzie. Osgood on a cup contending team scares me and Howard who I'm weary about as well is our so called young and up and coming future tender. I just think we are too good to have a descent goalie as our #1 for the next few years. Goaltending is very important in the playoffs and no offense but imo Osgood does not cut it. Now is it more important to have Howard backing up or Osgood? Does nothing for Ozzie and could potentially help Howard improve and develop.

There are many many goalies i would take over Ozzie. I think Ozzie is an awesome backup but with our team and Howard potentially on the rise i don't see where Osgood fits in. sorry...

Just quickly looked through the first few responces and it seems that there is alot of support for Howard as a regular. I for one don't care for his play much. I think its crazy for poeple to say to let Hasek go and let Howard play... I would let Hasek play for as long as he can. Hasek's numbers throughout his entire career speak for themselves and so long as he can play I say let him. Hasek, even playing half season, always puts up competitive numbers. If Hasek were to retire my feeling would be to bring in a new #1 goalie... I don't think either Osgood or Howard, nor the combo have what it takes for more of a role.
