shannyfan1414 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 Wantes to see what everyone thought. From the Feb. 26 issue of The Hockey News Best Trade - The Red Wings needed a power forward to put them ovver the top in the mid-1990s and Brendan Shanahan was available after requesting a trade from Harford. Wings coach Scotty Bowman sent Keith Primeau, Paul Coffey and a first round pick to the Whalers. Shanahan brought much needed size and toughness, as well as scoring, and helped the Wings win three Stranley Cups Worst Trade - Just as Adam Oates was developing into one of the games top playmakers, GM Jimmy Devellano traded him to St. Louis, along with Paul Maclean, for tow forwards well past their prime in Bernie Federko and Tony McKegney. Federko played one season in Detroit before retiring. McKegney appeared in 14 games before being traded to Quebec I will never forget when Shanny came to Detroit. He did everything he could to get here in time for the game that night and recorded him self a Gordie Howe hat trick that night. Can you think of any other trades that would be best or worst ever for the Wings?

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 The Chelios deal worked out pretty well. As did the Dominek Hasek one.
Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 uwe krupp? Acquired via Free Agency, not trade... http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?i...amp;hubname=nhl 07-Jul-98 - Signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings.
shannyfan1414 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 (edited) The Chelios deal worked out pretty well. As did the Dominek Hasek one. Chelios yes, Hasek was a free agent signing. HAHA, just kidding about Hasek 30-Jun-01 Buffalo Sabres traded Dominik Hasek to the Detroit Red Wings for Vyacheslav Kozlov, a 1st round selection (later traded to Columbus, later traded to Atlanta - Atlanta selected Jim Slater) in 2002 and future considerations. I hate when i'm wrong! Edited February 28, 2008 by shannyfan1414
StaticWithABeat 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 Yeah the Oates deal was crappy...he was restless and unhappy playing behind Yzerman all the time, the Wings were kinda handcuffed on that one. My vote would still go to the Marcel Dionne "trade." I have no qualms with Shanahan being named #1.

Wingsfan1988 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 Worst: Bertuzzi Trade, Oates Trade, Wendell Clark and letting McCarty and Lapointe go. Best: Shanny!!!!!! That deal put the icing on two CUP cakes. I think that Holland has done a stellar job but the biggest move sthe team has made have been in free agents and drafting great and virtually unknown talent. Kudos to Holland and their scouts. 58Miles2Joe 12 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 trading away Sean Avery worst move. But we got Schneider in that deal, and he played pretty good for a while...wait a second, I just talked myself out of that. Yeah, I agree with you.
skacore 2 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 I agree the Shanahan trade was a great one, it just sounds funny saying they were looking for a power forward with size so they traded 6'5 220 Keith Primeau for 6'3 220 Brendan Shanahan

PROBIE4PREZ 58 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 Avery is a disturbance to the locker room and to veterens no matter what he does on the ice... Letting Lapointe walk was a good move .. he was commanding like 4 mill back then when he had his best year ... his contract year. .. i didnt like the wendal clark trade lol .. what the hell was that about .. CHELIOS trade was a steal! HASEK was the greatest though

Although Primeau went on to do better things (at least in terms of his personal stats) in Philly, I was glad to see him go. As for Coffey, I was pretty unhappy to see him leave in the trade. He and Lids were magic on the PP. It took a while for Shanny to earn enough keep for me to forget about Coffey.

Dude, that's totally not true. sometimes Primeau tried to split the defense, lost the edge on his skate and slid harmlessly into the net (without the puck). The Oates trade is head and shoulders the worst one since I've been a Wings fan. In the end it was better for him, but the Wings got nothing in return for a player of his caliber. A.T.Hun 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 I'd probably agree with the two that they list. The very name "Federko" causes me to start shuddering. Of course, you could go back to some of the doozies that Jack Adams made because he was a megalomaniac: viz Ted Lindsay to Chicago.
Winged Scooter 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 (edited) Steve Chaisson (may he R.I.P.) for Mike Vernon was a damn good trade. Who did the Wings trade to get Bob Essensa and Sergei Bautin from Winnipeg? Because even if it was just a bag of pucks that trade was God awful. And for those of you that don't remember, Sergei Bautin was a throw in from Winnipeg on that trade, I think he MAY have appeared in one game for Wings. His claim to fame was that he was an overweight Russian D-man who liked to smoke in the locker room after games. I want to say that was the Drake trade... it was The following season he was part of a trade that saw him shipped to the Winnipeg Jets along with goaltender Tim Cheveldae. The Red Wings received goaltender Bob Essensa and defenceman Sergei Bautin in return. The trade was generally a wash for the Wings, as Essensa appeared in only 13 games and was not a factor in the playoffs. Drake went on to have a successful role on the checking lines and penalty kill units of the Winnipeg/Phoenix Coyotes organization. I hated that trade glad we got him back though Edited February 28, 2008 by OsGOD
