Hossa's agent hints about contract possibilities

Just reading this made my stomach begin to flutter. (I know, I know.. kind of dumb.)

But really, I used to not like Hossa. Now, I absolutely love him. Signing him would make my day - or maybe even life.

Could we afford to sign Hossa for 6 mil while "only" losing Hudler, Filppula, Sammy, Lebda, Cheli and Conklin?

Giving us this team next season:

Homer-Dats-Hossa

Leino-Z-Franzen

Kopecky-Helm-Cleary

Abdelkader-Draper-Maltby

Lids-Raffy

Kronner-Stuart

Lilja-Ericsson

Ozzie

Howard (Larsson)

Helm and Cleary are a mirror image of each other. I'd rather trade Cleary and keep Hudler..............

I'm really on the fence about having all these long contracts to players at or approaching 30 years, but on the other hand, we'd lose nothing in signing Hossa, and we'd gain a lot by trading Hudler AND Filppula, because thats probably whats going to have to happen.

Is Hossa going to take the same deal as Franzen or something?

If so, probably way more loaded on the front end. I would imagine.

They say that once a player retires, his salary comes off the cap. Well, what if they "retire" and then come out of retirement 6 months later and sign with another team?

Im thinking 8 years at 40 million cap hit 5 million a year

set up like this 8-8-6-6-4-4-2-2

Id prefer if he really wants to stay this way 8-8-6-6-4-3-2-1 Cap hit of 4.75

Okay so by my math, Sammy, probably Hudler and another guy are gonna have to go.

But all in all that's not a bad trade off for Franzen-Hossa-Dats-Zet.

I've thought for a while that Jiri especially would make nice trade bait, especially with the season he's having.

If you're just trading one, it would have to be Rafalski. Sam and Hudler are making peanuts and their replacements need contracts too. Particularly Leino who likely will make as much as Hudler is making now.

I agree. And Cleary's been terrible last couple of months.

But for some reason I think the chances are higher that they keep Cleary than Hudler.

Ya know... what's stopping Hossa from getting the 6 million per season for the next 4 seasons... then drop to 4 million for 2 and 1 million for 2?

6 - 6 - 6 - 6 - 4 - 4 - 1 - 1

Thats a 4.25 million dollar cap hit... and he gets the 6 million for 4 seasons!

Can Hossa do that for the D?

I dont think it could go from 4 to 1, itd have to go 4-3-2-1 or something like that because it cant decrease by more then 50% between any 2 seasons, BUT I could be wrong.

- It’s no surprise that Johan Franzen is getting an 11-year, $43-million contract that runs until 2021 to spread out the cap hit ($1 million the final two, years when he’ll be 38 and 39 years old). Same story with Henrik Zetterberg ($6.1 million cap hit over 12 years). They may eventually close that loophole, but Wings’ GM Ken Holland is simply playing by the rules now. And Franzen’s average cap hit of $3.95 million is actually close to what a veteran agent thought he’d get last week. Franzen will get $36 million in the first seven years, starting at $5.5 million next season — his salary more in tune with his tremendous goal-scoring ability. “Let’s see now, we have an 11-year contract and a 12-year contract, so I guess Marian will take 10 or 13 years,†laughed Hossa’s agent Ritch Winter, who talked to Holland about numbers Saturday, although Holland won't be able to sign Hossa until June because of their cap situation. Hossa is going nowhere. His cap hit will be in the $6-million range. “I will tell you this: despite what people are saying, the salary cap in Detroit will definitely be no impediment to Marian signing there,†said Winter.

That last sentence makes me feel all warm and tingly inside. I love that last sentence.

Correct.

If he wants 13 years, then this is a possibility:

8M-8M-8M-8M-6M-6M-4M-4M-2M-2M-1M-1M-1M

Cap hit: 4.5M

It would be nice seeing:

7.50 - 7.50 - 7.45 - 7.45 - 7.00 - 7.00 - 6.70 - 6.70 - 3.50 - 1.00 - 1.00

5.71 cap hit!

You can only dream :P

(If you guys play with the numbers yourself, signing Hossa seems like it is possible! Especially using the loophole in the CBA that Kenny already exploited for Zetterberg and Franzen)

Ritch Winter said the cap hit will likely be about $6m.

Based on that, and the other signings that have happened (Franzen and Zetterberg) here is the best realistic outcome I can foresee:

Current full-time roster free agents

Hudler signs for $1.8

Kopecky signs for $575k

Samuelsson is allowed to leave as a UFA

Chelios retires or is allowed to leave as a UFA

Conklin is allowed to leave as a UFA

AHL roster free agents

Leino signs for $1m

Promoted from AHL to NHL full time

Leino, Helm, Ericsson, Howard

Traded for picks or prospects

Filppula, Stuart (has to waive NTC)

This results in a 21-man roster with Meech as the only spare. The Wings would also have about $650k cap space, so Ryno, Ritola or Tardif, or someone else may be added to AHL promotions, or Downey or another cheap vet may get the 13th spot instead of Meech serving double-duty. If Larsson is serving as backup instead of Howard, it's almost enough cap space to add Abdelkader as the 13th forward on the roster (probably on the 3rd or 4th line).

If Stuart doesn't waive his NTC, then it's probably a trade of Kronwall and Hudler for a couple high picks and a top prospect, including at least one or two first rounders. Probably a better return than what Stuart would bring...but in no way would I ever prefer to trade those two instead of just Stuart.

As much as I'd love to keep Hudler for that money, he'll get an offer sheet of 4-5 million or more, and would be nuts to turn it down.

Players do crazy things to stay in the D, but you are probably right. Get something of value for him and part ways. We have guys like Leino and Helm who serve the same purpose.

I'd take Huds over Hossa any day...Huds brings more personality to the team, and with as much talent as we have Hossa could ride the bench and we would still win.

You're joking right? About taking Hudler over Hossa?

They do, but for a young guy like Hudler to turn down his shot at money, I cant see it happening. I'm just glad I'm not as attached to Hudler as I was Lapointe who had the same ordeal.

Ideally with Hudler, I'd hope a s***ty team would give him a decent deal so we could take the draft picks and grab some soon NHL ready talent, but who knows right now.
