bdavis 28 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I was just reminiscing about a time where I actually had a chance to see the Stanley Cup. It was after the Red Wings won the Cup in 97. I remember reading all of the engraved names, from top to bottom (this is when the last ring was nearly filled up). It was a very cool experience. There wasn't many people around at the time. I was allowed to touch it, and have my picture taken with it. Maybe someone on these boards was at the same place at the same time. It was at Civic Arena in St. Clair Shores. Pretty damn cool if you'd ask me. I don't remember exactly who had the Cup that day, but I think it was one of the trainers. That was pretty cool to be around the most coveted trophy, sought after by the most competitive athletes in the world, and just recently hoisted by Steve Yzerman. If it wasn't for Detroit winning that year, I would've never had the chance to see the Cup. What a great memory from a great team. Anyone else have a chance to see it? cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Yes, during my annual visit to the HHOF. And I always stop in the old bank vault there to look at the original bowl and the retired bands from the Cup.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I saw and got a picture with it at the USHL All-Star game two seasons ago. I hit a deer on my way home from work (in order to pick up my wife), drove through one of the worst blizzards of the year, but still made it to the game. Worth every bit of it to actually see it in person!
KrazyGangsta 79 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) I saw it the year the Tampa Bay Lightnings won it. Martin St-Louis brought it to Montreal where they let us touch it and I found the Wings on it which was amazing ... was probably one of the best hockey experiences I had. robb himself 143 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I saw it back in 2002 here in Kelowna BC at a golf course when it was on its way to be with Steve Yzerman! got a couple awesome pictures of it with me and my old man
capsfan25 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 When the team visited the White House in Oct, '08. Probably the most amazing experience of my life.
Vladifan 680 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Ah yes! Saw it once at the Round Rock Express baseball diamond; once at a Sears store on the northwest side of Austin. Didn't even know it was going to be there, and I don't even remember why I was in that area. What's weird (and wondrous) is that I never go to that specific area. Except that once. Thank you, hockey gods!
Miss Wing Queen 154 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 After the parade in '08, I happened to be making my way to Comerica Park to meet some friends and stopped into Cheli's to see Ozzie standing on the bar with the cup, along with some of the other guys (Cheli, Downey, Quincey, Lebda, Meech, Howard). Luck was definitely on my side because I was able to make my way through the packed crowd and to the bar where I was able to hoist myself up to drink out of it. Best damn beer I've ever drank in my life! Although a good portion spilled on me too. Thankfully this was before the cup was taken away to be repaired, at which point the place cleared out pretty much. I met up with my friends and watched Howie play bartender for awhile. One of the best days of my life.
Jocke 53 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Yes in the HHOF like 8 years ago. I actually pushed it a little bit to the side as I slightly leaned against it. Scared me a little
Learn2LuvIt 252 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I was very fortunate and was able to drink out of the cup in 2008. I was down at Cheli's (not at the famous Wing party after the parade), but actually before the parade day. Cheli and Ozzie were gracious enough to allow me the honor to hang with them, hold the cup, and have a brewskie out of the cup. I had met them both before, but this was going above and beyond as I didn't ask them, they offered. Freakin awesome!!
elriqo28 2 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 unfortunately both times I've seen it, was when another team had won. Last year, I was on the ice during the penguins celebration. (I work with a tv station in MI) The other time was up at Ferris when Kunitz brought it after winning with the Ducks. I got a picture with it then since I am a Ferris grad. cjm502 165 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I guess I saw it at the HHOF when I was on a hockey tournament. Someone told me that the cup on display was not the real one, but I guess they were wrong.
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 Matt Cullen brought the Cup to Fargo-Moorhead (he's from Moorhead, but we're twin cities) after the Canes won it, but I didn't go. I figured that I only wanted to see it in the hands of a Wing. I regretted that afterwards when I realized that the only way I'd see the Cup was to go to MI or the HHOF. Stupid move by me. edicius 3,269 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I've never seen it...but hey, the Devils are pretty good this season, so I might luck out.
Krystal 41 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 I saw it and got pictures with it here in Kansas City down on the Plaza... but I refused to touch it. I didn't wanna give the Wings bad mojo... we were headed into the '02 post-season Now I'm convinced if I'd have touched the cup we'd have lost.
cupforwings 138 Report post Posted January 18, 2010 i saw it in 2008 when Homer had it. He put it in his front yard so all the neighbors could get pictures with it. He let us pick it up and everything. Reading the names was easily the coolest part. The history it has is unbelievable.
