He is getting old and didnt even play last year, but I guess if he performs well and earns a spot there is nothing wrong with that.

How can anyone not love this one?
What a game. I hated seeing the captain go down like that though, scary stuff.
I wonder if the tryout is just to provide a little extra pressure for some of the other guys competing for a spot.

It's times like this that I wish Franzen knew how to fight so we could kill this conversation for good. Holland wants to add a 40 year old first-ballot hall of famer in a 3rd line scoring role for around a million bucks and people get all up in arms ("we're hindering the development of our kids!!" etc). Now a 35 year old washed up scrapper gets a tryout and people get excited. Downey's an awesome guy and he deserves to play hockey somewhere, but it's not worth the roster spot for him to be a pylon and take on the other team's goon once every 4 games. If you're going to pick a vet as your 13th forward, why not go with Maltby?

Stick him in GR on a 2way deal just incase we get the injury bug on the team again. Other than than he's got no business being on this team.

That game forever cemented Downey and Babcock as Red Wing heros.

Purely for competition, I don't see him getting signed and would be shocked if he was offered a contract.

he said this on OTR. he mentioned that he took a year off to train, and Kenny had told him to come to camp. Hope the best for him, loved watching all his over energized shifts.

if Downs has been trg for a year to beef up and get fitter then Ken should give him a chance to show him what hes still got. 2 way contract would be ideal, he did a good job with the Griffs in 08-09 he could look after the kids and come up when needed.
