8 Legged RedWing 367 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 God damnit that game was painful to watch. I don't know what the hell is wrong wrong with the effort but it just looked like they didn't care for over half the game. If these players out are good enough to go in the playoffs, I say put them in now... this team looks lost without Datsyuk.
chrisdetroit 189 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 What happened in October and November only matters when it comes to records. The point was that the team is playing average for a very long time. That's not a great sign going into the playoffs. And before you mention 2008 or 2002 or some other dumb random fact, we don't have Hasek, Osgood or a team with 10 Hall of Famers going into these playoffs. We just look flat right now heading into the postseason. The Wings have also shown us repeatedly that when the big games come, they can turn on the switch. This happens every March. As far as right now, we are resting guys and the guys that played tonight looked good. We lost 2-1 to a very good Vancouver team even when resting Dats, Franzen and Bert and Howard looked very good. Zetterberg may be putting up tons of assists this year, but Datsyuk has far surpassed him as a player. He's much more dynamic game to game and can take over games at any point. This has been his best season, despite the injuries.

We just look flat right now heading into the postseason. And what happens in April, May and June should be all we are concerned about when it comes to this team. All that matters is that this team plays good at the right time of the year and that starts 8 games from now. You would be a fool to think that this group of guys don't know what it takes to win 3 weeks from now.

Patience grasshopper The Pens game was a big game. Based on that reasoning, they would have shown up in the first period. They didn't. Last year in the playoffs, they looked bored in that Phoenix series, and dragged it 7 games. They did show up in game 7, but we know what happened against San Jose. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens again this year. There's other teams right now who look a lot more hungry and willing to win the Cup. This team doesn't, probably because they've already won several. The desperation isn't there, and unlike dynasties of the past (like say the Islanders, Oilers), they can't just win on talent and being much more stacked than anyone else. In today's NHL, with rosters being better balanced around the league, work ethic is more important than ever.
atodaso 279 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 Some people won't admit Howard has been subpar this year either. yeah, it's the old "but he's leading the league in wins" routine 1 Rick D reacted to this
aMonster 96 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 these statistics are not random. the wings played great hockey in october and november and since then they have been rather mediocre. some people just can't see it or won't accept it. I tend to agree, Detroit has been guilty of simply skating towards the end of the season the past two years. They are certainly good enough that they can get away with this as long as they are healthy going into the playoffs. Not to take away from the Canucks, they are a great team and tough to beat for everyone this season but, the Wings have to pick it up and now! 1 Rick D reacted to this

egroen 384 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 yeah, it's the old "but he's leading the league in wins" routine No question about it - Howard has sucked this year. Hope we see the regular season from last year Howard in the playoffs. 1 Rick D reacted to this
8 Legged RedWing 367 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 The game against Toronto on Saturday sure isn't going to be much easier. Vancouver has little to play for at this point other then coasting into the playoffs with no more injuries while Toronto will be fighting for their lives. The Wings who look anything but hungry for wins could have another painfully frustrating game on their hands unless some players start eating their Wheaties for breakfast. dragonballgtz 273 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 I think we were outplayed the first two periods. We didn't win a lot of battles and had the one chance and out thing going. Howard still needs to work on his rebound control but at this point I think it is as good as it will get.
wings_fanatic 677 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 I went to the game tonight and I thought the Wings played a really good game considering they were missing Pavs and Mule and Bert. I thought they had a lapse in the 2nd period, but for most the game they played well and gave themselves a chance to win it but Lunogo played great. My only concern tonight was Ericson... I thought he was TERRIBLE and I would like to see Kindl take his place for the time being at least. Another thing I noticed was that when Babs finally put Nick and Rafi together in the 3rd period, the team seemed to pick it up so i truly think they need to stay together. Also, some of you have been talking about how great the Wings were in October in Novemeber when they were healthy... so I was thinking that that tells us that Babs should go back to those lines that he was using since they worked so well. The lines should be then: Zettberg- Datsyuk- Homer Franzen- Filpulla- Bertuzzi Hudler- Modano- Cleary Eaves- Helm- Abs/Miller/Draper Lidstrom- Rafi Kronwall- Stu Salai- Kindl 1 Rick D reacted to this
esteef 2,679 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 Howard was good, Luongo was better. Story of this night, I really liked how Eaves responded after getting run by Torres. He was hitting everything. Agree. Helm, Flip, Cleary and Hudler all looked good tonight. Steady as she goes. esteef

evilzyme 769 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 Went to the game, thought it was fine. Considering the fact that we were missing our key element player... datsyuk... The dude makes this team, his style, plays, and just having him around, he excites everyone. I also got to witness a vancouver fan and detroit fan almost make out after the game... drunk idiots! Everyone needs to calm down.. Detroit is doing what they should be, resting key players for the playoffs... not worrying too much about the finish of the season. They're balancing it out to fix the problems they need to and use these last few games to try and see what works before its too late to try new things without costing big time. Vancouver doesn't understand this philosophy, understandingly this is why they'll never succeed in the playoffs Most Vancouver fan's wouldn't realize this though, probably why they were all running around acting like idiots once they won. Nightfall 871 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 Not very much hockey left. Maybe if you are rooting for the Edmonton Oilers. The Wings are in the playoffs you know. you want some more depressing stats? in the last 51 games: regulation: 17 wins, 18 losses OT: 5 wins, 4 losses SO: 4 wins, 3 losses how about them wings? The Vancouver Canucks could use a fan like you right now. Why don't you go cheer for them? 1 13dangledangle reacted to this

lookalive07 251 Report post Posted March 24, 2011 (edited) Lol, some of you guys crack me up. I was at the game and the entire 1st period, the second half of the 2nd period and probably 90% of the third period we looked pretty damn good, even without Datsyuk, Franzen, and Bertuzzi. That's a good chunk of our depth right there and we still played pretty damn good. Sure we didn't play a full game, but that's to be expected at times. No team plays hard a full 60 minutes, and it sure didn't help that every shot we threw at Luongo was stopped aside from one. Bottom line is, I'm not worried about missing the playoffs because we won't. I'm not worried about being anything shy of a 3 seed, because even if SJ passes us, who cares? As long as we're ahead of Chicago, I'm fine with it. As long as we're a 3 seed or higher, there's a 0% chance we can even play Vancouver again until the Conference Finals. Howard looked good tonight too. The first goal went off Lidstrom's skate, and unless I was seeing things, there should have been a pretty blatant penalty call made on Vancouver right before they scored the GWG. The officiating was pretty bad, as mentioned before and a number of other things I saw, and I don't think we are seeing our full potential right now. This is the team that always turns it on in the playoffs, and when they do, they really have the potential to beat any team they face. Sure they might lose some games near the end of the season, but come on...are we that spoiled that we can't stand to see a couple of late-season losses because we're so used to having a top seed that we can just choose to rest Datsyuk and Zetterberg, and back in the day players like Shanahan, Yzerman, and Fedorov. Seriously, some of you need to walk away from the panic button. Edited March 24, 2011 by lookalive07 2 MidMichSteve and Nightfall reacted to this
