esteef 2,679 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 How anyone still has confidence in Holland is a mystery. Andersson doesnt have the leg up in Europe anymore, and Scotty Bowman is long gone. Holland is now getting exposed for what he is = a guy who got lucky to have Andersson and Bowman calling shots for him.I mean listen to some of the posts on here. "I like this signing.". What? I think the Andersson point is more important than people realize. esteef
Motown4013 350 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Like Ian White, Colaiacovo, or Quincey? Because that's exactly who you did get. Also, since when is being overly aggressive a bad thing. Everybody hated Tootoo until yesterday. Personally, I think some roughneck m*****f***** is exactly what we need. How many times do we have to say, "we need someone to stand up for our stars"? Wizniewski does, which I can't say for any member of our current defense. Aggressive yes- Idiotic, classless and immature NO. Of course I would not prefer White, Q or Cola....Wiz in Columbus is top pair dman, so thats a redundant arguement...like saying..."Well, Instead of Hossa we got Eaves"-Make it a level playing field here. If you like, I can give you an extended list of guys I would have preferred in Detroit who's talents are about the SAME as Wisneiski's....let me know if you would like that. I have never hated TooToo- I was actually in favor of the signing which ( PUSHING THE ECHO BUTTON) why I like the Huskins signing. Big gritty guy, stands up for the team without the trailer trash shenanigans that go along with a toddler like Wiz and what, 5 million cheaper. YES, Yes, please. he isnt going to win the Norris, but he isnt a cheapshot artist with several dirty suspensions under his belt. Character wins.

It's too early to be suspending people, okay? 2 Danielsm and evilzyme reacted to this

Jaymister 71 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 My thought as well. Likely Vandermeer couldn't make it by tonight, but IMO he would have been a better option for the season. If you're talking about Jim Vandermeer, he's already signed with the Canucks.
Danielsm 244 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 I like the signing. I believe there are better options, but clearly someone at head office has convinced Holland otherwise. We need defense, not offense. Huskins is a stay at home dude, we need that.

Character wins. also, in all honesty, Wiz isn't gonna win a Norris either. I was a huge proponent of sign Wiz that off season, but the money he got was too much for Detroit at the time. Plus his immature comments kind of turn me as well. Hey James, you see all these guys signing for top dollar compared to signing for less in Detriot...well who has more Cups, they top dollar guys or the guys who took less? Thanks, you are no longer a son of Michigan in my mind... Well Kent, welcome to Detroit. Stay awhile, you will like it! 1 DSM reacted to this

I'll take the Wiz and his .46 ppg, aggresive playing style, sticking up for his teammates, PP quarterbacking, cannon of a shot, and ability to log HUGE minutes, any day of the week. With or without his on ice attitude. If you know of some Choir Boy who was available two years ago when we needed to begin transitioning for Lidstrom and Stuart's departures that can do all that, then I'll agree that person was the better option. Character wins: Which is why guys like Chris Pronger, Claude Lemieux, Dino Ciccareli, Darren McCarty, Ulf Samuelsson, Chris Chelios, etc. etc. etc. had such miserable careers. Bring Back The Bruise Bros 1,029 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 I don't mind this, but I'm definitely not ecstatic. He's a big guy, but from what I remember of him, he isn't very physical. Typical Kenny signing. If we were gonna pick up an extra defensemen, why didn't we just pick up Vandermeer when he was available?
LeftWinger 4,962 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Yea, why have confidence in Holland? All the playoff appearances, the Stanley Cups as recent as 2008 and the finals in 2009. I mean, geez, he really has lost it. I give up. You win. I think what he is referring to is all the playoffs appearances, the Stanley Cups, the Presidents Trophy's, etc....are all attributed to Scotty Bowman, Haken Andersson and in my opinion Bryan Murray as well. This is the first team that Holland has tried to build by himself and no matter what the circumstances, he is failing at the moment. It goes back to deciding to sign Franzen instead of Hossa (which Bowman would have NEVER done) and it is showing today with his inabilty to land what he needed in the off season and totalling busting a nut with Quincey. Even though Holland has been the GM for a long time, Bowman has always been an advisor and has had a ton of influence on players coming to the team....this is no guarantee, but I have a feeling if Bowman would have been on those plane trips to Ryan Suter and Zach Parise, our chances would have been a lot better of coaxing them to play away from home. Total specualtion, but Scotty always got his man...Holland has yet to do it. We will see what the future brings, but I do believe what Axe said, Holland was made to look a lot better when he had Bowman in his back pocket... A long time ago Haken Andersson used to be the only guy to travel to the remotest area's to find the diamonds like Datsyuk, now, after all of his success, every team has a European scout that goes to Siberia to find these kids. The Red Wings have lost the upper hand in that area. Plus they lost when Scotty left for Chicago... Holland has let this team slowly get worse and worse....it was headed that way with Lidstrom and Stuart, so no that is not the only reason... 1 Dabura reacted to this

Marty Barry 230 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 I'd have to disagree with you there. Kronner offensive, Quincey offensive, Smith sure as hell offensive, White is alittle 2-way, Ericsson is prone to being more offensive but has regressed to defense more the past few seasons. I'd tend to think the majority of our defensemen are offensively minded with the lack of stay-at-home, defensive defensemen. Stuart was our main stay-at-home guy, and we lost him. Quincey IS offensive. Just not because of his offense. 1 Rebound reacted to this
Guest The Axe Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Thank you for expounding, Leftwinger. That's EXACTLY my viewpoint. Hopefully the Wings and Holland will prove us both dead wrong. I don't think so from what I've seen, though.
LeftWinger 4,962 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Regarding Wiz's comments, I agree, Holland has a reputation for offering UFA's less than they could get elsewhere, but when he did it with Bowman here, Bowman guaranteed that UFA that it was a wise choice to come to Detroit. Holland doesn't have that relationship with players, Bowman is, well, Bowman and like him or not, players knew that he was going to bring the best out of them and make them win. I am willing to bet that if Bowman was here 2 years ago, Wiz would have given less money a thought or two if he had Bowman talking to him. I could see something like this happening... Wiz: So if I take less, what guaratee do I have I will be happy? Holland: Well, you have no choice, because Lids is the best ever and nobody will EVER make more or anywhere near him oin this team, I think you all should take after him and play for less wherever you go...what do you think, interested? Wiz: {same question} Bowman: Listen, in a couple of years Lidstrom will be gone, we will need someone like you to help usher in the next dyansty and when Lidstrom leaves, you will be the #2 if not the #1 guy here and when you are awarded with a Stanley Cup, you will see that it is all worth it. Plus with me calling the shots, you will have everything you need. What do you say? Actually if you need to, I can get you paid more than that moron Holland is offering you, you know I still run this place.... Thank you for expounding, Leftwinger. That's EXACTLY my viewpoint. Hopefully the Wings and Holland will prove us both dead wrong. I don't think so from what I've seen, though. No prob! I have always been on the fence of Holland...he makes some good moves and some s***ey moves. But basically his Stanley Cups are from team built by Murray and Bowman... Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Well, at least he's big and Canadian and has played for the Ducks and Sharks so he can't be that soft. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Holland hasnt hit a homer since Hossa. If memory serves, that fell in his lap. Hossa's agent called him. Holland thought they had no shot before that. I don't know much about Huskins. Seems like a decent price for what's basically a plug. Obviously the injuries aren't Holland's fault. I don't blame him for that. But going into the season for the Wings to have even a halfway decent defense it required a lot of players stepping up and playing at a higher level than they have. Kronwall, Ericsson, Smith, Quincey. And that's with everyone healthy. Take one or two guys out and it gets real ugly real fast. That's where we are now, two games into the season. Overall that is on Holland. I don't think he sucks but as I've said before, because the Wings have been so good for so long and transitioned through different eras so successfully, I'm surprised at how unprepared this team looks for Lidstrom's retirement. GoalieManPat 1,007 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Dont mind the signing. 5-6 dman replacing an injured 5-6 dman. I hope it doesnt effect Lashoff getting more time. frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 The Wings at that time simple didn't have enough free caproom to sign him. Dabura 12,207 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Holland has let this team slowly get worse and worse....it was headed that way with Lidstrom and Stuart, so no that is not the only reason... Not an unimportant point right there. We shat the bed against Nashville even with Lidstrom and the generally solid, dependable Stuart. All the more reason to "overprepare" and lasso an all-star and a solid, dependable #3-ish type. Instead of, like, counting on Ericsson to be a beastly #2.
