TANK IT! 2014-2015 Season

I'm not really advocating tanking, but it worked pretty well for Pittsburgh and Chicago. The structure of the league just lends better to a compete rebuild than getting stuck in mediocrity. The Calgary Flames are the perfect example.

The thing about Calgary is that while the team was declining, they had a very shallow prospect pool, so it all just kind of snowballed until they finally decided to embrace a rebuild. Wings don't have that issue. We have a very deep prospect pool, so while having a terrible year and a lottery pick would no doubt give the team a shot at getting a great, young talent (not a guarantee), with the depth in the farm it isn't necessary. The kids just need to get the experience and learn how to win at the NHL level. Just takes time. And once they get there, Holland has plenty of assets to make the moves that need to be made. All tanking a season would do is get a high draft pick that may or may not pan out.

There a difference between tanking, and being bad. Pittsburgh and Chicago were bad. We're not a bad hockey team, we're just not a great hockey team. And we're not going to tank the season so I don't know why this is even a discussion.

The good thing is, given this teams defense tanking might come without trying :-) Am I fan of tanking ? No, but it is better than being trapped in mediocrity and turning into another Leafs, Flames - at least they are going to be fun to watch! - , Canucks example. You can't hang on to an average core too long or else things are going to go downhill..

Whatever this season brings, changes will come after it. Hollands and Babcocks contract are over after this year, Babs will look for greener places..Holland likely to move up. I've just read that Bruins fans are unhappy with Chiarelli, let's hope Jacobs is too and bring him in. It's so damn annoying 4 years ago we've had the chance to name Y GM :(

No you're right, Oates was the probably the all time worst.

I was only 3 at the time, so the other ones just pissed me off more :P.

Egads, I'm not going to reveal how old *I* was at the time of the Oates trade. :)

The Oates trade was definitely worse.

Don't forget Adam Graves, Klima and Sharples for Jimmy Carson.

The Wings don't have a great track record when it comes to trading guys named Adam.

Don't forget Kevin McClelland. He came along with Carson. What a bargain!

It just goes to show with trades that you just never know. Jimmy Carson was a proven commodity. He was a three time (or close to it) 50 goal scorer and he was still in his early 20's. For whatever, reason, be it the hometown pressure or what not, he could never recapture his scoring touch. The Wings liked Adam Graves and didn't want to part with him, but he was a young grinder with the Wings at the time and Carson was a budding superstar. I don't know of many who wouldn't have made that trade.

The Oates thing was entirely different. I heard an interview with Jacques Demers after he had left Detroit. Want to say it was with Mitch Albom when he was still doing the sports show on Sunday Nights. In any event, a law enforcement official contacted the Wings and told them Oates' name was listed in some kind of "black book" of a prominent drug dealer. With all the Probert stuff going down, the Wings freaked out and quickly dumped Oates for whatever they could get. Turned out to be a bogus report, but it wasn't purely a hockey move.

Ken holland is trying to tank. Resigning Quincey and cleary soon Alfie. It quite clear his goal is to NOT win.

Going a little far here. I'm as irritated as the next guy, and probably more than most. But rather than "tank it" how about we just give open spots to deserving kids and see what they can do? Seemed to work out well last year. I don't know about anybody else but I'd love to add a 6'4 200+ lb Mantha, and a 6'4 200+ lb Sproul to our lineup. As long as he doesn't trade anything valuable away and/or sign some washed up old guy (Alfie) we could very well see

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Mantha

Franzen-Weiss-Nyquist

Jurco-Sheahan-Tatar

Abby-Helm-Miller

Kronwall-Ericsson

Smith-Dekeyser

Quincey-Sproul

Probably won't compete for a Cup, maybe won't make the playoffs even. But maybe, just maybe, we get a little bigger, a little faster, a little bit more hungry, and a little harder to play against.

Babcock would never put a rookie on the top line with Z and D so your lineups are already unrealistic.

Face it, while I don't want them to tank a season, this roster is going exactly nowhere. Holland is literally wasting the end segment of Z and D's careers with marginal teams with little imaginaion, youth, or energy.

We will NEVER tank EVER! This team will ALWAYS make the playoffs...cause Red Wings always find a way (with Cleary and Kindl and all).

And find a way to get eliminated in the 1st round again. In the west that's not acceptable but somewhat expected. IN the East that is absolutely dreadful and depressing.

It's way too early to judge anything. I don't believe the Red Wings are a championship contender by any stretch, but they are nowhere near bad enough to tank.

Three games in and the Wings have played all one-goal games against two teams that are probably among the five best in hockey. Besides tonight, the first two games were really strong efforts and showed many areas to be positive about as a fan. The second time against the Bruins went poorly, though that was a determined team hungry to win a game after a poor start.

So I guess overall, I don't think anybody really knows what we have yet with the Wings. There are certainly some worrisome signs. However, there is also plenty to look forward to as the season progresses.

Its says a lot about a reactionary topic when degraa55 is the voice of reason.

Yes it's great being a realist and using facts.

Fact is it's three games into an 82 game season and our best player is out!

I'm officially calling for a 2015 TANK job. I think we can all agree, there is absolutely NOTHING to amp us up and get excited about in the upcoming season. Literally, NOTHING.
Instead of praying for another 8th seed finishing of limping into the playoffs and getting decimated in the 1st round, I would much rather hope for an absolute tank and hopefully get a top 3 draft pick. Not only will this give us all something to get excited for, but it might also spark some much needed change in the organization's management.
Who's with me? #Tankit2014

I've forwarded this to Kenny and I am waiting for his response. Seems like a pretty logical thing to do, three games into this season.

the only thing I would seriously tank is most of our D and a couple of fwds. If we want a retool, lets do it. Whoever we cannot trade, waive.

Gone: Franzen, Cleary, Ericsson, Quincey, Kindl and Howard. Weiss as well since he seems like he can't get a break. I know, there are NTC's, but this is just my retool. Replace them with kids and I bet the streak still remains intact. Those guys bring nothing to this team that our kids won't bring...except they will bring less enthusiasm than the kids.
