If you hadn't already figured it out, Lil Bert is here to stay. He is now a permanent part of the REBUILD.

St. James also tweets that the Red Wings have decided not to send forward Tyler Bertuzzi to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL for their playoff run. They believe Bertuzzi has done enough at the AHL level and want him to hit the gym and get stronger with a full offseason of workouts.

Why wasn't this being done before?

I’m sure it was; now it’s just a little longer of a summer workout. It just says that management views a longer summer in the gym as more beneficial to him/the team than getting him some more minor league hockey experience. I can agree with that.

Makes me wonder who he is going to get rid of then. Because there ain't no room for 4-5 NEW young players. 2 will fit for sure, but damn, it would be nice to make room for and see 4-5 new youngsters!

Draft Dahlin, dump some scrubs, sign JT, sign Karlsson next season!

Game on!

If he's saying 2-5 new guys, I would have to think that the guys out the door/coming in would be:

Booth out, Svech In

XO out, Hicketts In

Jensen out, ideally Dahlin in,

I could see us moving one of Helm or Glendening in the off-season and bringing in Ras

Nyquist (at deadline), bringing in Turgeon.

That's my guess.

What I want to see on this team is either young kids with upside, or vets who can help the young kids with upside. What I dont want to see is a ton of vets, or kids who have peaked and are nothing special.

Vets I would love to move are Howard, Nyquist (at TDL), E, Nielsen, Kronwall (LTIR) and Helm

Vets I would be ok keeping would be Abby, Z, Glendening, DD, Daley (though I would move any not named Z if a great offer came in).

Kids I would like to keep are Bertuzzi, Mantha, AA, Larkin, Frk,

Kids I would move because they are likely not getting much better are Jensen and XO.

I think way too much of what happens this offseason is going to depend on the draft lottery. If we get one of the top 2 picks, we'll have to make room for one of Dahlin or Svechnikov. Anyone else would likely be a year away from making the team anyway.

I would assume the "2-5 young players" are Svechnikov and Hicketts guaranteed to start the season in Detroit, Rasmussen will be given every opportunity to make the team, Cholowski will have an outside chance, but will likely start the season in Grand Rapids, and Hronek and Turgeon will get a(nother) look at some point next season.

I see Svechnikov as Tatar's replacement, and Hicketts as Ouellet's replacement. I'm hoping we move Nielsen (doubtful) and insert Rasmussen into the 3rd line center slot. Cholowski should probably play a full season in Grand Rapids before getting the call. Hronek should be up by the trade deadline, when we hopefully trade one of Ericsson or Daley, or in Kronwall's place if he spends any time on IR. Turgeon should also be up by the deadline, when we hopefully trade one of Helm or Glendening.

I don't think Athanasiou will be moved this summer, but it wouldn't really surprise me if he were. I'm okay with it, as long as it's for a good return (young, high end defenseman). Nyquist should be moved at next year's deadline, and if he has a bounce back season (I think he will), he'll net a very good return. I'm okay with Witkowski serving as the extra forward / defenseman, and I'd be open to bringing Booth back again in the same role. We need 2-3 guys sitting in the press box every night, and I'd much prefer it be these guys than a Svechnikov, Turgeon, Hicketts or Hronek.

Abdelkader and DeKeyser aren't going anywhere. I wouldn't care too much if we traded Jensen, but I like him as a bottom pairing defenseman. I think he's more valuable to the team, even as a 6th/7th defenseman than he would be in any trade. It will be interesting to see what happens with Green as well. Part of me wants to bring him back short term to help the kids and give us another trade chip, but I'm also worried the surgery could affect his game, and prevent any potential return.

It's going to be a very interesting offseason. I just can't wait for the draft lottery on the 28th...

well while we are still in stun mode after Kennys remarks that its now a re-build !! ill join in with my version of what id like to do which is possible to do as well, no dream realm trades and signings.

for the purpose of this im going to say we draft at 6 as we sit now, were not getting Dahlin folks. Evan Bouchard is the guy im thinking we'll take so thats my choice.

NM Howard  and Hutton from St Louis ufa, im afraid big Jared doesn't cut it for me.

On D I'd let Green walk, Kenny will offer him a contract, but i feel we need to move on. DDK and Ericsson are here to stay, not even Houdini could get out of their contracts, Daley and hopefully a fitter Kronwall will be too to bring that vet leadership Kenny craves. With that in mind id carry 8 D and rotate the younger guys with the vets during pre-season with XO and Jensen traded or waived, to make room for the new players. So who gets to come up? Im all in on getting Hronek up next year, and think he would adjust quickly, is Cholowski ready? I hear differing reports so maybe a year in GR would suit him better. Hicketts did well in his little cameo and id like to see him given a longer stint see iif he can physically keep up with the long haul of a 82 game season. Bouchard (if we get him) has the reports from scouts and those in the know that he could step straight up, wether Kenny will go with that is another matter, but ill put him in and have him paired with one of the vets. My final choice would be the Czech kid from the Liiga league, Sulak. he finished second overall in PPG for D men, behind the 3rd overall pick from last years draft, Miro Heiskanen. Hes a big mobile D , who i thought looked good in his pre season games for the Wings last year, so he would round off my 8 D with 1 being sent down at seasons start.

So D would look like DeKeyser Ericsson,  Daley Bouchard , Sulak Hronek and Kronwall Hicketts.

The forward situation is even more congested, with shall we say, not very helpful contracts.

Zetterberg, Nielsen, Nyquist, Abdelkader, Helm are staying unless Kenny finds a trade partner. doubtful.

On the potential players out, Booth is retiring i hear, will Frk get offered a deal, and will Kenny cut ties with AA and offer him up in a trade? Will he be calling Babs to see if he wants his boy Glendening ? My scenario is that all 4 have been let go or dealt. Im not listing any players in bound in any deals, lets just say we got picks for them that did get dealt.

This leaves us with Bertuzzi, Witkowski, Larkin, Mantha to go with the 5 above.

So in theory 4 forward spots up for grabs. Svechnikov played well enough to get one and id be really surprised and a bit miffed if Rasmussen didnt get one as well. Ive got a strong hunch that Pope will get a roster spot next year which leaves us with one spot to fill,so do we go safe with Turgeon or do we go with the defensive specialist C from the SHL in Ehn? Maybe a curve ball and Kenny gives Tangradi a spot for a year to help look after the kids with Witkowski, who knows eh? So here's my 13 forwards for next year .

Mantha Larkin Svechnikov

Bertuzzi Zetterberg Nyqvist

Pope Nielsen Rasmussen

Abdelkader Turgeon Helm

Witkowski.

I doubt very much well see that many roster changes , as 8 is probably too big a turnover but it is feasible.

Andy, you had me until you cut ties with AA. Especially just for a draft pick.

The only way I trade AA is if he is a booger again and is difficult at signing. Then I trade him for full value, it must be an NHL asset coming back. This kid is dynamite, on a top line somewhere, he'll blow the NHL away.

AA needs to make some serious improvements to his game if he is going to blow the NHL away. He does have a ton of talent and speed but I think he lacks the IQ, vision, an work ethic to get to the next level. He’s still young and has time to improve his game but I don’t know if he’ll ever be elite. Maybe he would look elite on a line with two elite players.

Rasmussen having a solid playoff :D I can’t wait to see how far he’s come next training camp/preseason.

Since Ras plays in my area and I've gotten to watch him a few times, I posted earlier this season that I thought the kid really had the potential to be a beastly dominant player but the points weren't showing that. He really knows how to use his size and reach to his advantage. I didn't know why the points weren't coming in even stronger for him, but I guess now we can probably chalk it up to his injury and him most likely rehabbing it and looking out for his health all season.

Now that he's in the playoffs he's absolutely flipped the switch and gone full Franzen-postseason beast mode. Super happy for him, I knew he could turn it on. He may really be on this team next year.

Hopefully he shows he’s ready next year! Doesn’t look like he can progress much further in juniors and I believe he’ll still be too young for the AHL.

Do his stats really allow him to a booger during the signing period?

Oh yeah, too young for the AHL. Maybe that gives him an even better shot at making the team?

It’s possible I suppose? I think if he’s close/on the bubble they’ll at least give him the amount of NHL games that he can play without burning a year of his ELC (9 I think?) then at that point, decide if going back to juniors or staying in the NHL would be more beneficial to his long term development.

You have a list of user names that rival the amount of entries in the Dictionary, most of them made for one reason, to come in here and jump on me...I hardly think I am the stalker. But please continue to keep getting banned to only come back as a new one, the names are getting interesting. RightWeiner was a good one!

Actually Lefty, I think you should be flattered. For someone to go to that much trouble just to punk you is kind of a compliment in itself, wouldn't you say?

BTW, why is this website trying to get me to date Arab women?

Hmm, so maybe I'm wrong and the team will in fact look pretty different next season. Of course, as far as I know, Holland didn't specify when the team might be expected to hit that hypothetical "4-5" mark (opening night? Mid-season injury fill-ins? Post-trade deadline call-ups?) or if "4-5" even means four or five guys *all on the roster at the same time, all holding down regular spots at the same time*.

In any case, here's the exact quote (I assume):

“At the end of the day, I’m hoping and expecting that a minimum of two and maybe four or five kids between the age of nineteen and twenty-two are on the roster next year that weren’t on the team to start this year,” Holland said.

(Wingsnation)

I'm guessing the minimum two are Svechikov and Hicketts. They're pretty safe bets for the opening night roster and full-time duty.

I'm guessing the other candidates -- for opening night or some point later in the season -- are Rasmussen, Dahlin/A. Svechnikov/Tkachuk/Zadina, Turgeon, Hronek, Cholowski. Is David Pope done with school? Another possibility is a good young player that we get in a trade, e.g. Kasperi Kapanen, Haydn Fleury.
