I agree that Suter is best-fit as 3C on a playoff team. Copp may be better but I ain't paying him 5-6M per. Neither will Yzerman. Not at this stage of the rebuild. He's at least 2 years away from big money long-term UFA deals IMO.

Same goes for Campbell. Someone's going to overpay for the next Grubauer there and it won't be Ydude.

There will be no paying 7-8M x 7 for Lindholm either. Just so you know I'm not totally picking on you.

This is because Seider's and Raymond's ELC expire in 2 seasons after this? And we want to lock them up before we go shopping?

I understand wanting to be cash fluid until then. I just don't think these move stop that at all.

We're shedding something like 25-30 million this offseason, with 10 million already in the bank. Shedding Dekeyser's contract and Nielsen's buyout alone probably pays for Copp and Campbell in itself. Or at least almost all of it.

The books will be wide open this summer and I'd like to see some meaningful steps taken towards progress. I think the time for fillers like Marc Staal's, Bobby Ryan's, and Pius Suter's is closing on us. Not like I'm advocating for a Tavares signing or something.

I do want to avoid significant term. If Andrew Copp wants a 7 year then yeah, lets pass.

Copp and Campbell are mostly on my mind because of the Michigan connection. I think it will still be semi hard to lure UFA's in here. Not comparable talent wise, but SY got Merill and Oesterle in here with the MI connection. It's one of the few advantages on the market we can press as the Wings.

not at this stage?  this is the ONLY stage where we CAN pay big money.

We currently have 9 forwards, 4 defenseman, and 1 goalie tied up for 2022-23 at 41 mil.  Add Fabbri, Berggren, Soderblom, Pearson, and Hirose.  48 mil.  Add Edvinsson, Johansson, McIsaac, Lindholm.  60 mil.

Still lots of room for Seider, Raymond, Larkin raises.

Eff this.

The boring old porridge days of "come to Meijer and meet hometown heroes Luke Glendenning and Justin Abdlekader" are OVER. Copp is Abby 2.0

This team's getting back to it's sleek Eurosex roots. If I were Larkin I'd be very nervous.....Ned can stay.

If, like you say, there will still be lots of room for Seider, Larkin, Raymond raises when the time comes then there will be enough money to sign a big UFA or 2 then as well.

Look an Vancouver. They get a sniff with Hughes and Petterson and then blow their wad on bad contracts.

Being patient as a GM means being really patient. Hang on to your money for now Stevie.

I really have zero care if players are from Michigan or not. I just see it as an advantage on the market we can press.

We won't be getting quality players much younger than Copp on the open market. The alternative is signing vets to shorter cheaper deals. I'm more interested in adding younger guys the team can grow with, but I guess this is an option if we really want to keep this team lowkey for 2 more years. Pavelski? Jeff Carter? Stastny?

Respect your opinion, but I respectfully disagree.  I think Lindholm makes really good sense to this team this offseason, while I don't see a lot of others on the UFA board who do.  I don't think we're going to be able to offer him the money that would break him away from Anaheim, but I hope we at least kick a tire or two.

Depth after this season:

LW --------------- C --------------- RW
Bertuzzi ------- Larkin ------------ Raymond
Vrana --------- Suter -------------- Zadina
Erne ---------- Rasmussen ------ Berggren
Smith --------- Veleno
                      Stephens
                      Pearson

LHD ----------------- RHD
Edvinsson --------- Seider
Oesterle ----------- Hronek
                             Lindstrom

G
Nedeljkovic

I listed all forwards at their natural position. Ed, Berggren, and Pearson are the only prospects I expect to be possibly ready for the NHL as early as next year. But I think we should definitely create a situation where Berggren is forced to start in the AHL again unless he truly earns it.

We have quite the log jam at the Center position. I'm starting to think it's best we don't sign anyone at Center and instead bide our time with Suter/Ras/Veleno for the 2C spot. If anything we should probably focus on signing another RH forward/winger to push Smith and Berggren down and out of the starting lineup, with our extra centers filling in wing spots.

Definitely need one or two LHD again, hopefully at least 1 then can play in the top4.

Need backup for NEd.

At RH forward:

  • Filip Forsberg  -  Swedish
  • Evan Rodrigues
  • Ryan Strome
  • Vincent Trochek  -  played with Nedeljkovic + has lived in Michigan
  • Rickard Rakell  -  played with Nedeljkovic + Swedish + has lived in Michigan
  • Bryan Rust  -  from Michigan
  • Vinne Hinostroza  -  played with Oesterle and Suter

All 7 can also play center and are under 30 years old.

At LHD:

  • Hampus Lindholm  -  Swedish
  • Nikita Zadorov  -  played with Suter

Not a lot of great options out there that aren't old or not significant upgrades from DK and Staal.

At Goalie:

  • Jack Campbell  -  from Michigan
  • Scott Wedgewood - played with Stephens + has lived in Michigan
  • Ville Husso
  • Vitek Vanecek - played with Vrana
  • Joren van Pottelberghe - drafted by the Wings in 2015

May be less important to get a young guy here if Ned is the solidified #1.

Adding Lindholm and Forsberg would be super interesting and wouldn't break us financially....

These are the 2 ufas that instantly make us better.  I would be jacked.

Lindholms contract is affordable now, but wont be in 4 or 5 years when Hronek, Seider, and Ed are off RFA status and will be looking for big contracts. Lindholm's contract would be an anchor at that point.

Not winning 2 cups before Raymond, Seider, Edvinsson, and Cossa hit their primes. The big contracts will come before that.

If we add Forsberg, Lindholm, Vrana, Edvinsson, Berggren, Sebrango, and McIsasc after we subtract Leddy, Dekeyser, Stahl, Stecher, Namestnikov, Rowney, and Stephens, we will be A LOT better than u think.  We are .500 right now, dude.  Now's the time to add a couple big ticket UFA's and compete. Not when we have to blow thr team up because 5 guys want 10 million a year each.  Just my $.02.  Dont know why you'd jave an objection to Yzerman using the available cap space on 2 damn good players instead of 7 mediocre ones.

I'm down for Lindholm if we could get him for like 6 mil per. A good season this season puts Detroit back on the map as a destination as a young, upcoming team that'll be good for years. Maybe he'll wanna join the Swedish mafia.

Then throw the bank at Malkin for 2 years and have a fun little playoff run next season.

Bert-Larkikn-Raymond

Vrana-Malkin-Zadina

Berggeren-Suter/Veleno-Fabbri

Pearson-Ras-Erne

Smith

Seider-Lindholm

Hronek-Edvonsson

Staal-Lindstrom

Oesterle

Ned

UFA signing

I just assume guys like Malkin, Giroux, and Bergeron aren't going anywhere.

I'd actually rather throw money at Zadorov than Lindholm I think. Lindholm is probably going to get like $6.5+ with big term on the open market due to his age, ability, and lack of anyone similar in UFA. He can reminds me of Sami Vatanen too... will get a big payday and then folks will realize he's a low tier top pairing guy, but will be locked into that big contract.

I don't expect Zadorov to get massive term or extreme overpayment. You know what you're getting with him. Massive violent shutdown Dman who can barely dangle a puck side to side. But that basically fits our needs. We have Edvinsson, Seider, and Hronek to move the puck... with more similar prospects on the way. We need to replace our defensive Dmen in Staal and DK.

Great hype video:

That's going to bring a lot of confidence and protection to our young Dmen. Probably can be had for $4-4.5 for 2-4 years.

We have the young NA captain. We have the Swedes. This rebuild needs a violent Russian Dman.

Bertuzzi - Larkin - Raymond
Vrana - Suter - Hinostroza ($2x2)
Erne - Veleno - Zadina
Pearson - Rasmussen - Stephens
Smith/Berggren

Edvinsson - Seider
Zadorov ($4x3)- Hronek
Oesterle - Lindstrom
McIsaac/Sebrango

Ned
van Pottelberghe ($1x1)

I don't disagree at all. But as I said, I'd only do Lindholm at 6 mil per tops. Unlikely anyway.

As for Malkin, I can see him following the big payday to wind down his career. It'll never happen, but it would be cool if it did.

Malkin + a legit top 4 dmen = instant playoff experience for the kids, and likely some playoff success.

This off season will be one of the first ones to where I am not too worried about signing any bigger name UFA's. I am ok with addressing within ( I still think Leddy will be re-signed) along with Fabbri. I think even Namestnikov will re-sign. I am sure Yzerman will look to fill in with NHL players like he did this year, but I really don't see any bigger names.  But know this, if not in 2022, then in 2023 those bigger names might be calling Yzerman instead of the other way around. Other players around the league are taking notice of the progress this team is making.

I know we want the draft picks, but I think the team is better with Fabbri, and Namestnikov in the bottom six.

Rasmusen should be 4c Smith is a good 12/13 f. imo one of Fabbri/Namesnikov should be traded at the deadline resign the other.

Fabbri is going nowhere, for better or worse he’s part of the leadership group. Also, can’t keep letting go of Larkin’s buddies without eventually making him want to leave too.

i agree with this.  Fabbri is a great team guy at 3 mil per.  Can play anywhere in the top 12 and not look out of place.  Thats big while we only have 3 legit top 9 wingers in Zadina, Raymond, and Bertuzzi.  If Berggren, Soderblom, and Veleno round out into top 9 guys, then Fabbri will become a bit more expendable.  But right now, he's a key piece.

I agree with this.  He had a TERRIBLE game against Sea, but he has generally looked like a great Glendening replacement this year.  Im 100% fine with him as our 4C for the next 10 years.  If he works his ass off and becomes a shutdown center that kills pks like a boss, Big Ras will be good Red Wing worth the 9oa pick.

I believe they should trade Rasmussen. He just isn't working here. He could go somewhere, get MORE icetime and be better. Get what we can for him, and move on. If he continues to under-achieve then that's on him, if he becomes what he was drafted to be, then so be it. I just don't think he's fitting too well in his role here.
