Yes he was, According to Ansar Khan he was offered a two way deal. Basically meaning back to Grand Rapids. And you might get a call-up if we get a rash of injuries.

If jv's in Grand rapids, who's centering the fourth line?

These players now have a higher NHL caphit than Veleno does:

Alex Lyon
Sebastian Cossa
Eemil Viro
Antti Tuomisto
Simon Edvinsson
William Wallinder
Amadeus Lombardi
Taro Hirose
Cross Hanas
Alexandre Doucet
Elmer Soderblom
Carter Mazur
Nate Danielson
Marco Kasper

14/19 of those players have never even set foot on NHL ice lmao

I see waivers in Velenos future

There had to be an "Im sorry, Mr Yzerman" that took place today.  This contract is WAY TOO LOW.

He'll stay make more actual dollars than these guys, unless Lyon, Kasper, Eddogg, or Soderblom make the team straight out the gate and stay.

Ah yes, you overheard this when Khan was on the Tampa bench discussing with Bolts prospect Kevin Bicker?

I still hope Yzerman eventually packages Veleno and Fabbri (?) For a more needed forward.

Just out of curiosity, what player do you think that package would fetch? Because there aren't too many decent forwards to be had for a mediocre 4th line center and a guy who can't stay on the ice.

I like what they've done with Veleno here. It's a true "show me" contract. If he gets outplayed by Christian Fischer this season then he's gone and we don't have to think about him again. But if he has a breakout (relative to expectations), and I kinda think he might, then everything's gravy.

I like him at a mil a season.

I do too. I'm not mad at the deal, and I like the flexibility. I also think that it's not out of the realm of possibility that he has 15 goal, 30 point upside from the 4th line with good defensive metrics. IF he gets there, and SY can take full advantage of Veleno's RFA years, then he might even become a real asset for the team. He has a lot to prove this year and his career with the Red Wings is more or less riding on it but I definitely think he's got a good shot at getting there.

I'm not mad about the deal at all. Hopefully he works out. Being used to Yzerman, this has trade written all over it. You're right though, not much out there to get for those two. I'm hoping we're in the playoffs come TDL and we then try to upgrade the middle 6.

Could you imagine the contract Holland would've given him?

It's a great contract, and to be honest he's probably marginally underpaid. Veleno's defensive metrics grade our really well (amongst the best on the team) and his offense is mediocre for his ice time. He's probably worth more than league minimum, but he has zero leverage and it's a buyers market for NHL GMs right now so he had to take what he could get. Smart on his part to do a one year deal though, as he should be in line for a nice little raise if his offense improves even a little bit (the  aforementioned 15 goal, 30 pt. season I referenced above).

As far as Holland goes, his UFA signing at the end of his tenure in Detroit were really bad but I never had a problem with how he handled RFAs. If anything I think he probably could have stood to pay a bit more for RFAs and get them on longer term deals (the way Dave Poile did in Nashville) for guy who were obviously going to make it (Tatar, Nyquist). Otherwise, every bad deal he signed was with a UFA (Nielsen, Ericsson, Dekeyser, Abdelkader, etc.).

Matthews - 4 years, 13.25 mil AVV.

Wow.  That's a lot of cheddar.

I'm more looking at that 4 years. Piggy nose is the kinda player you want locked down on an 8 year. Auston likely limited the team to 4. That tells me he's basically giving the Leafs 4 more years to win a cup, and if they don't, he jets on the open market.

Cya Nylander.

Yup Nylander to the highest bidder. And who's willing to give him $10,000,000+ long term.

Nylander - Larkin - Debrincat

Berggren - Kasper - Raymond

Rasmussen - Copp - Compher

Fabbri - Danielson - Kostin

Mazur/Soderblom

That would look noiccccce next year

Potentially the best forward group in the league.

Nylander is gone, and Marner's going to ask for $13 million a year. The Leafs really only have 1 or 2 years left before the decline. They'll turn into Chicago, without any Cups.

The Nylander situation is interesting. I'm sure a number of teams would trade for him, but with the Leafs over the cap, there's no rush for the other GM's. The longer this goes, Nylander's trade value goes down. The Leafs will be desperate to get under the cap.

I find it funny Dubas took off this off season, before the implosion happens, that he created.

Its really a s*** situion for the league and nhlpa too.  Matthews HAS TO get what he's worth.  If he had signed for 9 mil a season tp make room for others, who did the same in turn, it would just screw over the entire nhlpa.  He's one of the top 3 players in the league, and he should be paid like it.  The cap needs to go up to 100 mil.  Simple as that.  Handcuffing teams with ridiculously low spending limits is absurd.  In the NBA, TWO players exceed the nhl's cap for a 23 man roster.  That's just stupid.

I can't see them trading him. They need him for this years playoff run.
Only way it COULD happen is if someone offers something of equal roster value - not futures. Like if a team offered a Dman and a Winger of slightly lesser value than Nylander. Then the Leafs could keep the piece they prefer next summer and let the other one walk. Mitigating some of the value lost.

I thought we all hated the NBA and didn’t want hockey to be anything like basketball?
