If 10 of my best employees said, hey, we're leaving for 3 weeks, but we expect you to still pay us, you will have to close down your business, we expect you to still pay the 10 other employees that will sit and do nothing while we go, we will all have to work extra hours because of it and it will bring your business absolutely no extra money or exposure.
NHL players are not being paid any extra for the Olympic break so your statement there is just false. They are making the exact same money regardless of it being an Olympic year.
The owners can bugger off about the Olympics. They were more than willing to completely cancel a season and a half worth of revenue in the past 10 years yet would complain about a two week break every four years?
Then why are you here? I DO care about the NHL season and the Red Wings. I don't give a flying f*** about the Olympics. I want the players who are being paid to play here to have their loyalties to the Red Wings. "We" don't owe them anything. Zetterberg has the life and career he has because of the Red Wings, not because of Team Sweden. Let's hope this puts an end to this ridiculous Olympics BS once and for all.
Spoken like someone whos never gotten the shot to represent there country in something. To most athletes (especially those from Europe) representing ones country is the highest honor. Yes even more so than the Stanley Cup. Hank owes nothing to the Red Wings or Red Wings fans. He has the life he has because he worked his ass off not because the Wings gifted him a paycheck. He helped bring a Championship and almost a second to this city when the team was supposed to be in transition. If anything the fans owe him for the joy hes brought them. He's earned the right to put Sweden over the Wings. I dont know what fantasy land your in but the Wings are not contenders this year. Sweden on the other hand was a contender for a Gold Medal. Common sense dictates which one he should go for at the end of a career. Challenging his loyalties because he went and played in the Olympics is just disrespectful for a guy whose battled for over 10 years for the Wings and its fans. Get over yourself.
Z will slowly have to gain back my respect since he dared to try to play in the Olympics - it could have jeopardized his playing time with the Red Wings.
Yes because carrying this team on his injured back the past couple months is not worth your respect.
Z with a back injury......never saw that coming. Cant wait to see everyone blaming the Olympics if he misses extended time. What they fail to realize is Z would have suffered the same injury eventually with the more physical NHL . The guys back is simply shot. Weve known this for a couple years now.
Well, that's the argument, I'm just not sure it really works. Who is watching these games? Non fans that all of a sudden start watching the NHL? Or is it already existing NHL fans? There is also a big difference between games in Vancouver and games in Sochi or other parts of the world.
During the 2010 final you had bars packed with non hockey fans watching the game. Having the games held closer to normal US viewing times helped but who cares were the games are held. The Olympics are for the whole world not just the north american tv audience.
Or Datsyuk and and Kronwall collide at center ice and both get hurt and are out for the regular season. Kiss the playoffs goodbye Wings fans.
They could just as easily get hurt and miss the rest of the season while playing for Detroit as they can for there country. The they could get injured excuse is BS. A player could cut there finger making dinner, get in a wreck on the way to work, etc. Theres always a chance a player could get hurt in there normal lifes. Should owners put all players in a bubble when they are not on the ice for said team to prevent injury?
Bert, Sammy, and Cleary are fine on your list. I wouldn't include Weiss. Sure hes a vet but hes a vet in his prime being only 30. Bert, Sammy, and Cleary are washed up vets on the wrong side of 35. I believe Weiss was a lot more hurt the first half of the season than was let on as he wanted to play and prove himself to a new club. Its worth holding off judgement on him for a while still before you could throw him in with the other 3.
