I want us to win every game and thus, ice the best team possible night in and night out, however, Maltby has been an absolute warrior for us and I think it would be poetic for him to be able to play in one last home opener, followed by a retirement immediately following the game - I would prefer he report to GR and give us a chance to use him as a call up, but you can't blame the guy one bit for not wanting to, especially after the career he had... If I were Bert, I might just wake up tomorrow with "my back being incredibly tight for some reason" What's everyone elses thoughts on this?

    Hawks vs. Avs GDT

I'd love to see the Hawks start the season off 0-2.

Time for a new season, time for the new edition of LetsGoWings.com's schedule desktop wallpapers! I'm still eye deep in development on the new LGW web site (getting close now!), but I wanted to make sure these weren't held up. Keep in mind that the new site will have an all-new file download system and once it's live the links to the different resolution wallpapers will be broken on the forums until I can fix it. Most, if not all, of you will have it already downloaded by then, anyway. This month's featured player is Nicklas Lidstrom. I've also added additional screen resolutions this season, and I'm planning on also offering more once the main site is back up (think: HDTV formats, iPad, etc.). Enjoy! Widescreen: 1920x1200 | 1680x1050 | 1440x900 | 1280x800 4:3 & 5:4: 1600x1200 | 1400x1050 | 1280x960 | 1280x1024 | 1024x768

    Hey, go Avs.

Actually I think that's the majority. His usefulness has just declined over the years and it's come time to let him go. But that's not hate. He's given a lot to the Wings over the years.

malts for sure. I am in the minority that doesn't hate the guy.

Or the "he knows the system the best" call-up. Since he signed a one year contract it wouldn't. The two-way only has to do with how much he's actually getting paid while in the minors, it has no effect any other way. The fact he re-signed with a one year deal means his salary comes off the book. If he signed for more than one year, his cap hit would count against our cap.

    article wasn't funny.

I appreciate everything Maltby has given to the Red Wings, but I want to win. This may sound silly in October, but seriously two points in the Western Conference can be a huge deal in April. Does Bertuzzi make or break the Wings chances of winning tomorrow night? Probably not, but I want to see what that second line can do as soon as possible. If Bertuzzi is healthy enough, he should and will play. I think the sentiment is nice because of Maltby's role and tenure with the Red Wings, but let's remember the goal of this organization is to win. Maltby understands that as much as anyone.

Pens open the new arena with a loss. Boo-hoo.

That's been my understanding too. Also, it only applies is he signed the multi-year deal past 35. If he signed a 15 year deal when he was 25, the cap hit doesn't apply if he retires a few years early.

my understanding is that the only time the 35+ rule applies is if the player signed a multi-year contract. so if draper retired, we would be on the hook for his cap hit still; but with maltby, he only hits the cap when on the detroit roster. hopefully someone can confirm/debunk it.

As it looks like Maltby may be retiring, I would like him to play at least one game this regular season, and then call it quits (and perhaps fill the Verbeek vacancy?).

Let me be the first to say that it's better to have these injuries now than in April.

    Maltby and Meech waived

I know I am in the minority here; but I actually like Malts. I think he brought a little grit and got under players skin. I don't think he was the direct cause of many mistakes or goals (Lebda ahem). Sure, he is getting up in age but I would rather see him retire by complete choice at his own accord when he feels the time is right, not when he is semi-forced into the decision because he didn't make the big club. I think he has things he can teach the young guys in GR. I think his veteran presence and 4 stanley cups speak volumes to kids trying to play harder and harder. Here is to you Malts, hoping you can stick it out for the year. Maybe be part of a Stanley Cup winning organization one last time. Then you can happily retire.

    New Captains

You don't have to be the best player on the team to be a captain, you just have to work hard every shift, and be a leader on and off the ice. Draper for instance was never one of the Wings better players but would make an excellent captain.

    New Captains

You don't have to be the best player on the team to be a good leader and therefore good captain.

I hear serious Moore talk every time Bertuzzi does anything of note, whether it be physical or scoring a nice shootout goal.
