    Controversy in Pittsburgh

How are you not Sidney Crosby's public relations director? Seriously. Firstly, there is no grey area in this instance with the Intent to Blow the Whistle rule, which I do hate by the way. However, the referee blew the whistle when he lost sight of the puck and before the puck crossed the line. That should not have been ruled a goal, no questions asked. I don't like the intent to blow the whistle rule and I hate not stopping play unless the puck is completely covered or you are fully sure, but what the hell is the ref supposed to do there, he has to go by his best judgment. Secondly, you've probably been told this a plethora of times and either do not get it, or you do get it and you purposefully ignore what people tell you and just contiunally enjoy getting slammed on. This is a Red Wings forum. They played the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals two years ago in recent past. The majority in here do not like the Penguins, if not everybody in here doesn't like them. Plenty don't like their captain all that much either. Not because he's one of the best players in the game at present, but largely because of his other attributes/lack thereof. He was voted the whiniest player in the league by NHL players, he's probably as equally hated in the obsessive fashion by fans across the league as much as he is liked. That does not equal being jealous of him whatsoever. That just means people get that he is a great talent, but dispise him because he acts like a whiney punk way too much for our liking. Got it? Get it through your head. If you want to like Crosby, cool, I'm not stopping you and I don't have a problem with it. Continually acting surprised though at the reactions you get when you are involved in conversations about him is incredibly naive and stupid, and don't pretend like you don't notice. See above why.

    Controversy in Pittsburgh

This is one of the most embarrassing posts I've ever seen on this board, and I've been here 2 1/2 years. I've seen trolls whose only purpose here is to post "LOL RED WINGS SUX!!!! DEAD THINGS!! LOLOLOLOL!!!11" spout less embarrassing things than that post. We get it. You're attached to Crosby's nuts. You think the sun shines out of his ass, his s*** smells like roses and when he smiles, you say "But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is Crosby, and he is the sun." I'm convinced he could go on a tri-state murdering spree, kill 34 people including infants, war widows and puppies and you'd still say that Wings fans were jealous we didn't have a puppy-murderer on our team who can kill puppies like he can. Just please.

    Controversy in Pittsburgh

The ref lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle before the puck crossed, no goal. Play is dead when he decided to blow the whistle also he has like 1 sec of intent timing, considering how they called May's goal last year inconsistency makes it a controversy.

    Marc Staal destroys Matt Stajan

Perron was paying attention to the pass he was about to receive, Stajan was carrying the puck with his head down. Huge difference. This hit looks pretty clean by the rules. Still, Staal could have easily aimed for the near shoulder instead of the chest and the hit would have been just as effective, but less injurious.

    Marc Staal destroys Matt Stajan

Delicious hit. Hit to the head, but this was more north and south than the Thornton hit. This is the same type of hit Kronwall always delivers; he gets low and explodes in the player, you can see Staal left his feet either a fraction before the hit or a fraction after. Regardless, it was a very nice hard hit from a player who knew exactly what he wanted to do the moment Stajan got the puck.

Go sneak into the lower bowl, and if someone actually goes to that seat, congratulate them on not being an asshat and move to a different one.

From the very little I've seen on TV, it's actually seemed better than in the past two years. Of course, I haven't seen much this year and, on top of that, I'm really hammered right now and can't process whatever the hell Katie Couric is saying... maybe I shouldn't even be commenting?

    Controversy in Pittsburgh

There should be no question on this, whatsoever. The whistle blew before the puck crossed the line. No goal. Simple as that. Once again, the Pittsburgh bias in this league rears its ugly head.

    Controversy in Pittsburgh

I live in Raleigh, and the canes are the 2nd team I follow closely. We despise the penguins here in Raleigh about as much as i'm sure they do in Detroit. Makes me sick, every time there's a pens game the little pittsburgh transplants come out of the woodwork. Anyway, the call was beyond weak. The News and Record beat guy (who does a good job of cover hockey btw) inquired the league about it who said basically "Toronto's sole job was to determine if the puck had crossed the line, which it did." They claimed they had no sound in Toronto (bull s***,....as the numerous "intent to blow" penalties have bitten us) so they only cared about if it went in. Here's my thing though......we've had about 12 of these goals go the other way,...I.E. the whistle blows (or doesn't lol) and the ref says the play was dead. The replay very CLEARLY shows the whistle go off long before the puck goes in, yet it's a penguins goal? At some point, people are going to wake up. All around the league everyone calls red wings fans "tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist" because of the 09 playoffs. But how many teams does s*** like this have to happen to when pitts is involved before someone discovers an email or something letting us all know something we've all secretly believed for years; the NHL has favorites and the calls go towards those favorites. I only saw the actual replay not the game in time before. Look at Crosby,...jabbering away at the refs. Now I know that's what captains do, but then,.....the ref who's hearing all this motions to him like,..."ok okay, we're going to give it to you, calm down". Any other player in the NHL the ref doesn't even give them the time of day and asks the player to step away. Shessh guys,...at least act like he doesn't have your ear 90% of the time.

I bet your tune would be different if the shoe was on the other foot I'm more worried about the bell ringing part. Plus the article said he "might" have hurt his shoulder, not that he "did" hurt his shoulder, big difference.

    Flames Fans Blame Refs

Because the Wings are doing well this year? Who knows. Every fan blames the refs a little more than they should, but the people on that Calgary board took it to a whole new level. A couple of the penalties might have been soft, but how many times do the Wings get nailed for hooking when they're just going after the puck? Homer gets called for goalie interference for just standing in front of the net. Bad calls happen all the time, if the Calgary fans want to know what bad calls really look like, they should watch a replay of the Wings-Sharks series in the playoffs last year. The fact is, if Calgary would have shown up for the 3rd period, they would have won. Stupid mistakes and legitimate penalties at the end cost them the game.

    Patrick Eaves Watch Thread.

Eaves and Miller should not have to rotate, Hudler should be the one sitting out games. Eaves and Miller should be rewarded for their hard work and hustle and be allowed to play. I want the 4th line of Eaves, Helm, and Miller reunited.

Here's a couple videos, both best cast scenario, solid contact hits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9jgP1brUn8 Both clean hits, both solid, both involve a moving object and a relatively stationary object. Both Reggie and RJ get their s*** ruined. However, even given the likely difference in player weight, even a 2mph difference is enough to push the hockey hit over the top in force. At least Reggie was able to get up for a moment. RJ was just destroyed. I wouldn't want to be either of them, mind you. Also keep in mind that, assuming both players are completely stunned/out of control when they fall, and both fall on their back, RJ is going to have a harder impact on the fall... ice is significantly more solid than any average ground. Though that's relatively inconsequential in context of either of these hits.

Here's a fun little tool to add to this that'll help those of you who are uncertain on physics to see calculations of hits. http://www.exploratorium.edu/hockey/checking2.html If you want to set up an example comparison, you can use Lindros (230 lbs) moving 17mph hitting Tkachuk (220 lbs) moving 14mph to simulate a very high speed football hit. Then, to take into account average weight differential, you can use Leetch (190 lbs) moving 19mph hitting Sakic (185 lbs) moving 16mph to simulate an average speed open ice hockey hit. The 230 vs 190 and 220 vs 185 is roughly the same percentile difference as the weight of an average NFL player compared to an average NHL player (~250 average for NFL player vs ~205 for NHL player). To add some numbers used elsewhere (you can easily calculate this on your own with any number of online calculators), a 200lb hockey player moving 24mph has as much force as a 350lb football player moving 18mph. Again, just another example to put in perspective how much more important speed is in a calcultion of force than mass.

But in the NHL you have 215+ lbs skating towards you at 30+ mph Football players are ******* anyways. Oh no, you sprained your ankle. Lay on the field for 20 minutes only to get up on your own and walk away. I highly doubt any football player would sacrifice their body to block a 100+ mph slap shot either.
