3 pointsWow seems like a lot of people are really down on Commodore. He had a bad season people where he got waived and now all of a sudden noone thinks he is even capable of staying out of the pressbox? The guy still played almost 20 mins a night the last few years when he was in the lineup, almost 3 minutes a night short handed, and is much better offensively than Salei. Sure Commodore isnt super fast but hes just as good of a skater as Salei, is used to playing 19 minutes a night compared to Saleis 16, plays more pk time and is a big, mean player who can hit hard and will fight light heavyweights. He is basically salei with more offense and a much bigger mean streak. Just bec ause he tried to take a wings player head off and fell into the bench doesnt mean hes a god awful player. At least he has that mean streak to go and try to light a guy up like that. Not to mention prior to going to CBJ, Commodore was one of the better stay at home types in the league playing a big part in 2 cup runs for Carolina and Calgary. If theres a team that can help him find that form again, its Detroit. Look what they did with Lilja who was a similar guy, who was even worse than Commy when he came to Detroit. People need to give him a chance instead of watching him fly into the bench on one youtube video to decide hes a bum. When he does this to tools like avery everyone will sing a different tune.. or stiicks up for the goalie like this Not to mention guys liek Ericcson and abdelkader will play tougher because they know a 6'5 Canadian mean SOB will be backing them up

3 pointsI dunno...I guess it's good for depth. I don't really care if it's on a one year basis. Here's my complaint though. I love the Wings, but these "filler" players are becoming annoying. At first I understood that it was due to the salary cap, but as time goes on and it seems to be affecting us more and taking up more roster space, I'm a little less convinced. Particularly given the cap space we now have. Players like Bertuzzi, Hudler, Miller (because he's redundant, not because he's useless) and (sadly, as of recently) Holmstrom. These are players that don't necessarily hurt the roster, but they're not actively helping us win. It feels like they're just...there. They adequately fill a roster spot, and as is so important to Holland, we haven't over-paid them. I understand that this won't change this season, so why not add another one in Drury? But after the contracts of Bertuzzi, Holmstrom and Hudler are up, I want them all gone. And if we sign Drury, I want him gone too. (Sorry to Holmstrom, who is one of my favorite Wings of the past decade, but it's time to retire.) Those are my hopes for next off-season. And I will be so pissed if Drury screws that up.

Wings looking at Ty Conklin
LidsFan reacted to swedishconnection for a post in a topic
I totally feel the same way. When ConkBlock left it stung a bit. If he can get it through his head that hes a fantastic backup, but a below average starter then he may just be able to play hockey for a living and make decent money (compared to us on the internets...) -

Forward lines next season?
13dangledangle reacted to Superman54 for a post in a topic
TBH i like the first suggestion there, with bert playing on the 4th line. I just didn't want to have both Holmstrom or Bertuzzi in the top 6, or even the bottom 6 together either. Having Bert with Abs could actually turn out to be a positive thing, the speedy Mursak wouldn't hurt either. Then Helm and Eaves can play together which seems to do them good, and if Cleary plays as good as he did last year, that becomes a very strong checking line. -

I would love to see the reaction of this place if Holland were to get absolutely wasted and that were to happen, God forbid. -

Rebound reacted to stevkrause for a post in a topic
In that case, I apologize for it being in reply to your post as it not entirely directed at you... as you've missed a LOT of asinine, knee jerk over-reactions over these past 7 weeks, just go back and read some of the threads and you'll see where I'm coming from...however, the whole context of my post was not directed entirely at you... With that said, I still think your post specifically was a little bit of an over-reaction to our current situation... the holes we still need to fill are minor and nothing to be concerned about... that was all I was getting at in response to you directly. -

Rebound reacted to stevkrause for a post in a topic
July 3rd. I repeat... July 3rd. The goalie we're missing is a BACKUP The forward needs are debatable in the first place, but once again, July 3rd, and trades still exist. Coaches are Babs decision, and unless they're not there come training camp, that's hardly something to get worked up about... Once again, I re-itterate. Be patient... I feel like a damn grief counselor, talking people off buildings on this board around this time of year... -

Buffalo signs Ville Leino to 6-year, 27m contract
Drake_Marcus reacted to eva unit zero for a post in a topic
So... they save $250k from Tim Connolly. Who has been scoring consistently at a near-PPG level in Buffalo for years. And is reliable defensively. In five full seasons played since the lockout, Connolly has averaged 60 games played, 14 goals, 36 assists, and 50 points. Sure, he's had some injury issues. But even with that, he's been as productive per-season over those five seasons as Leino's one good season. Makes you wonder why they would get rid of a proven first-line NHL center in Connolly to pick up Leino, who has had one good season on the wing of a top-end center, and try and cram him into the center role which he hasn't played since juniors. And for the record, Ehrhoff's contract is great unless the cap shrinks considerably; they get a high-end defenseman on the cheap, and can deal him later to a needy team if they have to. -

Wings sign D Ian White to 2-year, $5.75m contract
Majsheppard reacted to The Noodle 39 for a post in a topic
I like both signings of White and Commodore! Solid stuff I know everyone wants to replace Rafalski but you cant... IMO this can be a good thing cause Kronwall gets more ice time and he is our second best defensemen and i think is really coming on! Our D is solid and Erricson may surprise us guys! I think our D is set i want another forward and i think thats what we need maybe at the deadline we could add a goal scoring forward? Thats what we really need cause yes our whole team is solid but sometimes we have a hard time scoring goals in the playoffs and it would be nice to have a legit goal scorer but that is not in our cards this free agency but hopefully at the deadline? I think our D is solid and our goalie Howard good enough back there we need someone who can SCORE! Because we have too many playmakers on our team and no goal scorers lol. I like our team and there playmaking ability just wish we could fit in a brett hull like player in there heh be nice. -

Holland Appreciation Thread
55fan gave a reaction for a post in a topic
Bump July 1st Kenny Holland was the worse GM in the world. July 2nd Kenny Holland was brilliant and methodical. Funny how that works. So far Wings got bigger, faster and younger... and still have over $7 million ($10 million if they move Hudler) left over to spend. -

1 pointThe only other dman of any merit who wasn't overrpaid this off season was Eric Brewer. I think Holland got the most bang for his buck as far as defensive spending (White, Commy, Big Rig). I say this and I HATE Ercissons contract but in respect to the entire situation we are better defensivily than we were last year, younger and bigger. Plus we don't know how much of a negative effect McCrimmon had on our defense and with a new D coach a lot of people will probably be quite pleased. Like I said last page though, I'd love for a big mean son of a *****, if that happens, helm/Murzak/Abby will be running people through the freakin boards.

What about Nabokov?
55fan reacted to NeverForgetMac25 for a post in a topic
Comments like this irritate the hell out of me. Like Holland wouldn't have paid $1.5 for Vokoun in a heartbeat. Like he didn't atleast check with Vokoun's camp. I know its rocket science but do you think perhaps the fact that Vokoun would be the undisputed number 1 had anything to do with him not considering Detroit? Nevermind, lets just go on hating on Holland for making one slightly large overpayment given the market. -
1 pointI love Ozzie to pieces and always will, but if we can get Conks back I think it will be better for the team. I just can't see Oz bouncing back from the injuries he's had over the last couple of years. He's been a great part of the team, and I will always love his fight with Waaah. He's been a great goalie as a starter, and as a backup he's been a great mentor for Jimmy. I think Conks could do well in the mentor/backup role. Since Conks is coming off of relatively bad seasons, he should come with a very reasonable price tag. He seemed happy here. I'm for this signing.

Bogosian put nearly the same numbers up as Ericsson last season and was just as much of a pain in the ass for Thrasher fans. Trading for Bogo is trading for a project player with potential. -

Wings sign D Ian White to 2-year, $5.75m contract
Majsheppard reacted to Drake_Marcus for a post in a topic
If Smith makes the team out of camp Holland will make a trade of some sort. There's zero chance they keep Smith on the roster unless he's secured the 6th defensive spot. You don't let an asset like that rot in the pressbox when he could be playing 25 mins a night in Grand Rapids. Holland obviously made a concerted effort to get meaner on the back end. The Wings D is bigger and tougher than it's been in a long time. -

Richards to NYR
hooon reacted to dawings1905 for a post in a topic
Um, you do realize that Franzen (basically a 30 goal scorer, and outside of last season, has been a playoff beast) is paid almost half of what Richards just got? Richards gets 6.5 mil, while Franzen gets 3.9 mil. I am trying to figure out how in todays grossly overpaid market, a 30 goal scorer for 3.9 mil is an albatross? 3.9 for a 30 goal guy is a bargain in todays NHL. But go ahead and use a poor example to try and benefit your argument somehow. You can compare Z to Richards as they make similar money. Franzen does not. While the length may be similar, the $$$$ is bargain. For crying out loud, Leino makes more per season than Franzen. -
