2 pointsYep, and then use magic to free up three roster spots. Perhaps we could send Samuelsson to Azkaban?

Who do we Unload, reload on before the season starts?
ogreslayer reacted to DSM for a post in a topic
Oh absolutely. That's why I used "re-sign/replace", since anyone who isn't resigned will need to be replaced, whether it's from within or outside sources. -Samuelsson, Bertuzzi, Eaves and Gustavsson are probably pretty much gone. Alfredsson could retire. Emmerton will be an RFA, but obviously if the team thinks he can be replaced or that they'd have a hard time moving him once he's resigned, they can decline a qualifying offer. -The Quincey situation will be interesting... Obviously Ericsson seems to be the more valuable of the two, but Quincey currently makes more. -I doubt Sheahan will get a spot on the big club for 14/15 unless he shows big improvement in GR this season, or they know he'll be playing a big role. He'll have one more waiver exempt season after this one, and he'd probably be best kept in GR until his options are out. -Almquist, Ferraro and Callahan are all out of minor league options after '13-14 and it seems they may have the fast track on any small role opening for '14/15. -Howard has now proven that he can handle a big workload and should be expected to start 60+ games a year. After Gustavsson is gone, they could probably get away with using an experienced and cheap journeyman backup in the ilk of Conklin (the first time), Mason, McElhinney, Joey MacDonald etc. That way Mrazek can keep playing and developing in GR. -I've also gotta think that with all of the cap space opening up after this next season and the potential retirement of Alfredsson, Holland will probably try to go after a big name in the UFA market next summer. Vanek? Pominville? Ryan Callahan? Michalek? Timonen? Thornton? Marleau? Boyle? Kessel? Phaneuf? Sedin(s)? -

True words. The only thing that might prompt a trade is if they're wanting a specific role filled or want a specific player. That's still doubtful. -

Or to make any trade with us at all. Teams could just sit around, and wait to see who we try to pass through waivers, and then pick up players w/o having to give us anything in return. -

For some reason, my excitement level for Weiss is increasing daily. I hope he turns out to be Flip plus goals. -

If I had to put money on it right now, I would say that Sammy ends up on the roster & plays out his entire contract. Same for Bert. Neither are going anywhere until next off season. -

Brunner Contract Talks

Best opportunity=guaranteed top 6/PP spot perchance? Not happening in Detroit unless Kenny suddenly ships off Abby & Franzen in a trade. Let's concentrate on getting that 1 year deal with Nyquist finally done & trimming the roster by 2 spots instead of dreaming about Brunner. -

I'm pretty sure the ordinary course buyout period was the same as the time frame for compliance buyouts, which means it expired back on July 4th. Basically compliance buyouts had to be done during the already defined ordinary buyout period. No go on a Sammy buyout then since the window won't open again until June of next year. Going by memory here, but I believe the lone exception to that comes down to teams that have had 2 players go to arbitration & having a 3 day window open for potential buyouts after an arbitration decision is done. Didn't apply to the Wings this off season. -

So in other words, they're trying to make up for the money they won't see by the Red Wings not visiting three times a year? -

1 pointI dont know for sure, but I dont think you can just freely bury players on LTIR if they arent hurt. My guess is that the league has some sort of way to make sure that teams aren't using LTIR as a way to circumvent the cap. Besides, Bertuzzi is 100% healthy, and Samuelsson is supposed to be ready for camp if he isn't already. I doubt there will really be any way at all for the Red Wings to unload Samuelsson or Bertuzzi. I doubt any team wants to cough up assets for an aging winger that missed significant time last season, without the Red Wings eating up some of their cap hit. I also can't see Holland eating any salary since they are going to be so close to the cap this season... I also can't see either player waiving their NTC's this late in their careers. I think the team would like to unload Tootoo, but only if the deal makes sense. I dont think they want to retain any of his salary, nor do they want to take on any more contracts or players. My guess is that interested teams want one or both of those included in a deal for Tootoo and Holland doesnt want either. If they cant move him sensibly, he'll be on the opening roster. Waiving him won't be benificial because the Red Wings would have to pay $975k against the cap for him to play in GR if he goes unclaimed. I think part of this decision depends on Helm. If Helm isn't ready to go, Emmerton will stay on the team as the #4 center until Helm gets healthy. Then, if they don't have room, they could waive Emmerton. If he goes unclaimed, he can go to GR without anything counting against the Wings cap. With Re-entry waivers gone in the new CBA, they will be able to freely recall him without worrying about him getting claimed and having to pay half his cap hit. As much as I like Emmerton, if he gets claimed I don't think it will really be a big deal. Ferraro will get a look this season, and was probably already on track to get a spot as a #13/14 forward for the 14/15 season. If Emmerton is gone and they need a center to fill in, they have depth in GR. I would say that it would be pretty realistic to expect to Emmerton get traded or waived if Helm is healthy to start the season. I think Eaves would be next in line to go. If he can't be traded, waiving him and sending him to GR will only cost the team $275k against the cap. Not a huge number to pay to get to the 23 man roster limit. Another option they have would be to start Nyquist in GR. Probably won't be the best or most popular choice, but if they wait till about ten games in when teams start facing injuries and/or making decisions on whether to send junior eligible players back to their junior teams, they might be able to find a taker for some like Tootoo, Eaves or Emmerton. Then they can recall Nyquist for the rest of the season when the space opens up. Dekeyser can start in GR, but I can't really see the logic in demoting a d-man, when you have a logjam at forward... Carrying 6 dmen and 15 forwards won't make much sense. If a dman comes down with an illness, a very short term injury or has to leave for personal reasons of some sort, they won't be able to recall another Dman and would have to dress five of them. I think the Red WIngs options to get down to 14 forwards are as followed, in this order: 1. Trade Tootoo 2. Trade/Waive Emmerton 3. Trade/Waive Eaves 4. Start with Nyquist in GR 5. If still injured, start with Helm on IR

That would necessitate Andersson be hurt then. If Dats or Z are injured, they have the healthy one at centre and wingers move around. If Weiss is injured, Dats and Z are split up or Franzen takes 2nd centre duties. If Helm or Andersson are injured and Tuzzi is healthy, Abdelkader could move down to 4th line centre and Tuzzi can take his spot on the 1st line with Dats and Z. Emmerton is a last resort bud....sorry. -
1 pointYeah, "seriusuly". I'm pretty sure that I mentioned that it was a personal opinion. That means that I like him, but other people don't have to if they don't want to. I know, I know. That sort of thing meets with hostility around here, but I thought that the rest of my post had enough content that I could throw in a personal opinion.

From the linked article: So it's just for the pre-sale that the Hawks zip codes can't buy the tickets. That still doesn't forbid someone from another area from getting them. If the Hawks are as organized as LGW, this will be a minor inconvenience. -

How will they know if you're a hawks fan or not? If you buy a preds fan ticket and wear a hawks jersey do they not let you in? Do they check to see if you wear hawks shirt under another shirt? This is just stupidity -

Wings sign Stephen Weiss, 5-years, $24.5m
Powerplay reacted to Z Winged Dangler for a post in a topic
Exactly. Kenny Holland said he was going to sign big forwards at the draft. He did. He said he was going to try and get a 2nd line centre and was looking at top 6 guys. He followed through. He said he was going to have to move some pieces around with trades and that guys that were assured spots on the Wings next year are Tatar, Nyquist, Smith, Andersson and Lashoff I believe. He's followed through on everything else and has been patient, unlike some GM's and has been responsible with a cap that's gone down 6 million. 2 best GM's of the summer are Kenny Holland and Kekaloopydoo from the BJ's. -

Ok. I'm necromancing. I had to dig up this thread because I had a weird thought with no place to put it. This isn't serious. It won't happen. It's just something that would be funny to think about and maybe would make a funny movie plot, but that's it. What would happen if all of the guys who were getting bought out got mad enough to give a collective "FU" to the system. You know, the "stick it to the man" kind of thing. What if they all (at least the good ones) got together and decided that since they were getting paid anyway that they would all sign for one dismal team not owned by the league. Let's use the Panthers as our example. Then suppose they let the Florida GM in on it. The GM picks up all of the buy-outs for 2-4 years, trades his lower-level players for draft picks, picks up some has-beens that still have a year or two left in them as free agents, and builds a team that looks like the all-star game from a decade or two ago. Briere, Vinny and other buyouts. Jagr and other free agents. They put together a team of former super-stars, make for a fiscally good team as far as drawing older fans (hey! We're in Florida!) and then when they have had a few years and these guys retire, the farm system is stacked to the brim from all of those high draft picks. If it was a movie, the Old Guys would go on to win the Cup, of course, but in RL, it would make for a fun team to watch. Just running through my brain. Thought I'd share.
