I think the Chicago series fooled Holland into believing the Red Wings are closer to championship contention than in actuality. So, instead of embracing the youth movement that got the Red Wings into that position during the playoffs, he continued to force veterans into the equation. I don't really have a problem with the Alfredsson move, but keeping Cleary was insanity when you have Nyquist around. Not to mention, the Samuelsson signing was a mistake all along and I don't think most of us needed hindsight to see that coming. The NHL thrives on speed now -- a huge reason why Brunner and Nyquist were so successful with Andersson on the third line in the playoffs. Now, the Wings have Abby and Cleary playing there tonight.

That was a mess of a period. Wow. After a pretty decent 1st I didn't think this team would once again fall back into a coma and get dominated. Better 3rd please? He's probably thinking "what is it about Tatar that is dragging this team down and what veteran can I trade him for?". Thruthfully I think he expected us to be as hit with injuries as we've been the last 2-3 years, counting on that to solve any logjam problems. We'll get injuries eventually and maybe then we'll be glad we have a deep roster, but Holland HAS to realize it's a crazy situation to have a team that is struggling this bad when Nyquist is stuck in the minors for no good reason.

So if I predicted Miller, Alf, and Z to score, and if they all score, do I get curly fries for a prediction hat trick or do I just get to go to Arby's and predict that they'll have curly fries on the menu?

At least once a game I remember that DeKeyser was undrafted and is a rookie. Crazy. Lashoff has looked very good too.

Quincey was another really poor Holland decision. Changing the lines constantly isn't helping. You can throw any combinations together and it won't matter if the forwards just aren't good enough or are getting outworked.

When Quincey takes a penalty he leaves no doubt about the call

I have a good feeling about tonight's game. Last night the wife and I tried a new BBQ place (to us) up in Binghamton and the bartender comped me a glass of Douglas by Macallan (I was shocked since it was my first time in the place). That's got to be an omen of good things for the Wings. Wings win 5-2. Zetterberg, Tatar, Datsyuk, Franzen, DeKeyser. Let's Go Wings!

It would be incorrect to attribute an entire team's defensive play (for good or ill) on one guy. However, there doesn't seem to be any problem pointing out that Smith has been our worst defenseman so far this season. Someone has to be. Obviously he's not to blame for stinkers like the Ottawa game, but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask "why is our worst defenseman playing top line minutes against Ottawa". It's pretty much universally agreed that Smith has tremendous upside, and that he should be given an opportunity to work out the kinks in his game. However, he shouldn't be allowed to do so at the expense of the team, or of other guys who have been playing better. I think that is what many people feel, and I realize that could easily be misunderstood as "blaming Smith". Secondly, in spite of the fact that Kyle Quincey is an easy target to be a whipping boy around here, he's been incredibly solid so far this season and in no way deserves the kind of antipathy he receives on this forum.
