Generally speaking, older players start slow and come on strong later, while young players start fast and fade off. I was referring to the list the league came out with before the season. There wasn't a single Red Wing on it. And I agree that it's still very early.

You're just trying to spin it to still blame the franchise when in reality they just sucked. Smith got to play with Lidstrom so can't really complain about development there. Neither AA nor Mantha's development is being questioned even though last year we all bitched about their ice time (especially AA). You know why it's not really an issue anymore? Because they're actually good and EARNED it. Jurco and Smith didn't because they just aren't good. Cherry pick all you want but it's just excuses to justify that you're right. It's just hard for you to admit that those 2 simply weren't good NHL calibre players.

Ya guys lets just move on from Jurco and Smith. I think its fair to say that both came into the organization with potential, and both never lived up to it. You can argue that some of that is on the coaching/management, you can argue that some of that is on the player. Neither would be incorrect. IMO, I would say Jurco was really not given the opportunity, while Smith just never took his game to the next level.

Smith was here till 27/28 so not sure what you're trying to say. Second bold point. We do know for sure. Jurco is in the AHL and Smith is benched. He could come around though. You act like the Red Wings butchered these players when in reality they just weren't as good as you assumed and literally 3 different GM/franchises and 4 coaches made the same decisions on them. I'm sorry I guess I just take issue when people act like the Red Wings franchise and their coaches/GMs are shyte but when it comes to the other orgs and coaches doing the same thing to the same players they turn their cheek. Larkin and Mantha are off limits for me, unless we can get an elite number one defenseman for one of them straight up, and that's not going to happen. Like has been mentioned, the best teams in the league have a minimum of two elite (or borderline elite) forwards, and one elite defenseman. We have the two forward pieces in Larkin and Mantha, so I wouldn't try to fill the defense hole by creating a hole elsewhere. No, we're not going to get an elite defenseman without trading an elite player, but I don't believe we should be trying to trade for an established elite defenseman. We should be trading for a defenseman with elite potential. Those are available without trading a Larkin or Mantha. I always go back to the Hamilton trade, who was traded for picks (a 1st and two 2nd's). I'd look to teams like Nashville and Carolina, that have a plethora of high end defenseman on the big club, as well as in the pipeline. Neither Jake Bean or Dante Fabbro are going to cost a Larkin or Mantha, or even Athanasiou for that matter. Bean and Fabbro may never become elite either, but the potential is there, and worst case they become serviceable defensemen, that didn't cost the farm to acquire. All of this will be moot anyway when we land Dahlin in next year's draft...

We've been playing with 11 forwards and 7 Dmen for at least a couple games. I liked the interview with Blash after the last game where he connected the strategy to AA getting the chance to play Center and wing as he's getting double shifted to cover the missing forward. It's all good with me. Especially with the Dmen we have - I'd rather not having anyone playing huge minutes. This way we spread out the icetime for them.
