Official 2018 NHL Amateur Entry Draft Discussion Thread
Dabura reacted to Neomaxizoomdweebie for a post in a topic
some of you guys are going to be disappointed when the defense next year is exactly the same as this year. Unless we draft Dahlin, or Green can't play, I don't see anyone new on the blueline next year. -

Should any of #91, #13, #40, #30 be retired? Poll/Discussion
Hockeymom1960 reacted to Neomaxizoomdweebie for a post in a topic
Same can be said about Gretzky. No individual player should ever be bigger than his sport. Not Gretzky, not Jordan, not Tiger, etc. No one player should be so "big" that they have a league mandate to retire their number. Not even 42. Individual players always benefit more from their sport than the sport benefits from one individual. -

Our draft position

I agree. Signing Daley, who is at the tail end of his career, for three years with a NTC made no sense for a rebuilding team. Sure, he's a solid top 4 defenseman, but it was just an unnecessary signing in my opinion. Luckily it was a very fair contract, so it was never going to cripple the team. The NTC however, makes him difficult to move if and when we need to make room for one of the kids. It becomes a modified NTC (15 team no-trade list) 10 days prior to next year's trade deadline, but he can still determine whether or not he gets traded by carefully selecting those 15 teams. We're going to need to make room for some of the kids (Hicketts, Cholowski, Hronek, maybe someone else) over the next season or two. Ouellet is likely gone, Jensen could easily be moved (although I like him as a bottom pairing guy). Kronwall is on his last year, and Ericsson could be moved (although I doubt he will be). Depending on Green's health, he may be back. DeKeyser isn't going anywhere. -
1 pointI've always been a fan of the Western Canadian teams, and became a big Jets fan the moment they came back to the NHL. It also helped that we had their farm team here for a couple years. I just really like the way that team is built. I'm a huge fan of a lot of their players. Scheifele, Wheeler, Connor, Ehlers and Laine, Byfuglien, Trouba and Morrissey, Hellebuyck looks like he could be the real deal. They have the elite talent and the depth. Stastny was a huge addition as well. I think (hope) they're going to go on a long run. Same. I realty like the way Poile has built that Preds team as well. If it's not the Jets, I'm hoping it's the Preds or Bolts.
-
1 pointSame, I’ve been on the Jets band wagon since Laine. Kid’s just so damn exciting to watch.. Plus they’ve got a ton of depth everywhere. But really, the winner of the probable Jets/Preds second round series is who I want to see win. Would also be okay with the Caps, Kings, or.... Bolts (don’t hate me, every other wings fan ever)

1 pointJust watched a video on ESPN, apparently 4mil was raised for the families through a Go Fund Me. They said that Dion Pheneuf donated $10,000, or at least his name was listed for that amount.

BFS workout time. -
1 pointI’m sure it was; now it’s just a little longer of a summer workout. It just says that management views a longer summer in the gym as more beneficial to him/the team than getting him some more minor league hockey experience. I can agree with that.

Did expansion to smaller markets in the South happen because of Jordan, though? The NBA had a big boom in the 80's because of Magic and Bird. -

Yeah I’m not quite sure why Gretzky’s number is retired league wide. I wouldn’t be surprised if his records do actually get broken eventually within the next 50 years or so. Players are just getting better, faster, stronger. Just 10 years ago the NHL was slow. It’s lightning fast now. In 50 years who knows how these players will be. -

Oh my goodness! I think that kid's brother tweeted about him dying and how they were so much best friends. Bittersweet I'm sure because you never want a tragedy like this to even happen, but can you imagine the joy of finding this out? -

The criteria is basically spending your entire career with the Red Wings and being an HOF player. So Zetterberg, Dats, Feds, maybe Osgood (still no Hall for him yet). Chelios has no chance. His prime was not with Detroit. He was known more for his Chicago days. -

Holland and Blashill expected to return
marcaractac reacted to Dabura for a post in a topic
I've actually warmed to Blashill a bit. Larkin had a solid year, took a big step forward. Mantha had a solid year. Bertuzzi's showing a lot of promise. Frk performed about as well as we could've realistically hoped he would. None of us liked that Svechnikov was basically glued to the bench for his first few games with the Wings this season, but maybe that was the right way to ease him in; he looked comfortable by the end of his stay and was starting to produce. Glendening scored 11 goals and finished with just shy of 20 points. Nielsen's numbers were disappointing, but he was used in a shutdown role, which may or may not have been optimal deployment on Blashill's part. Zetterberg was Zetterberg. Helm and Abdelkader were Helm and Abdelkader. AA produced like a middle/bottom-six winger, which is what he is right now. I guess you could say Nyquist and Tatar regressed, but I'm not convinced either one would be much better on a different team. Tatar hasn't really done anything as a Knight. Our defense group is crap, but I'm not sure many coaches would get more out of it. Ericsson was good this season, by Ericsson standards. Kronwall put up close to 30 points. DeKeyser has been slowly deteriorating, I don't how much of that is Blashill. Green was Green. Daley puts up more points if Blashill uses him on the PP more often, but the Ericsson-Daley pairing was pretty good for us. Jensen was Jensen, a bottom-pairing 27-year-old defenseman without much scoring upside. Hicketts looked good and it seems like Blashill's been very clear with him on what he needs to do if he wants to stick in the NHL. Team sucks at making passes through neutral ice and winning games in OT and scoring on the power play with any kind of regularity. But, overall, I'm not sure Blashill is really part of the problem right now. -

It's inevitable (unfortunately)

Found this article from last year, but its still timely. Really well written. https://www.nhl.com/news/detroit-red-wings-25-year-playoff-streak-comes-to-an-end/c-288192312 Think of how much time has passed since the Red Wings last missed the playoffs. No player in the NHL today was in the NHL then, not even Jaromir Jagr. Nine of the franchises in the NHL today weren't in the NHL, 10 if you include the Vegas Golden Knights. Fifteen players who have appeared in a game for the Red Wings this season hadn't been born. Now think of how much the Red Wings accomplished over the next 25 seasons, a quarter of the Centennial the NHL is celebrating this season. They won the Stanley Cup four times, tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for most in that span, and came within a game of winning it a fifth when they lost Game 7 of the Final to the Penguins in 2009. They went to the Final six times. They won the Presidents' Trophy six times, three times more than any other team in that span. They won 1,133 regular-season games, 104 more than any other team, and earned 2,536 points, 209 more than any other team. They set records for wins in a season (62 in 1995-96), road wins in a season (31 in 2005-06), consecutive road wins (12 in 2005-06) and consecutive home wins (23 in 2011-12), and they tied the record for home wins in a season (36 in 1995-96). For 21 seasons, they didn't come close to missing the playoffs. They finished in the top four in their conference 18 times and had a cushion of at least a dozen points the other three times. It wasn't until the past few seasons that they had to fight to make the playoffs. But the Red Wings streak might have been the most impressive. It was really two streaks in one. The foundation of the first was Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov and Nicklas Lidstrom, whom the Red Wings surrounded with a strong supporting cast, many of whom ended up in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and Scotty Bowman, the greatest coach in hockey history. The foundation of the second was Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk and Zetterberg. "Right when everyone thought we were going to slip, when Sergei moves on, Stevie's getting to the end of the road, next thing you know, Pav and Z come in," Draper said. "Unbelievable. That put us on another 10-year run." Lidstrom retired in 2012, and still the Red Wings kept making the playoffs. Babcock left in 2015, and still the Red Wings made it another season. Datsyuk left, and, well, finally, this is it. Until now, the Red Wings were the only team to make the playoffs each season of the salary-cap era. Can the Penguins surpass the Red Wings streak? Fifteen years from now, Sidney Crosby will be 44. Evgeni Malkin will be 45. "I don't know that you'll ever see this again," Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said. "I don't know that you'll ever see a team be this elite of a franchise for that many years. That's what we're striving to do, and we're not even a third of the way there, really, for the number of years that they've been able to do it." This is why Holland doesn't get enough credit IMO. -

@chaps80 Marc Andre Fleury has more wins than Osgood. He has 404 wins, 3 stanley cups. Hall of fame + Number retirement? He’s only 33 btw. -
1 pointRasmussen continues to torch the WHL playoffs with 19 points (9 goals, 10 assists) in 6 games. This is the sort of production I was hoping to see out of him all season. He's really starting to show that he was worthy of that top 10 pick. Tri-City swept Kelowna in the first round, and are up 2-0 on Victoria in the second round. They look like they may go on a deep run, which is great, but I also want to see them knocked out, so Ras can help the Griffins go on a deep run... This will likely be the only time Rasmussen gets a chance to play in the AHL. If he continues to dominate the WHL playoffs, and impresses in the AHL playoffs, has a good summer / training camp, he will likely make the Red Wings full time next season. It's either another year of junior or NHL for him next season, he cannot play in the AHL (except when the WHL season is officially over).
