I honestly would take a young Brendan Smith over him. His time in the NHL has been awful, and maybe he was rushed, but he's been just as bad for the Griffins. 4 pts in 14 games and -6. He's passing into everyone's feet, and panicking the moment any semblance of pressure is applied. Smith was picked 7 spots lower and was at least putting up 30 sum points in 60 sum games in the AHL at this age. It makes you wonder why Cholowoski was ever called up to the NHL prior to this. I'm not saying his career is completely bust or anything, but both Yzerman and Holland had no business putting him in the NHL so young. This kid looks to be years away from contributing still (hopefully). Thank god we have Hronek. Even undrafted Alex Mcrea makes him look scratchable. I hope Yzerman gets creative and flips this kid for something better. I don't see a top4 future for him at all. Wasted 1st round pick.

It's more about having competent goaltending as the team improves, especially if they can steal a game every now and again. Markstrom has been really good behind a young, rebuilding team over the last five years.

I'm not convinced that either of these guys wouldn't get slaughtered behind this D. Even 3 years from now.

I'm not at all convinced we will be signing one of the bigger name goalie UFA's yet. There will be other teams in need and goalies should realistically avoid us like the plague. After you get past those guys re-signing Howard is an entirely realistic scenario in some cases. Yzerman is a progressive thinker though so I figure he'll snag something he likes slightly more ... uh yeah so Yzerman doesn't plan on trading him, right...? lol Someone literally mentioned trading Howard yesterday buster brown

Does it really matter though if he walks as a UFA? And surely you don't think he should be re-signed do you?

I'd be okay with keeping Abdelkader around as an overpaid 4th line grinder for the next few seasons, but yeah, if we can trade him, I'd do it. Nielsen needs to go. Hopefully this summer. Yeah, that was the original point, but I'd just shop Nielsen at 50% and hope some team takes him. But yeah, I doubt it. If a trade can't be made (without giving up too much), I'd buy him out this summer.

Limp dick liberals destroy an aggro sport. Not really all that surprising these days, but it still sucks. Hockey will get softened and softened and softened until it becomes like every other castrated sport. Then they will wonder why folks are choosing to watch a more accessible sport like soccer or basketball over hockey, but it will be too late by then, and the sport will wane into obscurity.

I don't think either player is on 3/4 of the rosters in the NHL. We happen to be in the 1/4 where they are because we simply don't have any better options. These guys are placeholders, that's it. But I agree, by the time we can replace them, they will be history. I doubt Yzerman would think twice about having a 4/5 million per year AHLer for a couple of seasons.

1. Abby and Nielsen are bottom 6 caliber NHL players. Just because they're overpaid doesn't change that. Are you saying that Abby and Nielsen couldn't find jobs in the NHL if they were only making 2 million dollars a year? Cuz you'd be wrong. 2. Doesn't matter who signed them. If Yzerman didn't think they were NHL caliber players he could just demote them to GR like he did Ericsson. He hasn't done that because he still sees them as capable bottom 6 forwards, just really overpaid ones.

We need a bold move for a goalie... Georgiev or that KHL guy the Leafs really want (Timur Bilyalov)... that's an absolute necessity moving forward. Howard is clearly done, Bernier has played very well but nobody can see that much rubber and stay sane. We literally don't have a minor league goalie who'll be a player in the NHL for 2-3 seasons if ever. Its downright ugly!

Your probably right , im sure rivers cuomo is looking at his pie charts now to determine who to trade for and considering green doesnt have the pts hes no where in sight anyways im sure we’ll find some contender to take him though , sadly should have happened 3 years ago and returned us a 1st . I imagine the true leader in the lockeroom is Glendening right now which is why he got the A. Rest of the team is young or career below average boring pros. Mike Green is a hipster doofus. Howard's fat. Dekseyser is always injured. Helm is boring. Abby is washed up. Glendog appears to be a model professional, but has zero charisma. This is the year we sorta needed an Alfredsson, uncle Todd, or Otter fersure. I definitely agree there. Yzerman may have underestimated how much character our lockerroom truly lacks when he first joined.

To be fair to @Dabura I wasn't trying to say this team doesn't need those types of players. And I don't think he was saying that signing said players should be THE priority. I'm just saying that this team sucks because it SUCKS.

Cholowski has definitely been disappointing the past several months, but he's still young. I think he was thrown into the NHL too early. He may never be a top four defenseman, but I think he still has NHL potential. But then again, he may end up being Brendan Smith 2.0... One thing I definitely disagree with though, is this... ... the bold in particular. He's still showing a lot of poise with the puck, including when he's being pressured. The offensive awareness is there, but like with Larkin, I think management are stressing the importance of defense first. Unfortunately, I still haven't seen enough improvement in his defensive game. Maybe he gets there, but maybe not... I'd definitely by okay with a trade, depending on the return. It would likely have to be part of a package, but maybe Athanasiou and Cholowski plus a pick could garner a nice return?...
