Just got home from the game. Another fantastic performance by Howard. The Wings, for the most part, shutdown the Hawk attack. When there were breakdowns, Jimmy was solid. I've been watching hockey for 45 years, and I think that is the first time I have ever seen a natural hattrick......in penalties! Pretty hilarious watching Toews go to the box, get out, and go right back in. Can't wait for Saturday! GOOOOO WIIINNNGGGGSSSS!!!

Long story short, I'm not so sure that I do want to trade CHI, MIN, and STL for BOS, TOR, and MTL
I can see your point. We've been rivals and division opponents for 30 years(Except of course the time Minnesota moved to Dallas). The Norris Division years were great, but being in my 50s, I can also remember being in a division with Montreal in the late 70s. I'm kind of torn myself, but for me, getting away from Columbus and Nashville is a good thing. The history of the Detroit franchise was used to get them started, now it's time for them to sink or swim on their own.

I guess I'm just showing my age, but I won't be too disappointed in leaving the Joe. I have some great memories of the games I saw there; the 1980 All Star game, the two Stanley Cups, all of the great players and seasons, (the place where I was a long time season ticket holder) which I will always be grateful to Mr. Ilitch for putting together. But the atmosphere of the Olympia, even with the bad Wings' teams of the late 70s, was great. For those who enjoy the sight lines of the Joe, you would've loved Olympia. Yes, there were obstructed views in spots, but you were right on top of the action, in both the Arena and Mezzanine seats. The sight lines were fantastic. So here's hoping to a modern new building, with the "retro" look. I do hope that the outside resembles the old Olympia, the Joe always looked like a warehouse to me.

    where did i say that?
everyone already knows that cooke is human garbage. that's nothing new.
a discussion about the potential that players may intentionally embellish any hit near the head due to the new rules might actually result in some conversation. it just so happens that the most blatant example of that so far was abdelkader. hopefully it was a one-time thing.

Actually, there IS something we all can do about it. The professional teams get taxbreaks, and our tax dollars for their buildings. The public universities get our tax dollars. They in turn sign contacts with merchandising companies that produce the shirts, hats, etc. that they count on us to buy. Well, almost, if not all of it is now made outside this country. If we all take a stand, and refrain from purchasing their non-American(and to our friends up North, non-Canadian) made products, they WILL notice.
These teams and schools want us to support them, to spend our hard earned money on them. They count on us to support them, and we should demand the same. They make a lot of money from the merchandise sales, but they don't seem to care that it's not made here. I personally will not buy any merchandise, from any sports team, that is not "Made In The U.S.A." I am not advocating a boycott of their games. We are all fans, and should enjoy our teams. Just don't spend your money on anything else.

Can we stop bitching about the loses of this year and last years team? Do Red Wing fans understand you can't win the Stanley Cup every frickin year? Come on boys, I think this fan base is more knowledgeable than this. We act like we AREN'T spoiled year in and out by actually making the playoffs. I could ONLY imagine what would happen if the Wings were to not make the playoffs, oh my.. god...

    Couldn't disagree more.
    1. NHL embarrassed itself for hiring such imbeciles to referee games in the playoffs.
    2. Red Wings played more games than any team in the entire NHL since lockout. The 2006 roster wasn't much different from the 2010 roster. Of course this will start wearing on players as they play more games than all other players in the world... despite how "professional athletes", they are still human beings.
    3. Red Wings suffered from one of the worst injury riddled regular season than most can remember from the history of the franchise. No way these players were healthy going into the post season.
    4. Despite all odds, Red Wings still made it to the 2nd round and played well enough to win against the #1 team in the West... Just couldn't get over the hump (See: injuries, phantom calls / 5-on3s).
I may be the minority here, but I am completely satisfied with the Red Wings and appreciate their efforts with all things considered. Red Wings are, without a doubt, the best team since lockout. Why can't others appreciate all this teams success and accomplishments?

2008 for me. At the time, I didn't think it would mean the most, but my dad was in the hospital for much of the summer of '08. No matter how dull the stay, or how painful or annoying the tests, he'd always raise his spirits by saying, "oh, well. At least we won the Cup." It got him through. He died in February of '09, so he went out on top.

Also, that team had something that no other team in NHL history has ever had before or since: 4 500+ goal scorers on the same team (Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille). And Steve was literally a warrior on one leg throughout the entire playoffs. Talk about an epic year.

Good post above. That '02 team was just unreal. Graduated that year and will always be the single best sporting event I was able to attend. Craziest thing when they announced that Nick won the Conn Smythe that got more of an ovation than Lord Stanley did I think. Oh what a night!!!

This one is really tough for me. I was going between 1997 and 2002. And as much as I loved the memory of watching Stevie Y hoist the Cup for the first time, I had to go with 2002 by a slight edge. And for me, it's partly because the early 2000s were really, really good to me in life. My best friend died in '97, and then Vladdy's career gets ended in his prime. I just wasn't as happy a person back then. But 2002 I was thriving, loving life and having a great time. Literally everything was going right for me, so the Stanley Cup championship was definitely the icing on the cake for me. Plus that was such an epic squad. Arguably the most stacked we've ever been as a franchise. To this day I still miss that 2002 roster. That was the one year where almost every single hockey fan thought the Wings were gonna win the Cup. And they were all right. Also, that was the one team in a long time to actually win the Presidents Trophy and then go on to hoist the Cup. And that still hasn't been done since. That team was so good that it got the job done almost every night as soon as the first puck dropped game 1 of the regular season, all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.

Probably 2002, just because of the entire hockey year. Dominating regular season, with a Team Canada Olympic Gold in the middle, followed by the comeback against Vancouver in the opening series (All my friends are Canucks homers, so it was an intense series), followed by the 5 game spanking of the Boos, followed by the game 7 destruction of Colorado in the WCF. I just wish we would have gotten to take out Toronto for the Cup instead of Carolina. Oh well.
    f*** it, I can't pick one. Tie.
