There's no reason to sit Maltby IMO. He's still a good agitator and shut-down player alongside Draper, which will be huge come playoff time.

The choice is clear: Vote Samuelsson for the Bench!

I respectfully disagree. Maltby hasn't been an effective aggitator for the past two seasons. He's a very good reciever of aggitation by constantly getting glove washed by the other team after the whistle. But when you take bad penalties like he did last night, the other teams have every reason to try and provoke a stupid penalty. It's not cause he proked the action, it cause they know he's capable of taking dump penalties. He's still a valuable player to our team, but not a good aggitator anymore.

The two forwards with the least ice time last night against Nashville were Maltby (10min) and Sammy (11min). Give Maltby's penalty parade early on he probably would have played similiar ice time to Draper/Cleary (13-15min). I'm hoping Babs is seeing what the majority of LGW posters are seeing; Sammy has been useless. His "shots" are not the product of good decision making and his physical play has been waning to say the least. Hudler looked good last night as did Flip. Cleary is a hard worker along with Maltby and both can kill the hell out of penalties so their value is a little more than their point totals would indicate.

I hope Babs sees what we see and sits Sammy down for a few, he can always change it up if we struggle, but for now Sammy deserves to be the "odd man out".
"And? If I did, I probably would have been a fighter, so what?"

Who knows; maybe you would realize that enforcers in hockey are critical to a teams chemistry and overall success?

Sammy should ride the pine

QUOTE(Louisville @ March 30, 2007 - 10:09AM) View Post

Why? I don't understand.

Especially since Huder has played so well and Samuelsson has not...is Babcock afraid to tell him how it is? Does he just not want a two rookies in the playoffs? Is he afraid to hurt Sammy's feelings?

I just don't see what Samuelsson provides for this team at all right now, if he'd at least work hard in the corners he'd have an argument. Obviously that is not the case.

I couldn't agree more with you guys. The problem is that Hudler and Filppula are the noobs this season. Of course both are making a strong case for having it not be them who sits. It's not going to be Filppula, and Samuelsson will get the BS nod. I'm not saying I agree with it, its just what I see happening come April 11th.

Trust me, I hope I'm wrong.

Sidenote: You don't have to argue with me how worthless Samuelsson is. I lead the charge on that front.

I understand your POV, but you have to remember that the regular season is extremely different than the playoffs in regards to the frequency of playing teams. Very rarely do teams play each other 3 times in a row in the regular season, but when they do, you can see a nastiness that wasn't there in the first game. Players start to get annoyed seeing the same guys like Maltby every other night for possibly 2 weeks do what they are famous for. It may not agitate players as much in the regular season, because generally after the game ends one team is on a flight going to another city and doesn't see the team they just played for a few weeks. In playoffs you can bet Maltby will get under the skin of his opponents when games 3-4-5-6 roll around.
It's amazing how much clarity comes when you care more about the Red Wings than any individual player.

"They are the best team in the world. They are a team that can just take over when they want to," Chicago's Patrick Kane said (of the Detroit Red Wings).

hudler and filppula add way more to the dimention of the team than sammy does. plus sammy just takes up far to much TOI and just isn't that affective.

hudler-has proving that he can play solid hockey, and produce

flip-has shown no flaws, glimpses of greatest, plays smart and produces

maltby-is a playoff player, grinder and gritty, good defensively

cleay-also good defensively, along the boards, gritty

sammy-always manages to look awful, shoots when he shouldn't, passes when he shouldn't

umm, this isn't rocket science Babcock...the choice is clear...Sammy

Why do you say this? Filpulla has proven himself an extremely valuable player; he can score, playmake, hit, and kill penalties. He has proven himself perhaps a better center than Lang at the moment. Further, Babcock has shown tremendous confidence in him, giving him first-line minutes and consistent time on the PK. With all of this, what indicates that Babcock will choose to sit him? Even when Zetterberg returns, Flip is simply FAR Too valuable at center for us to ever consider scratching him; all signs from Babs show him starting throughout the playoffs.

I am fine with Hudler having a bad attitude if he gets shafted on the playoffs. He has been Babcock's whipping boy for far too long. It is getting to epic proportions.

I agree with you guys, Sammy should sit, but it will likely be Hudler.

I still think Flip. Hudler has been hotter lately with the Lang and Calder line, and he would be a better fit on thw 4th line when Z returns and Bert is placed on the 2nd line. Playing with Franzen and Sammy is a better fit for a passer/sniper/floater than it is for Flip who is more of a corners and split the D and drive the net kind of guy.

But, I would MUCH rather sit Sammy. Let Hudler and Flip play with Franzen and that would be a HUGE energy line. But Babs won't sit Sammy because he's a veteran like Lang and Maltby.

It still would be nice to have that one guy.

yeah he got the tying goal and double OT winner in game 1 last year.

anyone remember those goals? to tie it he pretty much crosschecked the puck into the net, and the winner hit a defensemans skate and went in.

im not saying we should sit maltby, but the reason he is going to play definately isnt for his goal scoring.

if you gave me the choice, i would sit sammy.

bingo.

i've liked how maltby has been playing lately

plus he's more valuable to the Wings anyway, with his PK.

It will be Flip.

Should be Sammy.

Maltby and Cleary will not sit during the play-offs. Maltby will never sit any game in a Red Wing uniform.

It should definitely be Sammy. It will be Flip. I hope they don't sit Hudler.

And they would never sit Maltby.

If Babcock benches Hudler or Filpula in favour of some other less useful players, which I'm afraid of, there wouldn't be any better way to demotivate both kids more.

Better trade them than burry them such way.

If they bench hudler they are seriously taking away a goalscoring threat. The wee man deserves his chance, and filppula just provides so much of an all round game.

What a great problem to have. The rookies are making it hard on the Wings to bench them. I'd even throw Kopecky's name in the mix for a useful big body if we need to do some pounding one game.

Anyone who said Cleary most not see him play , probably the best forechecker on our team ..

Sammy should sit , and stop starting topics like this , it doesnt matter what we think , Its Babs call , let him take care of it.
