2007 College Football Season Talk

Not to pile on the Michigan fans, but you guys paid App. State $400,000 to end your national championship hopes.

I know the immediate reaction is to fire Carr, but his job can't seriously be in jeopardy, can it? I've always been under the impression that he's been around long enough he'll get to go out on his terms.

As a Michigan fan, I hate how many seasons start with "Natl Champ" hopes. I suppose every team has some kind of title hopes before the season starts - but I prefer ( as a fan of course) to just play the first several games and see where things stand after that. I don't even think they should rank teams until a game's been played - but that will never happen with all the pre-season magazines and shows....

Personally, after the last two seasons, I'd be fine with 2-3 losses (NOT to OSU though) and a bowl game win (no Rose Bowl!). It's not that I don't want my team to win a title, it's just the expectation every year is a little over the top.

btw, I'm curious as to what happened to you at law school at State that made you dislike UM so much? Seen as how you didn't go to undergrad there, I'm just wondering..... I grew up in EL watching the Spartans then moved to A2 for college, so I root for both teams, but I take Blue over Green in the state rival game.

Agreed, thats why i said Michigan's best bet is to win out and make the Rose Bowl. It was Eva that said Michigan still had an outside shot at the championship game.

Eva's glasses are so blue that he's legally blind. One thing I'm actually relieved about is people can stop talking about Natl Championships... And NO Rose Bowl please - UM never wins there - it's unlikely anyways and we've been there 3/4 years - California is sick of us! Any bowl win would be an improvement at this point.....

Just for reference, I didn't say Michigan had a realistic chance at the title game. I said it's THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE. Realistically, there will probably be at least two other one-loss teams that do not play Michigan. I outlined the only kind of situation in which Michigan would go to the title game, and recognized it as UNLIKELY. But I guess people just feel the need to bash me for not being suicidal over a football game.

You said Michigan has an "outside shot" at the NC game. No one else backed you up, even the michigan fans.

An outside shot meaning exactly what I said; If Michigan wins out, and there is one or no one-loss teams that didn't play Michigan, Michigan would be a reasonable choice to play in the title game. I didn't say it would happen, but it's certainly POSSIBLE. Until a team has two losses in a season, it's still POSSIBLE for them to play in the title game. I think you are confusing POSSIBLE with PROBABLE.

Losing to Appalachian State has zero impact on the computer rankings, which means Michigan still has an outside shot at the national championship game if they run the table, because the computers would consider them undefeated.

It was that quote that stirred up all the attention. The computer rankings might consider them undefeated but there is NO WAY that the voters would vote Michigan in, even if Michigan wins out.

How can you crown the National Champion of Divison 1, who can't even beat a team from 1-AA?

I have never once said that I felt Michigan was good enough to win the championship or deserved to be there this season. I simply stated that the App State loss didn't affect the BCS computers, which makes it a better embarrassing loss than say EMU, which would be just as bad from a human voter standpoint, but WOULD affect the computers, and is much later in the season. The BCS basically uses a combination of 3 rankings. If there are no one-loss teams left at the end of the season that haven't played Michigan, and Michigan wins out, that means Michigan has a good chance at ending up in the top 3 or 4 in the polls. If they winall of their remaining games and nobody else goes undefeated, 3 or 4 in the polls might be enough to get a berth in the title game. Now, you have to realize that's a LOT of Ifs, many of which likely won't happen. But it's still a chance.

Throwing them in the title game makes them worthy of playing for the championship. Michigan, right now, doesnt even deserve to be playing for the 1-AA title and is an embarrassment to NCAA Div 1 and the Big Ten Conference.

And if all the IFs that I postulated happen, they are worthy of playing for the title. How about if Oregon lose to UM and then beats USC? Wouldn't that make USC unworthy?

No, because USC would have then lost to a Div 1 school.

...but still got more votes in both polls than the Spartans did...

One of the voters in the coaches poll still picked Michigan at #10. They either mailed in their vote early or didn't turn on a television or radio, read a newspaper, or surf the internet all weekend.

I think Michigan is chicken dinner against Oregon. They are playing an App State offense with much better athletes. I expect the Michigan D to get fried, and much better play from Henne.

I expect it to be a battle. No doubt about it. But honestly, I think Henne, Hart and Manningham will pick up the slack for the defense. It's gonna be tough to stop Oregon from scoring. But they will certainly have their hands full trying to stop Michigan from getting into the end-zone. And considering what happend last week. I really expect us to come out like men possessed. Cause they know, they still have something to play for...Respect.

Hmm...I saw a quote with that coach saying he still thought they had a damn good team. And besides...Michigan would have been higher than 10 on a vote assuming they beat App State.
