Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

Wings have made their final offer

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...nswer_from.html

General manager Ken Holland said Monday that he is not in a position to negotiate with Hossa. He is waiting for a response from Hossa's agent, Ritch Winter. The deadline is noon Wednesday, when free agents can begin talking with other teams.

"I've touched base with Ritch Winter every day, nothing really changes," Holland said. "I'm OK either way. I'd love to have him back, but at the same time, if they believe there's a better financial opportunity out there it was a tremendous one-year relationship.

"We tried to be creative with contracts. I've expressed to Ritch and Marian, 'Here's what we've got.' We walked through the numbers. I know he likes it here. I believe it's a tough decision for him."

Winter did not respond to a phone message.

Sounds like they gave up on trading his rights....

I would imagine with the limited time between the deadline and now (less than 38 hours now), that Kenny wasn't able to field many decent offers. Any team that traded for Hossa's rights wouldn't have much time at all to be able to negotiate. A week ago, he might have had a few good offers, even two or three days ago... But at this point, I think it's just too late for a rights trade to be made.

Stop dickin around Hossa. Make a f***in decision. I can't wait any longer. He better not wait around until Wednesday and not sign and leave us with nothing.

It's a bit more complicated than just signing on a dotted line.....

I'm just impatient, but actually it's not that complicated. Take a huge pay cut to play for a great team or go for the big bucks. It's a really tough decision, but not that complicated.

......................................

Hossa: They look like little square pucks!

I think its actually a problem with the way they are asking for his signature.

Holland: Ok Hoss, we are gonna need your whole name on the dotted line here.

Hossa: My whole name?

Holland: Yep thats right, Most of your name just won't cut it. You can't just give us most letters and not finish the job off with the rest of the letters.

Hossa: hmm How about if I give you two letters for every 4 letters in my name?

Holland: ..... *facepalm*

Hossa: Maybe hank could finish the rest of it for me??

Haha sorry i couldn't resist!

Anyone remember last year on July 1st. Some moron made a topic saying "Wings sign Marian Hossa." I was like yeah right, and of course it was fake. And then the next day, I wake up and see Wings sign Marian Hossa. I was like WTF, why is this still on here, but it was true this time. Someone needs to make a false thread so I can wake up tomorrow and see the real one.

Whatever dude, you know as well as everyone does, it was a lot of people who came up short this playoff. Hossa didn't choke anymore than Hudler or Holmstrom. He outscored them actually. But to actually act like Hossa owes it to you to come back and play for pennies just because he didn't lead the world in scoring in the playoffs, is idiotic. Dude, he gave up MILLIONS to have a shot at the Cup here, you really think he's going to give up MILLIONS upon MILLIONS to try it again? He just might, but that doesn't justify you calling him a playoff choke and insinuate that he is raping Holland by asking for $6million. My point was, if Hossa is a playoff choker, then so are Holmstrom/Hudler/Draper/Maltby amongst others who failed to perform as well as they did last season. But according to your logic, every supestar should come play in Detroit for a fraction of what you're worth if you EVER want to win a Cup. Chump, you call him, pathetic I call you. You are probably one of those "fans" that boo Fedorov too...

Hossa had a little more motivation to play harder than those guys you mentioned. Plus he was get paid over 7 mill to score more than those guys. Comparing Hossa to 4th line guys like Draper and Malts is ridiculous. Even Homer and Huds.

I won't think any worse of him if he walks. His decision. If there were no cap, or it was higher we wouldn't even be discussing this. But alas, we are and I'll be surprised if he takes this big of a paycut to stay in Dtown. None of us would do it at our jobs....

Hossa was great. If he leaves, oh well. That is all he bought in for. 1 Year, 1 chance. He owes us nothing. His quality of character doesn't change because he leaves. The guy is a f***in class act and I will cheer for him no matter where he plays.

 If only certain other "fans" would see that...

...and yet, evryday Labor Unions accross the country are FORCED to take huge, life changing paycuts in order to "save" the company all while the executives are hanging on to golden parachutes and getting government stimulus packages so they can fund their own bonuses. Many more people are volunteering huge paycuts so they can keep their job, and are still filing bankruptcy and foreclosing their homes all while the rich get richer. F**K you Executives, Chysler, GM, Delphi, Northwest, Delta and any other union bashing hack out there!

...ok, now back to subject. It's too bad Bettman and the owners screwed the PLayers Association (Union) by only upping the Cap by $100,000! Thats not even league minimum, at least up it by one body! Even though the teams made more money this year, more teams soldout, the playoffs were the most watched in a long, long time. The league generated tons more money this year than last and they still only raised the cap by a measley $100,000! It's too bad because Hossa at $6m IS a huge, HUGE discount, and we cannot even afford that! It is absolutely horrible that the teams with ourageous support have to suffer because teams like Phoenix cannot keep up their end, like punish me because we have a huge fanbase! Hey Gary, if I am a Wings fan living in Phoenix, doesn't matter how much you pamper the local team, I am not changing to a Coyotes fan. The more you screw my team, the more you alienate me from the sport, period. You are ruining the NHL and hockey in general. You are forcing these players to take HUGE pay cuts in order for your owners and your board members to rake in record profits. Thanks Gary, thanks for recinding the instigator and thanks for nothing...

I will not Hate him if he leaves, much like when Fedorov left...

I've just been told the NHL has discontinued the salary cup. Also, I'm hearing that Bettman has resigned, and the Tigers have won the World Series

This would be nice, but this can also turn into a nightmare scenario. The Wings can negotiate until 11:59 AM on Wednesday and walk out empty handed when they had the opportunity to gain by trading Hossa's rights.

This doesn't qualify as a "nightmare scenario." The Panthers got a third-round pick and another expiring contract for Boewmeester. That's nice and all and better than nothing, but this isn't some tremendous wasted opportunity if they aren't able to sign him or trade his rights.

So according to Mlive its a take it or leave it 4-4.5 million cap hit that he has to sign by noon tomorrow or honeymoon is over.

I will wait and see.

I think that they are going to sign him... $4.5M longterm deal would be OK... Hossa is looking for $5M / $6M (from the Wings) I'm pretty confident that Holland will do the right thing...

Hossa must be hesitating (which is a good sign). The fact that they haven't made a deal yet might mean Holland thinks Hossa might crack and go for the 4.5 (I hope so). If he does sign for 4.5 and we trade someone like Lebda to clear a bit of cap space, we might be in a better position than we thought cap-wise, right? No an ideal situation but we may have some options.

I won't make any predictions, but I think this delay is a sign progress is being made.

I'm with you. No news is good news. If the answer from Hossa wa "no" we would already know. Fact is, he is still considering it.

Is this what Pens fans went through last year?

As far as the waiting around goes, yes. Some of us understood his decision last year, but would have rather he made it sooner rather than later (however, to be fair I've never been a pro hockey player mulling a multimillion dollar contract!) --

...so I can understand the frustrations people might feel about the waiting game.

so much for a decision being made on Monday, eh? Oh well, maybe no gnews is good gnews!

That's the way I see it. If it was a complete lost cause, we would've traded his rights for a few rolls of tape. No action means they're still talking IMO, and if they're still talking, it means they think something might get done. We shall see.

Also, thanks to everyone for handling this waaaay better than Pens fans last year, however it turns out.

hum-bug. I'd rather get a 6th or 7th pick (preferably a 2nd or 3rd rounder) than nothing. Hossa's not signing, he's as good as gone and we get nothing in return, which really blows.
