How is he defensively? I see he can fight, stick up for his teammates and rack up some PIMs, but I don't want a pylon out there. The cap hit definitely favor us, trade Hudler and Kindl for Carkner and Neil. Of course if the pot needed to be sweetened, Holland could do it...

That would be a god aweful trade.

Not sure what kind of defensive help Kenny could be thinking of... a stay at home kind of guy that can log lots of minutes would be nice, but thats hardly Ken's style.

Our D will improve considerably when Stuart returns... and the 47 shot game is a bit of an anomaly... it's the soft goals and poor rebound control that Howard has shown lately that concerns me, not the goals he has no chance on... with that said, I think Howie will be fine and we don't need to find a new starter, but I think we most certainly need to look for a legit backup, just in case.

I'd send Kindl and a pick/prospect to Carolina for Pitkanen in a second...

The Wings can't afford to send Kindl for Pitkanen, sadly. He'd be a great addition. The Wings can only afford to add about 628k in full-season cap hit right now, according to capgeek. Kindl for Pitkanen would require just over 3.1m for the swap. If Carolina is truly requiring a defenseman in return, then it's Stuart or Kronwall/Miller. Miller would only be there to level the cap space.

If a defenseman is not necessary, then Carolina would probably be looking at one of Flip or Hudler in return as Detroit needs to send at least $3.4m out to get Joni.

I don't see it realistically happening, but the only way I can see it happen without the Wings dumping off major pieces is if they move Salei, Kindl, and Miller as part of a three-way deal. Retroactively place Modano and Osgood on LTIR, and hopefully that makes enough of a difference.

Thank god someone with some sense. I'll never understand the love LGW has for Carkner and Neil. It blows my mind people would be willing to move Kindl and Hudler for that trash out of Ottawa.

Despite Hudler and Kindl's struggles I sincerely think people are overvaluing the Sens' players.

I was more talking talent exchange, someone had asked if he would be worth trading for and what he was like... I wasn't even looking at the numbers, or the feasibility of it...

See heres the thing about Hudler. Its not even hate for me, its just the salary.

For what he makes and what he does to help this team he is the best trade option, there are some people on this board who love Hudler way too much.

If Holland can realistically trade for a good defenceman I think that will help us WAY more come playoff time then having Hudler put up a few points. Defence wins championships and Detroits probably needs an upgrade, Hudler is the best person to move for the wings really. He is one dimensional and now that he is putting up some points probably has some good trade value

Why move a player who has just started to find his game whose trading value is going up? We wouldn't get enough in return and Hudler is only getting better.

How do you know that though? Other teams might look at him and be like OK he got 60 points, came back readjusted to the NHL and is lighting it up again.

He might actually have more trade value then we think.

And this team is built to win now with the window closing, if it means maybe not getting quite enough value as we should but ultimately helps this team win a cup then a cup is worth getting a little less then what you should for a guy like Hudler.

This is an important point. Without Hudler, would you say Detroit lacks scoring? No. Complete opposite. But does Detroit have the defensive strength for a long playoff run? Not at all.

Doesn't have to be Hudler, just he offers nothing except scoring so if I had to trade a forward in a situation like that I'd choose him.

I don't expect Kenny to do anything at the deadline. There are too many buyers and not enough sellers so the prices will be high. I think Kenny is fine going with Ericsson and Salei as the bottom defense pair. My only concern is if we run into injury problems, can we throw Kindl in there and be comfortable?

Exactly, people sometimes seem to forget that you have to give up something in order to get something back. Hudler with his salary and for what he provides is our most realistic player to move.

In order to seal up our defence maybe our offence needs to take a little bit of a hit, but if thats what is necessary to stop this team from giving up so many goals then that is what must be done. We are simply not going to win much in the playoffs if this team doesnt seriously crack down on the back end.

Chris Phillips and a 4th for Hudler will do the trick I think. We need to get a legit stay at home type defenceman that can play like pre concussion Lilja did. Right now the wings have a bunch of guys who ALL try to play offensively. Salei even jumps up in the play quite a bit and plays a little bit risky. A shut down stay at home, shot blocking, PKer is what the wings need to get. Phillips is a good person to look at

Do you guys really think we can move Hudler without including someone or picks to sweeten the deal? Hudler has been playing great for a bit now, but not enough that other GMs would take a chance on him without getting a for-sure deal back.

That said, with how the team has been playing recently, nothing will happen at the trade deadline. People seem to want a stay-at-home defender, but forget we're getting one in about a week: Stuart.

We have all of the solutions to our problems in the system right now, as long as they play well.

I think the problem is fans have short memories.

When we had everyone healthy on this team at the beginning of this season,..including modano,..this team was unbeatable.

When we get everyone back,..we'll still be unbeatable.

Now i'm the one who typed all that up and all,..but even I know the rebuttal to this has merit, When we won the cup in 08 we brought in Stuart who was exactly what we needed then.

It stands to reason something similar wouldn't suck either.

I agree. I don't think we make any moves this season. Getting Stuart back is big and then getting Modano back before the playoffs will be very nice.

This off season will be worth watching for the Wings.

rinse and repeat. not that i mind. it's always fun getting new players in but that's a good thing if we don't have a need.

on second thought, scratch that...we need jarkko ruutu.

If Detroit can get another defensive defenseman with some physicality and potential for a few points every so often, I say we get him. I don't trust Kronwall or Rafalski defensively enough for the postseason.

Hudler is showing he can still be a great complimentary player in the NHL again and I am sure GMs will not ignore his short term potential.

I wouldn't mind Phillips, but I think there are better options out there. Phillips turns 33 in March, and the last thing we really need is another aging player. Ideally, i'd like a younger stay at home defenseman that we could lock up for a few years after this year, like Ladislav Smid from Edmonton, among others. Our defense hasn't been consistent this year and I think Kenny is going to shake things up, although we have looked a bit better these last few games.

Replacing Salei with Phillips would be great and would seriously upgrade the defense. My only reservation is the fact that we'd be replacing a cheap defenseman ($1.1 mil with bonus) with a much more expensive one ($3.5 mil cap hit for Phillips). But we'd be asking Phillips to play a smaller role than he's used to (and paying him more than you pay a player on the 3rd pairing).

Also, in his last two playoff runs (20 and 6 games, respectively) he's put 0 pts up. That makes me wonder how good his first pass is. Maybe it's just his role that limits his offensive output in the playoffs, but you'd like to see a bit more offense when it counts from a guy being paid that much. Stuart is a good comparable-- he's asked to play the same role as Phillips but can play the PP in a pinch. Phillips is a more imposing physical player but Stuart fits the Red Wings team better. I really don't see enough Senators games to make an educated judgement on this.

Lastly, Phillips is a UFA this summer while Hudler is locked up at a reasonable price until next summer. With the prices continuing to inflate I can't help but wonder how much more Phillips would get this summer.

What about a cheaper option who plays a similar game to Phillips?

Radek Martinek is 34, makes $1.5 mil and plays for the Islanders so he can probably be had for a bag of pucks.

Without Hudler, would you say Detroit lacks scoring? No. Complete opposite.

So losing Hudler would improve the team's scoring? No. The difference between last year's roster and this year's roster is scoring depth. Subtract Hudler and you're asking a 40 year old Modano coming off a serious wrist injury to be the difference in scoring depth.

Moving forward, this team will have one less young forward who's a proven scorer. I'm not sure how positive that is given that we have far more proven bottom 6 players graduating to the NHL than we do top six players.

What about Eric Brewer... I think we could squeak him under the cap if we were to ship out some salary in a deal for him...

We need a physical, quick DMan who has a willingness to clear the front of the net.

I highly doubt there's going to be any kind of trade happening this trade deadline. The reason being is that we don't have enough cap space, if there we're to be a trade Filppula needs to be involved in this trade because his a NHL decent second line player and is still young. Either then that I only see some of the kids being a potential trade baits but if I'm a GM of another team I would be going after Filppula. His great defensive play and offensive upside gives him the edge.

All tho I highly doubt Holland is ready to part ways with him.
