Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted April 12, 2014 At this point, I think they could definitely use a stop-gap before Ouellet, Marchenko, Sproul, etc. come up to the big club. I don't want that stop gap to be Kyle Quincey again. Almquist should battle for a spot on the team in camp, and I think he could be an asset on the PP, even just for the short term. Lashoff has been running around too much lately, and I'm not sure how much management trusts him as an every day defender. Out of the UFA crop I'd be willing to take a look at Meszaros, Orpik, Mitchell, Greene or Nikitin before I went with Quincey/Lashoff as a regular, even if it's just as a two-year transition period. I know some (maybe most) of those guys will be retained by their current team, but those are pretty much the five I'd take over the current situation. Worst case scenario, so long as Quincey moves on, I'd still be fine with some combination of Kronwall, Ericsson, Smith and DeKeyser as the top 4, with Kindl, Lashoff and Almquist rounding things out.I just hope Kenny doesn't have some misguided sense of loyalty toward Quincey. He's a product of the team's development and they gave up a 1st for him... but he's still Kyle Quincey. Please, just let him go, Kenny. 1 trule23 reacted to this

Wheelchairsuperhero 1,453 Report post Posted April 12, 2014 Don't forget about worthless Quincey... I think Quincey's been pretty good lately. Not great or stellar, but solid. Aside from some of the penalties he takes I don't think he's the detriment people make him out to be. Do I wish he contributed more offensively? Sure, but he's not at the top of my list of defensive worries. Kindl on the other hand is infuriating. 2 marcaractac and PavelValerievichDatsyuk reacted to this
wings_fanatic 677 Report post Posted April 12, 2014 If the rumors are true about Toronto possibly getting rid of jake Gardiner I highly recommend the wings try to get him... I think he's gonna be a stud in a couple years. He's a fantastic skater, has good offensive instinct. He is a little weak defensively but so too is the whole leafs team. I think playing in a much more structured system under the best coach in the NHL mike Babcock, Gardiner would excel. More then that, he would have much better players around him like kronwall to guide him and take his game to another level. Kronwall-ericsson Gardiner-dekeyser That is a fantastic top 4. Both units have an offensive and defensive dman and having dekesyer with him, Gardiner would be able to open up his game much more so then in Toronto. Lastly, Gardiner is 23 so he fits with our youth movement and with him we will have an added piece to what is going to be very good blue line for years with the likes of kindl and quincy hopefully not being here anymore. Get it done Kenny!

dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted April 13, 2014 I think Edler could be had for cheap at this point considering Van is going full rebuild in all likelihood. This is how I assess our needs at D: Kronwall - Smith Dekeyser - Ericsson ???? - Marchenko Lashoff Quincey is too young to sign as a stop gap and he should really be gone at his overpayment contract. Kindl needs to go - he has been terrible. I'd like to break Marchenko in now and see what we have in him before we start inserting Sproul/Ouellet the following year - I think Marchenko is ready personally after playing with men already in the KHL. Smith has grown significantly with Kronwall and I say keep him there. Long term he may be a 2nd pairing dman but he should stay there until we have a true number 2 dman. Sign a vet dman to play with Marchenko for a year and then insert Ouellet/Sproul the following year. At some point in the next 2 years we will have too many NHL dmen with: Kronwall - Smith Dekeyser - Ericsson Ouellet - Marchenko Sproul All these guys are pretty much locks to make the NHL or still be with the team in a couple years. nawein 324 Report post Posted April 18, 2014 We all know Kenny will want to leave Mrazek in GR next year in case of injuries and I don't blame him. Good to have a great 3rd option. Gus is going to want a bigger contract than we want to give him. So, following our trend the last few years, I think theres a decent chance next year that our back up goalie is Marty Brodeur. Old, former face of a franchise comes to Detroit to die. We seem to like doing this. *see Modano amd Alfie* I hate it as much as the next guy but I wouldn't be surprised. Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted April 18, 2014 I'd rather keep Monster around for another year, but I doubt he wants to sign a one-year deal.Outside of that, they've got Mrazek, Paterson and Coreau in the system; McCollum played well on that AHL deal. Honestly, it might not be a popular option, and it's definitely a risk, but I wouldn't mind if they signed McCollum to a one-year deal and let him back up Howie for the year. He's got something to prove, and would likely sign for a year to showcase himself.

Nyquistfan14 489 Report post Posted April 23, 2014 We need to buyout franzen. And somehow get a pure goal scorer, I don't care if he can't play a lick of defense we need someone who can score 30-40 goals. On the back end, Quincey, kindl, lashoff need to go. Bring in Boyle and have xo, sproul, and marchenko battle for the 6 and 7 spot.
frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted April 23, 2014 Toronto would be absolutely stupid getting rid off Jake Gardiner, he had a rough year because Carlyle has this stupid idea that every player has to play his roles. Gardiner needs to work on his defensive game but he can be a very good offensive weapon and has a ton of potential. Toronto needs a coach, who is letting this team play to their strengths instead of trying to force his playstyle onto them. I hope we can re-sign the monster but I doubt he might want to be a starter somewhere.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted April 23, 2014 I'm changing my opinion on Franzen. I really thought he turned a corner earlier this year, and he's still a decent defensive forward, but I'm beginning to think he's just a really good third liner. Babcock needs to change the roles of some players. Smith has earned a spot. He has grown into a reliable defender, although he could always pull a Kindl. Layoff, Kindl and Quincey should be gone. We still need a top tier defender and a solid shut down guy for the bottom pairing. Call up one of Oullet or Sproul for the year to round off the D. On offense it's clear we need to get more creative and bigger. And despite it not being all Howard's fault, I'd be willing to see a change made. It's reminiscent of Osgood pre-Hasek. He's good but we could get better. I'd feel differently if he had ever taken us anywhere but we just don't play good in front of him. I know we can't use Gus as a replacement, but it's hard to explain why we win with him and not with Howard. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

greenrebellion 415 Report post Posted April 23, 2014 Next year's needs? A new coach. A few days ago people wanted him to win the Jack Adams. Difficult for coaching to overcome the talent gap between the two teams. Despite this forums strange beliefs, there is no magic line combo that will turn the Wings into Cup favorites. This forum has become pretty laughable with all the bashing that goes on here. 1 number9 reacted to this

People may have. I didn't. If you can find any post I've ever made saying that Babcock was the best coach in the league I'll donate a thousand dollars to a charity of your choice. You're right, there are no magic line combos to make us a Cup favorite. Nobody ever said that. But changing the line combos might improve an offense which is currently producing less than a goal a game to an offense that is at least competitive. Which is all anybody is asking.
