chaps80 1,591 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 Why not just keep the name Joe Louis Arena? Just because it's new doesn't mean the name has to change. Yankee Stadium is still Yankee Stadium, and MSG is still MSG, despite both being rebuilt. Or even revert back to Olympia Stadium. LC Arena sounds ridiculous. Yankee Stadium is still Yankee Stadium, and MSG is still MSG, despite both being rebuilt. Or even revert back to Olympia Stadium. LC Arena sounds ridiculous. I agree totally. The Yankees, as much as I hate them, didn't have to stoop to the corporate dredges of naming their stadium. And one can only hope that eventually everyone calls it the new joe, like everyone calls AT&T stadium cowboys stadium even though its naming rights are corporate. Because that's what it is, Cowboys stadium. And that's what this should be, the new joe. Let's just all start calling it that and hope it catches on. I think maybe only the saddle dome is one of the last unique arenas left in hockey and I think they're getting a new one too right? This is the red wings, not the ducks, that play in a box called a Honda, or lightning playing in an oil bottle, or sharks playing in computer software application. The Red Wings of Detroit Rock City. Call it motor city arena or the Mo or something classy. Little frickin Caesars? Are you kidding me? I can't name a single person I know that eats or would admit eating that non food. It's only a half step up from McDonald's.

plopster 136 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 The problem is two fold. One, the Red Wings are better than playing in a corporate palace. Two, the company they have chosen as the corporate palace is embarrassing. Everyone will be making fun of it, and rightly so. This just takes another step for the Wings to become no better than the Predators or Hurricanes or Ducks in terms of respect and dignity. Just another hockey club. Its just sad to me. The only thing that saves them is if they don't put the stupid proposed logo on the roof and let it have the winged wheel all over. Other wise they will be a laughing stock. Because from the sounds of Holland, they sure won't be a strong contending team to counter balance the ridiculous name of their arena.
DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 1) the Skankees also charge more than an average mortgage to take your family to a game. They don't need the revenue. 2) Corporate naming rights are the norm, and it could have been worse. 3) It doesn't matter what they call it, if the team is good it will be packed, of the team sucks it will be empty. 3 55fan, Hockeymom1960 and marcaractac reacted to this

Chicago: United Centre (airline) Montreal: Bell Centre (Phone) Boston: TD Garden (Bank) Toronto: ACC (airline) I'm sorry but this post as well as so many others are a complete overreaction. Do I like the name, no, but its really not a big deal. At least its named after a corporation that our owner founded. 2 krsmith17 and Hockeymom1960 reacted to this
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 (edited) My two-cents, for what it's worth: yes, the very wealthy Illitch family can name "their" arena anything they want. It's what weathy people do, a lot. They name big garish buildings after themselves, in spite of the fact that the big fancy building was built on the backs of tons of lower caste people who dedicated their working lives to creating that funds that made the big fancy building possible. Do I think they care for the franchise and the players as people -- yes, I do believe that. I've seen the family treat players like their own family plenty of times when things got rough for a player. This is a two-edged sword. Without the fans buying pizza (never had it, but hear it's bad, or good, depending on who you ask), and fans to pay a LOT for game tickets for decades on end -- the Illitches would not be quite so wealthy. That said, I believe the fans and people of Detroit should have a vote in what the new arena is called. Or, at the very least, have the right to protest if they think the new name is stupid. Personally, I would have really liked to see the new arena named Gordie Howe Arena. It would have been respectful, very fitting and I suspect NO ONE would have said anything other than -- well done!! Honor the franchise which contributed heavily to the wealth -- pizza was part of it... not all of the story. I would have been so proud to say "I've been to The Gordie," to see my Wings. Now, I will just say, glad I got to see the new Red Wings Arena. That's what it will be called in my feeble little fan brain. Honestly, those are very large well respected companies and the names kind of work. United, Bell, ACC, TD sound respectable. Just the name little Caesars is a joke. You just don't put that on a building of large importance and then put the dumb logo of it on there. It's just tacky.

If the founder wasn't the Wings owner, I would agree with you. It may be "a joke" to some today, but people will get over it as time passes. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

You think Air Canada is a well respected company? Ask any Canadian. They are quite hated. Nobody is a fan of Bell either. And at the same time, nobody also cares that arenas are named after them. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

LeftWinger 4,963 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 Speaking of which, wonder what will happen to Steve Yzerman Drive? Makes no sense to keep it named that with no Arena to be found near it. Will they re-designate a road near the new Arena in his honor? Having a road named Steve Yzerman Drive just in the middle of nowhere after JLA is gone is just silly. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

Hockeymom1960 5,107 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 Ok just a question but was there this much bitching by Lions and Tigers fans when their stadiums were called Comerica Park and Ford Field?
plopster 136 Report post Posted May 1, 2016 Prolly not because those names aren't nearly as tacky. Ford is a great car company, quite possibly as quintessentially American as the sport of football itself. Comerica isn't as good, but it has america in the name so its ok. Little Caesars is gross. Can anyone on here actually remember the last time they at pizza from there? Lets remember also, this isn't just a name, you're promoting a product. And that product is as healthy as mcdonalds and coke. Not something I want my hockey team associated with. Unhealthy food like that is part of the down fall of this country. Yet Mr. I, one of the best teams sports owner, has decided to name it after a business he started and he, along with Ford, is from Detroit trying to make this city great again. And, the pizza, to me, is pretty damn good.
