Personally, I don't mind the AA-Glendening pairing as much as many people on the internet mind it.

As Blashill says, AA is a "self-generator," i.e. he can make things happen on his own. In that sense, he's like Larkin. On the one hand, the idea of having two Larkins on one line sounds great. On the other hand, maybe that's too many cooks in the kitchen. Maybe Larkin and AA (and Mantha?) are often looking to do the same thing and sort of stepping on each other's toes.

That being said, I think Bertuzzi-Larkin-Mantha works as well as it does largely because it's three different types of players playing three different roles. The players complement each other. When AA plays with Glendening, he has the green light to be THE driving force on his line. He's expected to make a lot of stuff happen "by himself," and I'd say that suits his game pretty well.

I do really like AA-Larkin-Mantha/Bertuzzi in man-advantage situations and when we're pressing for goals.

Totally with you here, I don't think he plays well with others in general. I'm not against him playing with Glendening for that very reason, but with that said I don't think Glendening is some positive force for offensive output either, i.e., I don't think he'll be any help to Zadina in getting his point producing confidence going (I don't think Zadina is about to self-generate the way AA does).

I think who AA plays with is largely irrelevant.

I mean, you're not wrong.

The elephant in the room is that our center depth kind of falls off a cliff once you get past Larkin @ 1C...

  • Nielsen's a 3C playing 2C
  • Glendening's a 4C playing 3C
  • AA's more effective on the wing than he is at center
  • Rasmussen isn't ready to be a full-time centerman
  • Helm doesn't play center anymore

Why is this?

Dude in theory shmeory. His faceoff% doesnt translate to his actual possession which is one of the league worst 40% ewwww

How much of that is a lack of shot attempts tho? (Assuming we're dealing in shot-based possession metrics here.)

Zadina firing shots from all over the o-zone might slightly improve that picture.

No longer can hold up to the added wear and tear

Yeah. I'd love for him to have more of a playmaking center to set him up well for those shots though

THIS IS TOMAS JURCO ALL OVER AGAIN

Totally fair. Can't say I strongly disagree.

Fortunately, all of this is probably moot, as we know there's gonna be line juggling and such.

That's probably part of it.

I'm guessing the big reason is that there really isn't much in his game that says he ought to be playing center. He's not an especially good playmaker, he's not especially good defensively, he's not especially good on faceoffs...

Agreed.

I kinda wish we could get Eric Staal on a short, low-risk deal. Staal becomes our (stopgap) 2C, Nielsen gets bumped down to 3C, Glendening gets bumped down to 4C. We'd still suck, but I bet we'd score more goals. Then, when Staal's contract is up, one of the young centers in our system should be ready to take over for him and own that 2C role.

Well I guess it's a good job the fate of the franchise is not in his hands alone.

It's also cool that you just described the worst-case scenario and even that is fine with me. Except for the part where you cry. This makes me sad. Poor CRL.

Veleno tied (with Lafreniere) for first in points in the Q now. 40 goals in 50 games, 96 points. Good stuff.

Hes lazy and he sucks. There's a reason he fell to 30. There's something wrong with him. IDK what, but there must be.

Notes: Wings will miss Nyquist but wish him well [DetroitRedWings.com]

Quote

Larkin centered Darren Helm and Anthony Mantha; Andreas Athanasiou centered Tyler Bertuzzi and Filip Zadina; Nielsen centered Luke Glendening and Michael Rasmussen; and Jacob de la Rose centered Abdelkader and Luke Witkowski.

Blashill said Athanasiou's move to center is for the remainder of the season.

"We've got 19 games left, about a quarter of the season," Blashill said. "It's a similar move I made with Larkin a couple years ago at the exact same time when a lot of people didn't think that Larkin was quite ready for the defensive responsibilities for it and in the end because of Larkin's approach, because of his drive, because of his ability to continue to improve, he's become a top-line center. I'm hoping putting Double-A in that spo,t it can ultimately produce for us a top-two-line center and ultimately we're a way better hockey team."

Blashill said Abdelkader would be back on the power play.

Blashill also said defenseman Madison Bowey, acquired in the Jensen trade with the Washington Capitals, would play against the Canadiens.

"I don't know what to say, he's (Nyquist) been traded and there's an open spot for a winger and I will try my best to fill the spot there and for the next season," Zadina said. "But I just want to play good hockey and be on the spot for the nine games or whatever.

Zadina is a font of unintentionally passive-aggressive statements.

From nhl.com/redwings Veleno entry

Quote

This season I have become more of a two-way leader. I like to speak up in the room since I'm a four-year veteran in the league and I've experienced a lot, whether it's internationally or in the league, winning a President's Cup and performing at the Memorial Cup. I try to do a bit of both. I'm more a leader on the ice, where I like to lead with my work ethic and little habits that I do. But off the ice as well. I try to lead as best as I can and talk to the younger guys, speak up when I feel like something's wrong.

In the room, I'm more of a guy that likes to be loose around games, not get too serious but kind of have a good mood and make everyone feel comfortable, especially as a leader. I want guys to be loose in the room and not be stressing. I want everyone to have fun and we'll crack little jokes here and there.

My season has been a good one, but it has had some challenges. For any top player in the league, you are going to be a target and this season, I have been targeted a lot. From getting maybe that extra slash or two in the corner after the play or getting into scrums, basically it's guys doing anything to try to throw you off your game and try to get you frustrated. I just try and keep my composure, not letting that get to me. I want to be a real good player, a good team player, I can't start taking penalties because guys are just doing their job trying to get me off my game. I realized how important composure is by seeing it at the pro level and seeing it at the international level, how discipline is a huge key factor in team success.

My relationship with the Red Wings is really good. Shawn Horcoff and Dan Cleary are still very much present helping me out. I think Shawn and Cleary have been really consistent with talking to me and watching some of my games when they can. They realize that I'm going to be entering into playoffs soon and they know what I have to do, how I have to step up my game in those important games and be a factor every night in the playoffs. We haven't really spoken about the playoffs yet, but I think it's a no-brainer when the playoffs come that you have to bring your game to another level. Obviously, we're going to go over that and speak about that when the time comes closer to the playoffs. I'm sure I will talk to them about if there's something in my game that's not there and that they would like to be there during the playoffs.

My focus on making the Red Wings is going to be after I'm done here in Drummondville. Right now, I'm focused on winning the Memorial Cup and winning the President's Cup and having a good run in the series. Once my season is over, I'll start thinking more about playing in Detroit next year.

As the playoffs approach, I want everyone to know I love playing hockey and I want to play. I think I would love to play all year. Hockey's a passion and I love going on the ice every day. I honestly wish that we had more games to play - we play enough games but I love hockey so much that I could never have that attitude of saying I want to get through these games.

In terms of goalies,

Larsson (20) is having a great first season in college
Van Pottelberghe (21) is having a great season in the Swiss league
Petruzzelli (20) seems to be at least finding his was in college and is having an improved season after falling on his face a bit in his first year
Eliasson (18) is still in Swedish juniors, but he is doing well there
Brattstrom (21) has split time between Division 1 and Division 2. In the former league he's struggled, but in the later he's been completely dominant.

Rybar is also playing very well for Grand Rapids this year

One of these mofos is gonna work out
