Hopefully zadina gets a look playing in the top 6 with worthy linemates

on another note ... chase Pearson got 2 assists for 27 pts in 29 games matching his career best in 8 fewer games and +16 compared to +1 last season

Based on this article today  https://www.mlive.com/redwings/2019/02/timing-right-for-red-wings-to-debut-filip-zadina-sunday.html the bolded above is probably a wet dream...

From the article

"Zadina will practice with the Red Wings on Saturday. Blashill didn’t indicate which line he will play on but said it’s not automatic that he’ll be in a top-six role.

“We’ve got some pretty good young players here; if I bring him in and put him ahead of some of those young guys, it’s not really right,” Blashill said. “They worked for a number of years and all the sudden some guy gets plopped ahead of you. They’ve had to earn it and Filip will have to earn it."

Oh definitely. There's no way you can demote a young guy like Vanek...

I don't care if Zadina gets "top six" necessarily, as long as he's not on a line with scrubs...

I'd be okay with...

Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha

Vanek - Nielsen - Nyquist

Athanasiou - Rasmussen - Zadina

Abdelkader - Glendening - Helm

Ya I’m not surprised with this stupid team , you don’t wanna just hand out minutes but I don’t see the point of bringing up what our easiest top prospect in god knows how Long? To play on a 3rd line with glendening and helm , like Jesus Christ give him athanasiou, put Rasmussen down the middle for a few games instead of parking him on a 4th as well

lets have some fun and let the kids play and if we lose even better so we get a top pick and not have to endure this disaster forever

Ha like that third line, same mindset ... keep him away from no talent 4th line guys

hopefully nyquist is dealt or benched by then , same with vanek

What does this mean??

Well I guess it's a good job the fate of the franchise is not in his hands alone.

It's also cool that you just described the worst-case scenario and even that is fine with me. Except for the part where you cry. This makes me sad. Poor CRL.

Rasmussen won't be sent to junior:

Wings keeping Rasmussen is 'best for his development' [Detroit Free Press]

Quote

The Detroit Red Wings had debated sending the rookie back to his junior team in order to make him eligible for the AHL playoffs, but decided he’s better off with them.

“It’s definitive on Rasmussen that he will be here for the rest of the season,” coach Jeff Blashill said.

Ditto.

AA has about zero points with Helm and Glendening and the line is consistently taking minuses.

Blashill: I'm liking what that line is doing.  Hard on the forecheck.

Notes: Zadina excited to make his NHL debut with Wings Sunday [DetroitRedWings.com]

tl;dr

  • Vanek-Glendening-Zadina
  • Vanek as mentor. Vanek is a similar player with similar draft pedigree and he speaks fluent Czech
  • Blashill wants Zadina to shoot. Vanek will get lots of pucks to him and he should be looking to shoot those pucks, not defer to someone else
  • Zadina will get PP time. Practiced with Bertuzzi, Nyquist, Rasmussen, Green, but Blashill seemed to suggest he'd be on the first unit (with Vanek)
  • PP cont'd: Blashill likes Zadina on the off-wing wall where he can rip one-timers

Pfft. What a waste. Zadina with Vanek? So dumb. What sense does it make to play the kid with someone who can speak his language, relate to him and  mentor him?

Blashill's reasoning:

  • Glendening is good defensively. In theory, that counterbalances the defensive shortcomings of Vanek and Zadina
  • Glendening is a tenacious forechecker, good at retrieving pucks. Vanek is old and slow and Zadina is going to be physically overmatched in most o-zone trench battles, so having a grinder on the line makes some sense
  • Glendening is our best faceoff guy. In theory, winning more faceoffs than not --> more time spent spent with the puck and less time spent trying to get the puck back

I'm good with this. Glendening's our 3C and Vanek gets a lot of ice time, so Zadina's starting on the third line, where he can get good minutes without having to go head-to-head with the other team's best players.

According to some guy on twitter, AA plays better with Glendening than anyone else. Maybe it's Blashill himself I'm arguing with.

Personally, I don't mind the AA-Glendening pairing as much as many people on the internet mind it.

As Blashill says, AA is a "self-generator," i.e. he can make things happen on his own. In that sense, he's like Larkin. On the one hand, the idea of having two Larkins on one line sounds great. On the other hand, maybe that's too many cooks in the kitchen. Maybe Larkin and AA (and Mantha?) are often looking to do the same thing and sort of stepping on each other's toes.

That being said, I think Bertuzzi-Larkin-Mantha works as well as it does largely because it's three different types of players playing three different roles. The players complement each other. When AA plays with Glendening, he has the green light to be THE driving force on his line. He's expected to make a lot of stuff happen "by himself," and I'd say that suits his game pretty well.

I do really like AA-Larkin-Mantha/Bertuzzi in man-advantage situations and when we're pressing for goals.

Dude in theory shmeory. His faceoff% doesnt translate to his actual possession which is one of the league worst 40% ewwww

Vanek - AA- Zadina

I mean, you're not wrong.

The elephant in the room is that our center depth kind of falls off a cliff once you get past Larkin @ 1C...

  • Nielsen's a 3C playing 2C
  • Glendening's a 4C playing 3C
  • AA's more effective on the wing than he is at center
  • Rasmussen isn't ready to be a full-time centerman
  • Helm doesn't play center anymore
