I've always wondered why they haven't retired Shawn Burr's #11. There has never been any debate about that, so clearly it deserves to be hung.

I feel like that design fits him. He is a goalie so he is automatically a little weird and he comes off kind of nerdy anyway. It is not that bad.

I don't mind it at all. I'm glad someone decided to change things up. Props to Howie. Maybe he's trying to reverse the sophomore slump by slapping superstition in the face.

Not bad. I think I like the "tachometer" mask better, but he certainly could have done worse. Anyone else notice the new RBK practice jerseys too? Slightly different design, and they now have grey as the accent color instead of red or white.

My point is that its beyond obvious what the Devils and Ilya are trying to do. It's been reported numerous times that Kovie wants to finish his career in the KHL and by *still* tailing off this contract to the extent that they do while trying to mask it with two more BS seasons is fairly easy to see through. The NHL would look like even bigger boneheads accepting this one than if they had just accepted the first given the stink that arose from it originally.

    It's Official: Turco to Hawks

    Yeah, that's called stupidity.

Bring him up as a black ace and let him skate once more with the Cup, even if he doesn't get his name on it again. Then let him and Drapes ride off into the sunset together, with the love and good wishes of many a Red Wings fan. If this comes true, I'm a happy camper.

i'm with you on this. i don't like losing guys like quincey and leino who didn't get any ice time to tap out their real potential. leino was a big player in philly's cup run and in a way it hurt. draper and maltby were done a couple years ago as far as effectiveness goes. if malts signs, he better be a mentor in GR all year. ice time shouldn't be given to him over guys like ritola, miller or even meech if there's injuries. and if there is injuries, i'd rather see tatar if a fwd is needed and smith if a dman is needed to see how they handle "the show" when called up. maltby should work with the likes of andersson as it seems that he will eventually have the same type of role as a grinder with the wings in years to come. after this season there will be a few spots to be taken by the young guys as well. possible retirees are modano, lids, draper, ozzy, maltby. that's atleast a roster spot at F, D and goal. lets hope mccollum doesn't play s***ty this year and howard and the wings brass can be comfortable with the howard/mccollum tandem. forward spot after this season sounds like tatar may be the guy as long as he continues to improve and that other D spot has smith's name all over it. so if someone else wants one of those spots, they better impress like crazy. all in all, maltby needs to stay in GR ALL year and help out the team that employed him way past when he was useful.

    It's Official: Turco to Hawks

Breaking the long drought? The Hawks did have some good runs at times. Unfortunately there was this team called the Edmonton Oilers that kind of ruined it for the good teams we had back in the 80s. And of course, running in to Mario Lemieuex in the 92 SCF was a bit rough. Not speaking towards you on this hillbilly. But I can not wait to see how all the spindoctors on this forum handle it when they find out the Hawks are actually going to be really good again this year. I imagine the spindoctors will laugh it off initially saying the Hawks are just hot. Come around Decemeber or January though, it will be impossible to deny the truth as Wing fans stare up to first place and see Chicago sitting there once again. The strength of the team (defense) is as good as last year, and very well could be better. Remember the Hawks have kept their best defensive forwards as well (Bolland, Toews & Hossa). The goaltending should be as good, if not better. No Huet for 40 games....and Turco's puckmoving style fits the fastest team in the NHL to a tee. Yeah, yeah. yeah...Turco has sucked against Detroit. I get that. I want to see that continue with him as a Hawk before I declare this as a big problem. The question is how guys like Stalberg, Skille, Makarov, Dowell, Vishnevskiy, Lalonde, Pisani...how those guys will replace the 3rd and 4th liners (plus Sopel on D) that the Hawks lost. Sopel is terrible at even strength and only was an asset when he blocked shots on the PK. I think they will be fine replacing him and probably will find an overall improvement there. I'm strangely confident that the voids will be filled. No the depth won't be the same. But at the same time, with so many of the Hawks good players being so young, it would be strange not to expect a little improvement out of Kane, Hjallmarsson, Bolland and Toews. Bolland might be the guy to jump out the most this year. He seemed poised to jump out last year, then missed half the season with his back injury. He never seemed to be back healthy until the playoffs started. And IMO he deserved the Conn Smythe as much as anyone.

    silly jersey retiring debate

Larry Aurie was 'un-retired' because he is not in the Hall of Fame - a good comparison for him would be a high-scoring Kris Draper. He once led the league in goals and also once led the league in playoff points. Great leader with a lot of intangibles and equally valuable with or without the puck. Red Kelly is a Hall of Famer and a vital cog in 4 Cups. If the Norris was around in his time, he would have 5 of them. His Hart record is better than any Red Wing not named Gordie Howe. The only 'debate' is that he went on to have some good years w/ Toronto (as a forward) after being traded from Detroit. The "debate" keeping these two from going up is flimsy, in my opinion.

    silly jersey retiring debate

those 2 are more deserving than alot of the names being thrown around. but the fact of the matter is 3/4 fans dont even know who they are. imo we should just leave numbers from that long ago alone. why would we ritire them now if they werent retired in all the years since their careers ended.

I don't know what this Hawkey-town that you speak of is...it has nothing to do with Chicago. But umm, thanks for playing.

Over the past few weeks i have read countless articles suggesting the wings should retire a few numbers. To me having your number retired by a franchise such as the detroit red wings should be reserved for the best of the best. How do you know for sure if a number should be retired? When there is no debate about it, if u need to debate about whether the player should have their number retired, then they shouldnt, the feeling should be unanimous. not to say the players being suggested arnt great players, but they arnt to be put in the same catagory as howe, yzerman, and the rest of the retired numbers. to me there is only one person at this point in time that deserves to have their number retired, Lidstrom. And he will have his number retired without a doubt, and no one is going to argue about whether he should have his number retired or not because everyone know he should and he is one of the all time red wing greats. IF THERE IS ANY DEBATE THEIR NUMBER SHOULDNT BE RETIRED THEN IT SHOULDNT, otherwise it makes it less special. PS if ur thinking about debating whether lidstrom should have his number retired....... just shut the f*** up
