Great. so he's outscored one D man just back from injury who's played one-third the number of games and one bottom pairing dman who's played half the games he has. Not very impressive. He's played 12 games, has 4 assists, and is a -6. His role on the team is pretty much to put up points, as he doesn't have a lot else to offer. No one needs to grab stats to force them into anything regarding Hudler. Any way you slice it, he has been craptacular so far this season. -

Flippula vs Hudler
Jenny and one other reacted to GoWings1905 for a post in a topic
That's just silly. Cleary plays because he works his ass off every shift and is the most versatile forward on the team. Not to mention, he has six times as many goals as Hudler, seven more points, is a respectable plus two after starting in a huge hole (Hudler is still a minus six) and he kills penalties. If Cleary is one of Babcock's favorites, it's because he earned it - something Hudler has yet to do even remotely this season. I'm not saying that Modano and Cleary don't share some fault for the third line not clicking, but they seem to be doing rather well now with Abdelkader or Bertuzzi as the third member. Hudler looked better against the Oilers, but Babcock is exactly right in that he needs to bring that effort far more consistently than he has to this point. I like Hudler, am geninuely glad he came back and feel he will be a valuable asset to the Red Wings as the season progesses. I couldn't care less about the Filppula vs. Hudler debate because they are both Red Wings and I don't give a crap about one side of the respective player's fans being able to say they were right all along. We should all want both of them to succeed. -

I like your thinking, but there are a couple significant mistakes in your analysis. Yes, this is true. Coefficient of static friction for ice is certainly low, but definitely quantifiable http://iopscience.iop.org/0031-9120/43/4/006;jsessionid=3A5F1E9812E840606F7F43C5E35A3EAC.c2. If it were truly zero, then any amount of horizontal force applied to the net would set it in motion. This is incorrect. Draw a free body diagram of the net. Downward gravitational force by itself will do nothing to resist horizontal motion of the net. It is only the force of friction that will resist the motion. We can assume a static coefficient of friction somewhere around 0.05 based on the article abstract I linked. I corrected the above calculations accordingly. Yes, I'm with you. No. Neglecting air resistance, no work is done while the puck is flying through the air. Work is done on the net only while the puck is making contact with it. So most of the kinetic energy is transferred to the net over a distance of a foot or so (however much the net stretches). . Corrected this calculation as well. The force exerted on the net is roughly 140 lbf, which seems pretty reasonable to me for a shot of that velocity. I think it's perfectly reasonable that the net could move. However, it should be kept in mind that the assumptions for coefficient of friction and the distance over which the puck energy is transferred to the net are just ballpark estimates, and even slight changes to the values can drastically change the results. The other huge simplification of the problem is the transfer of puck energy to the net. In reality, it will not be linear. The force exerted will start very small as the puck first makes contact with the net. As the net stretches, tension in the strings will start to pull harder on the metal frame. The force exerted by the puck is growing, but at the same time its kinetic energy is decreasing since it is being slowed down. It is likely at a given point in time, the instantaneous force might be even higher than 140 lbf, but for most of the time the puck is in contact, the force would be significantly lower. -

Did someone say physics!? - A hockey puck weighs 6 oz = 0.17 kg - A hockey goal weighs 125 pounds = 56.69 kg (http://www.arizonasportsequipment.com/hockey/complete-hockey-goals/regulation-goals-72-x-48/sku/238opw/) A little background on what I'm about to do for those who are interested: In order for the net to move, a shot (force) hitting the net's center of mass would have to overcome the initial static friction (which we can assume there is none due to the ice's slipperiness). Essentially all there is then is to say that a horizontal force must exceed the downward force due to the mass of the net and gravity, in order for the net to move at all. Force = mass*acceleration (in this case acceleration is gravity) Fnet = (56.69kg)*(9.81m/s2) = 556.13 Newtons Thus, the force of the puck needs to exceed 556.13 Newtons to be able to move the net. The hardest shot recorded is 105.4 mph = 47.12 m/s The kinetic energy of a shot with this speed is KE = (1/2)*m*v2 = (1/2)*(0.17kg)*(47.12m/s)2 = 188.72 Newtons*m. This amount is only equal to the Work, however. In order to equate it to the Force applied, you must divide this number by the distance, which can be said from the top of the circle, is about 35 feet = 10.67 m. So (188.72 N*m)/(10.67 m) = 17.69 Newtons, roughly 3% of the necessary energy required to cause the net to move. Working backwards using the necessary force to move the net, the necessary Kinetic Energy is KE = (556.13 N)*(10.67 m) = 5933.9 Nm. Put that into the Kinetic energy equation and solve for velocity: v2 = (5933.9 Nm)/(1/2)/(0.17 kg) = 69810.67 m2/s2. Take the square root to get velocity: v = 264.2 m/s, which is 590.99 miles per hour. To get an idea of how fast that is, the speed of sound is 340.29 m/s, which is 768 miles per hour. But of course it's fake. You can tell by how the net moves before the puck even hits the net on the last two shots. Douchiness and the Pittsburgh Penguins are completely uncorrelated. Douchiness and Sidney Crosby being a whiny ***** is completely correlated. -

1 pointYawn. What makes a scoring forward a scoring forward? Scoring. When is a scoring forward not a scoring forward? When he's not scoring. When he's neck and neck in points with the 3rd pairing Dmen.

I disagree. I don't think Hudler's primary problem is confidence, it's conditioning and work ethics. He's been slow and lazy since he came back. This isn't the KHL, he needs to work hard every shift. -

I don't get it. Filppula is on pace for more points, he's faster, more defensively responsible, he takes faceoffs, he kills penalties, he can play on the power play, he's VERSATILE (ie. he can play with more than one set of linemates and his performance doesn't necessarily suffer. Unlike Hudler, who as eva can attest, plays poorly when he doesn't have good linemates). I simply can't see how you would ever pick Hudler over Filppula. -
1 pointHe looked great tonight. My 1st live game of the season. Practicing his stick handling during pre game warm up: Was hoping he would have put it away on the break-a-way (be aware I tried video'ing while watching, which = shaky camera work);

He better ******* make it. He's the second best goalie of his generation, and the guy ahead of him is argued for the top spot all-time. Even if you add on the previous ten years, you only get two more guys better than Osgood, both of whom again are argued for that top spot. -

Ozzie get's his 400 win and retires after this year, question, is he going to the Hall of Fame? With 3 Cup rings and 400 wins, I say yes. The thing that bothers me most about losing to the Pens in 2009 is that Ozzie was robbed of a Conn Smythe. -
