In an abrupt 1st round exit that includes only one victory, a series where nobody on the team really shined, it's ultimately the best thing to happen to the Wings this season on many different levels, (short of winning another Stanley Cup of course). Limping along into a conference final loss, for example, (or even another 2nd round loss), would have provided too much cover for our weaknesses. It would have made it too easy to gloss things over and many real issues would only be considerred suspect issues that we could possibly live with. However, this 1st round exit is a complete failure by Detroit Red Wing standards, and now everything is exposed and on the table for scrutiny. Everything from when to chip and chase ( and work on that more often) to who we really need on Pavel's wing, to Filppula, Franzen, on down the line, to reassessing our tendency to keeping the youngsters (Smith this year) off the playof roster when they are the one's with the energy, blah blah blah. Our roster, our philosophy, our staff... Everything is now on the table to be scrutinized. Also, I think it would leave a bad taste for Lidstrom in regards to retirement timing. Again, if we had made it to th conference finals, maybe Nick would have thought that is as good as thing can get, he's had a full career, blah blah blah, and it's time to retire. This year's exit may light a fire in him to return for one final season. At the same time, Smith can be on the roster to learn from Nick, which did not really happen last year. One more run for the Cup in 2013 for Nick Lidstrom. This team has more to gain and learn from an embarrassing 1st round exit and it's resulting harsher off season scrutiny than they do from the experience of cruising along into a conference final loss. What do you think?

Death of the integrity of the NHL.

I've grown up with this game, I love it. But I've never in my life thought the NHL was so utterly pathetic, cheap, and blatently crooked and biased in my lifetime. After seeing that Torres got 25 games for that hit, I've seen enough. I understand the game of hockey and have watched and played long enough to know that hit differed from a Kronwall hit by about an extra second. Seriously, watch it again. I have no idea what all this fuss is about. Once again though, its a bottom 6 guy, so the NHL can make a statement. They can make up for not suspending clear intent to injure the head, from behind, of another on a non-hockey play by giving out an assininely overboard suspension to a bottom six guy on what essentially was a late hit. A late hit to the front of a player (head up Hossa!). The clear bias towards star players is sickening. Some of Kronwall's hits have been similar to that hit and nothing happens. The funny part is we knew already that Weber would get a slap on the wrist and it happened just like we said. "Well that's just the way it is" is not good enough, this is embarrassing for hockey. The NHL's attempt at any serious regard for players health and safety is marred by the fact that when the rubber meets the road and they have to make a tough decision, they drop the ball. Any rule they make has some kind of loophole for star players and then they act like they can throw the book at Brendan Smith, Raffi Torres, etc. E Now i start to watch closely at what happens when its a player from a team that Bettman really needs to succeed, in his small market experiments (Nashville). The fact that the NHL owns the Pheonix Coyotes is one of the biggest conflicts of interest I've ever seen and should call into question almost everything that happens in a playoffs series with them involved. Bettman has went to near every length he can to keep them there (while letting ATL go without so much as a breath of remorse) and I would not be surprised in the slightest to learn of any involvement between him and anyone that has any way to even quietly influence a series in their favor. There's hundreds of millions of dollars at stake and we all know Bettman is all about money. I'm happy for the Coyotes and I haven't got to watch any of that series but I legitimately wonder if its being called toward Pheonix's favor. I was glad to see the Penguins getting stomped but I started wondering if the officiating was goingto turn toward Pittsburgh because I know that series is getting a ton of tv viewers and makeing the league a ton of money. Call it conspiracy but in the last four years the NHL has shown its true colors and bias and it seems to follow the money to me. Our series with the Pens, the first SJ series in the 2nd round (the most epically crooked thing I've ever watched in hockey), and now the clear confusion/bias in dealing with suspensions has shown how much of a crooked league we have. I miss the old NHL. I know this is all over the place right now, maybe ill finish and expound on my thoughts when I can (at work now).

50% Holland for bring back most of this trash, year after year, and not trying to upgrade the team, which may help in the long run getting Lids back. Because he can make many improvements saying, look this is our plan for you to go out on top. If they brought in one more hardcore vet like Iggy, Doan, Morrow, there would be even more motivation to win 1 last cup for Lids and a first cup for them. 30% Babcock, for refusing to make players be held responsible for there s***ty play and his refusal to make changes whether regular season or playoffs. Hudler at the point on the PP, ya that was a good idea.... Lets try it a good 15-20x before we finally ******* realize that. Also letting f***s like Franzen and them play most of the series on the top line when that useless ***** refuses to cut to the center of the ice, or bitching about lack of physicality yet letting them all play with out it is his own damn fault. His late line combos, bert/dats/mule line didn't do s***, Nyquist/Homer/Emmerton line... WTF? But game 5 last 15min yeah lets finally put lines that looked good at certain points in the season or series back together, because what we did for majority of the time was oh so successful. 20% players, f*** most of you, excluding: Dats/Lids/Z/Nyquist/Helm Because teams are allowed to make moves before the season starts and even up to the point of the trade deadline

Holland completely. Theres more to it than this but ill keep it simple: Before the deadline we were 3-1 against Nashville with 2 of those wins being 1 sided 4-1 drubbings. After the deadline we were 1-6 against Nashville. Our bottom 6 lacked the size/speed/grit to actually wear down the other teams defense and our top 6 really could have used another weapon to give Dats/Zett some support. They both had the puck on their sticks allot and tried to make plays but nobody could provide and option. Paul Gaustad IMO could have done wonders for this team instead of Kyle "footsteps" Quincey whodouble clutches the puck everytime he thinks a hits coming. CBA runs until September right? So that means the cap is projected to reach 69-72 million. He better get his hat in the ring with some of the other top bidders for a few keys peices - our core can still win, but they need some support. This leagues getting fuller and fuller of NHL ready young talent every year and Holland needs to realize that.

The whole team. You win as a team, you lose as a team.

    25 Games for Torres

When I first saw the 25-game suspension, I thought it might be a bit heavy-handed, but after watching the explanation video that showed how many times Torres has done this exact same thing over his career, I think it was definitely warranted.

Holland could solve some issues last offseason.Scoring winger by signing Ryder, physical bottom liner/fighter/face off specialist with Konopka ,but can't also deny Ian White was a very good signing Can't blame him for not be more active at the deadline, cause the price for every single player was a way too high. People were upset with his trade for Quincey,so probable would act the same if he shopped for Gaustad

More than two people were responsible for our season ending short. Babs didn't utilize what little he had to his best advantage, Holland hasn't done much to improve the team the last few seasons, and the players themselves woefully underperformed, save a couple people.

I love to see Philly win because I can't stand the s***birds, but I'm not cheering for them so much as I'm rooting against Pittsburgh. So hockey is essentially over for me. I have one team, and they're not in it anymore. Besides, IT'S BASEBALL SEASON!

I believe this all goes back to Rafalski's decision to retire. I believe it caught Red Wings management off guard, and when they stood back and looked at their situation (including guessing how many more years Lidstrom would play) and looked at the FA market last Summer, they decided to sit on their hands and bring in the kids to see what they could do. They also figured that if things were not working they had a pot of gold to throw at someone at the trade deadline. So they make some small changes (White, Commadore) and bring in the kids. Babcock himself said in his interview a few weeks ago that he told management he was not sure they would make the playoffs. Sitting on a backlog of prospects in Grand Rapids means at some point in time you have to use them. And guess what. The team plays fairly well, Jimmy is having a great season and the off-season gamble they took appears to be paying off. Then, a few injuries pop up (Howard, Eaves, Datsuyk, Lidstrom) and suddenly the mask is pulled off and the remaining team is exposed for what it is. The trade deadline comes around and while management is interested in a few potential targets the asking price is too high given management's sight is now firmly focused on the upcoming Summer FA market. Management brings in Quincey for some additional blue line help/upgrade to Kindl and decides to rely on the return of injured players to make a playoff run. In management's eyes, if the healthy team can play in April/May like it did in December/January then all will be well. However the chemistry never did return with the injured players, and the loss of Helm was the dagger in the heart. The playoffs exposed the Red Wings for not having a solid 4th line, i.e. the Grind Line. That should be one of their top priorities in the off season; reconstruct a new Grind Line, either with in-house players or bring in some new guys. The playoffs also exposed the Red Wings for not having a "sniper" forward and a true "power" forward.

Yup, we could have lost against Phoenix instead. I agree you shouldn't have taken crap for it, but unless the Blackhawks just tore through Phoenix, your point isn't valid.

Babs calls out Kenny, sort of!

I knew there was trouble as soon as I read a Freep article about how the Wings needed Filppula to become sniper and save the day. When your hopes rest on Flip, you're in trouble. I think the experiment involving hoping players play above their normal skill levels is over. A team full of role players, most very good in their own right, just doesn't do anything if they can't score consistently. I fully expect a strong faceoff specialist and a top line scorer to join the team in the summer. There are a lot of possible scenarios, but we could end up seeing something like this: Parise-Datsyuk-Zetterberg Franzen-Faceoff Specialist-Bertuzzi Nyquist-Filppula-Eaves Miller-Helm-Abdelkader I doubt Flip would be on the 3rd line, but that could potentially be a Cup winning forward corps right there.

Thank you Lids. If this is your last game in a Wings jersey, thank you for making literally 2/3rds of my life enjoyable from October to May almost every single year. An epitome of physical and mental clarity and consistency. If you do go, you will be greatly missed on the ice and in the locker room. Godspeed.
