Here's another way to view these stats. Hockey fans know espn won't cover it, so they don't watch it. -

It's time - to predict 2014 Team USA
RedWingsin2011 reacted to TheDetroitRedWings for a post in a topic
I would say Quick, Anderson, Howard, Miller, Schneider, Kane, Kessel, Parise, Ryan, Byfuglien, Suter, Yandle (and possibly Kesler with his 2-way skills) would all have a very good chance of cracking Canada's lineup. Although the great thing about the direction USA hockey is going, in another 4 years that number should grow big time. So much young American talent coming up the ranks. Hopefully most of them will develop accordingly. -

Rule 48: not working as planned.

Agreed. When guys get hit clean, whether it's Crosby or anyone else, then there's no suspension on the play. Which is the point I was trying to make. Lots of people around LGW seem to believe that there's some sort of bias in favor of marquee players, and there isn't. Everybody is just as susceptible to suspension as everyone else, as the 2013 suspensions to Duncan Keith, Corey Perry, Joffrey Lupul, Taylor Hall, and Alex Edler seem to indicate. I'm tired of this old "well if it happened to 'so and so' then there would/wouldn't be a suspension" bulls***. It's simply not true. Star players get suspended all the time, ask Ovechkin. Furthermore, just because you hit a star player hard doesn't mean you'll be suspended, ask Steckel and Hedman. It's just a line of b.s. that dummies keep repeating to make themselves feel relevant. -

ESPN is only going to cover sports that are going to bring in viewers. Football is the most widely watched sport in America. Baseball is immensely popular. Basketball goes up and down with popularity, but it still maintains an edge over hockey. But to really understand why ESPN doesn't give as much coverage to the NHL, you also should consider why Hockey isn't as popular a sport as Football, Baseball or Basketball. IMO, its because they are all fairly easy (and inexpensive) to play, while Hockey is so much more difficult (and expensive) to play. Think of kids playing a sport on a playground or in a park. To play Football, all they really need is the ball itself, which start at maybe $10. To play catch (precursor to baseball), a ball and a glove will run you $20 on the very cheap end, $50 or so to start getting into the better quality equipment. Basketball only needs the ball, again $10 or so, and a hoop, which are available at almost any playground in the country. Hockey, however, needs so much more. Stick, puck, skates (unless it's on-foot), goal frame, etc, which all cost significantly more than just the one or two things needed for the other sports. Not to mention EVERYONE playing hockey needs at least a stick and skates, whereas only one kid needs to bring a football or basketball so that everyone can play. So, in a way, you already answered your question with your post here... Because it's so hard and so expensive to play, fewer people play the sport. Which means fewer people are interested in it. Which means ESPN isn't going to devote much time to it, because Hockey coverage won't bring in as many pairs of eyes as Football, Baseball or Basketball. On a side note, I'd be willing to bet that John Buccigross and Linda Cohn account for 90% of the 2.7% coverage. They seem to be the only real NHL fans at the SportsCenter anchor desk. -

1 pointKeyboard warriors who question the work ethic, professionalism and attitude of sportsmen who have spent over 20 years at the absolute pinnacle of their profession need to take a serious reality check. Even someone like Ovechkin may be a glory hunting egotist, but he is also one of the best players in the world at one of the most demanding sports imaginable. And Jagr has been at that level or similar for two decades. There is not one person on this forum who can claim to be one of the top 10 in the world at something millions of people try to do for a job. And I seriously doubt any one on here has the day to day commitment, work-ethic, courage and drive of a hall of fame ice-hockey player. So Jagr's not loyal to any particular team. Perhaps if he's started at the wings he would be, but most teams treat their players like mere assets to be bought, sold and traded. And at 41 he is still good enough to be a top 6 forward on a decent side in the highest level at his chosen sport. Or top put it another way, he is probably still among the top 300 in the world at what he does, despite being a decade past his peak.....

"Lay down the boogie and play that funky music 'til you die" Oh, that was good for a laugh. But you notice he's not self-conscious at all...just as unfazed as you please. I wouldn't be caught dead doing something like that, and yet he's so nonchalant about it. One of the reasons why you can't help but love him. -
